Rating: Summary: READ IT!!! Review: This book is GREAT!!! Matt lives alone in the woods in the 1600's. His father is off to get his mother and sister, who live far away. Matt has to survive alone in the woods until his father comes back. The excitment never stopped. I definately reccomend this book to you.
Rating: Summary: You must read this book Review: Matt, a 13-year-old boy who lives in colonial times goes with his father from their home in Qunicy into the wilderness of Maine to claim land and build a cabin. His father then leaves him there, and returns to Quincy to fetch his wife and daughter. While Matt is alone, he has numerous adventures, which include meeting an Indian boy, and having an unfortunate encounter with a bear. A vivid book; it will make you feel like you are there. You will feel like you can make the choices Matt must make. When Matt did something, I could see it in my mind. When he made important choices, it made me think about what I would do. It will really make you feel like you are there
Rating: Summary: White Boy and Indian?... Review: I am a fifth grader and my class has just finished reading The Sign of the Beaver, by Elizabeth George Speare, and I thought that it was an excellent boook. My favorite chapter was chapter 15,when Matt and Attean come accross the bear cub and "Mama" bear.I liked this chapter because it was action-packed and adventurous, and a little bit disgusting. My class and I think that Mrs. Speare should write a sequel to the book. Some suggestions for the title are Return of the Beaver, Sign of the Wolf (or other animal). Turtleback Elem. San Diego, Ca
Rating: Summary: You must read this book it is great! Review: I am reading a book called "The Sign Of The Beaver. I think it is a great book because of all the excitement it brings to me!!!! This book will take you on adventures that you won`t forget. It will leave you hanging at the end of the chapter so you want to read on. It is a fast book to read but you want to keep reading about Matt`s (the main character in the story) adventures and his troubles with Attean!! I love this suspensful book and would like to recommend it to you. I thought it was boring at first but when Matt came upon the BEES it became more and more exiting when the INDIAN saved his life. (Matt was scared at first but then realized that Indians aren`t bad at all). Matt ended up teaching Attean (the Indian boy) to read and they became very close friends, in fact, almost brothers. Well I don't want to spoil the rest of the story so if this book sounds interesting TO YOU you can go buy this book at any store and I hope you have reading this adventures, exiting and funny book!!!!
Rating: Summary: An exceptional survival story!! Review: This is a wonderful book in which a young boy learns how to live alone in the woods with the help of an Indian boy. It is a story of friendship- which develops between the boys as they spend time together and learn to appreciate their differences. I enjoyed this book just as much now (as a college student) as I did in 6th grade when I read it for the first time. As a future teacher- "The Sign of the Beaver" will definitely be included in my classroom library as a book for children to enjoy and also to be used as an introduction to the study of American Indians and life in the 1700's. I would recommend this book to anyone!!
Rating: Summary: I enjoyed this book and recommend it to the young adult. Review: I enjoyed this book, but would have enjoyed it more if it were more descriptive of the setting.
Rating: Summary: a real eye-opener to the early settlers Review: This is such a great book!! Imagine the difference in the life of a 12 year old boy now and then. Young Matt struggles to survive in the wilderness of Maine and proves himself worthy of the Indians' respect along the way. Very adventurous!
Rating: Summary: A good book Review: The Sign of the Beaver is very informative on how earlier Indians in Maine lived. Elizabeth George Speare did a great job on describing details. You can almost see the images she is talking about.
Rating: Summary: This novel is a good springboard to Native American studies Review: This is the third year that I have used The Sign of the Beaver with my fifth graders. I find it to be a gentle springboard to a more in-depth study of Native American issues. Though the Native American characters are drawn rather sketchily, my students are awakened to the deeper issues surrounding their confrontation with white settlers through the eyes of young Matthew Hallowell, the main character.
