Rating: Summary: Offensive steroetypes Review: In doing research on the book, I came across several Native American organizations that find the content offensive. Looking at the book from their perspective, it was easy to see their point. This could be a useful piece of literature to open a discussion about bias and stereotypes. I suggest it be avoided as historical literature to teach young children about Native Americans. There are a growing number of other options available.
Rating: Summary: The Sign of the Beaver Review: It was the best. My teacher and my class read it. It was great.
Rating: Summary: Despicable Disaster By: J.S. Grade 5 Review: This atrocious monstrousity of a book was horrible. "The Sign of the Beaver" disgraced books of all kind. For Social Studies I had to read an historic novel. By ill fate I came across this book. Don't pick up this book if you're not a nature freak. The author droned on and on into complete boredom. It's one positive point was excellent use of vocabulary.

Rating: Summary: Home alone with Indians! Review: The most part of this book that I like is Atteans ways to kill animals.
Rating: Summary: home alone with Attean Review: I liked Sign Of The Beaver becouse all the hunting and the stuff that Attean taught them. And whenever Matt taught Attean how to read, that was cool - the way he did that. It had a happy ending.
Rating: Summary: Sign of the Beaver Review: This is by far one of the worst books I have ever read. one star is the lowest I could go but I would give it negative ten. I was forced to read this atrocious book in the 4th grade, 4 years later I am still repulsed. Who really wants to read about a boy and a indian tribe. ...
Rating: Summary: The Sign of the Beaver a great book for everyone Review: The Sign of the Beaver depicts the experiences of 13 year old Matt. Matt is a native of Massechusetts now commissioned to protect and preserve their families new land in Maine while his father returns to bring the rest of his family to the new land. Through a series of events, Matt receives unexpected friendship from a neighboring Penobscot tribe and a young boy named Attean. He learns how to adjust to his new home and survive even the toughest of situations. This is a well-written book that is exploding with adventure and emotion. It is book that many children today can relate to as many of them are faced with the responsiblities of an adult at very young ages. The Sign of the Beaver also reveals how first impressions can be reevaluated and friendships can be formed amidst the greatest adversity. I believe this book would be great for any reader, but especially the middle school reader.
Rating: Summary: Great book! Review: I bought this book to use as part of our home school curriculum, for my son this year. I had to read the book in order to teach it. I was very impressed with the story and I felt it taught many important life lessons. It was a very touching story and I found myself unable to put it down. It's not just a kid book, but a heartwarming story for the whole family. I can't wait for schooling to start on Tuesday. I know my son is going to love this book as much as I did. I am also using the teaching guide for this book, by Teacher Created Materials. I highly recommend using them together if your going to teach the book as part of any curriculum.
