Rating: Summary: A fight of human strength and fear. Review: "The girl in the box" is a book about courage and humanity. Jackie McGee is captured and left in a underground celler by a unknown man. She has no idea why... He never shows up again. She is left allown in the dark, with only her typewritter and a backpack full of writing paper. Trying to foces her mind and not thinking about what will happen next Jacklyn types letters to her parents, friends, English teacherand local police. She even writes a story for her English class. SHE IS MISERBLE AND SCARED. She fells weak and tired. This bookj is a reflection of human life. It's about what could be changed in the past and future if there ever was a chance. Perhaps there will be... This book doesn't have an ending. One moment Jackies letters just stop, there is no more. This is the first book that realy scared me. Jackie didn't know what was coming, what would tommorow bring. Sitting in the dark and silence, waiting for help, Jackie is a symbol of human fears. In a way it's alike to "A diary of a young girl" by Anne Frank. Both girls never lost faith, had dreams and a lot of courage. You will wont to read this book more then once.
Rating: Summary: not just a survival story Review: Although this is for a younger set, every time I pick up this book, I find yet another meaning. The first time you read it, the question is, "Will she make it?" The second time you read it, the question is "What is she feeling?" The third time you read it, there are no questions for her, but for yourself. If I was "in the box" to whom would I want to send final messages? A thouroughly engrossing book
Rating: Summary: soul searching. Review: Finding it hard to put the book down it is quite the page turner, although it is slow paced. No genre fits this book, in fact; it's in it's own genre. I wanted an ending because the book built my mind up to so many different cinclusions and it ust left me there with no closure. But when you are soul searching there is no end so the book fits the concept and the way it involves around so many personal issues in life its a wonderful journey.
Rating: Summary: scary Review: i cant believe that none of the other reviews mentioned how scary this book is. as far as i understand it, its also aimed at teens -- this is way too disturbing. yes, the ending doesnt explain anything, but i saw that not as a detriment but more along the lines that this book is just SCARY. i read it when i was a young man, and i dont remember it all that well specifically, but i remember enough to know that i would not read it again. reminded me of 'johnny got his gun' as far as being short and leaving the reader feeling pretty terrible.
Rating: Summary: Life-Changing Review: I first read this book when I was 12 (I'm 16 now), and it touched me in a way no other story has. It has inspired me to write, and I have now published 6 short stories. I will never forget the story of Jackie; her courage, her tragedy and her love for the people in her life. It is truly an amazing piece of writing. You should be proud, Ouida Sebestyen! Thank-you Quin Starstate
Rating: Summary: A haunting story that you will never forget... Review: I first read this book when I was 13, and now, almost 20, it is one of the few stories that I still think about. I finally ordered it, and after reading it again, I am still amazed. I admit, reading it for the second time and knowing the ending did take some of the suspense out of it, but not in a bad way. I think the fact that this story has stayed with me for so many years speaks volumes alone. I have never and will never forget Jackie McGee. I am constantly running ideas through my head of what happened after the book ended. This book gets inside your head and stays there. It does things to your mind. This is probably the best young adult book ever written. It is no doubt the best I have ever read.
Rating: Summary: not pleased Review: I found this book at the library and thought it sounded pretty cool. But when I began reading this book I found that it seemed to drag on forever and never really revealed much of the plot until near the end of the book.If you could call it the end.I wasnt pleased with this book but I didnt want to stop reading it because I was hoping it would get better. It didnt.About half way through the book you can guess how it ends.I was pretty disapointed and now I'm not sure if I want to read any other books by this author. If I do I hope that they are better than this one.I gave this book two stars because i does have a genral story-line thats pretty decent, but other than that it dosn't rate very high on my "like" list of books. If you like odd books that leave you hanging and not knowing what happens, you may like this book. But I dont recomend you buy it.just my opinion.
Rating: Summary: A great book to read! Review: I loved this book and would recremend it to anyone. The struggle that Jackie went through was amazing. It is hard to believe anyone could go through that kind of torture. I liked the ending because I could decide in my mind whether or not Jackie dies in that hell hole or if she somehow survives. I liked how she has the type writer and the way she writes letters to her family and April. I think when Jackie was writing the story, it was a way to finally come to grips with what happened to her. Again everybody read this book because it is simply the best page turner you can pick up!

Rating: Summary: Ouida Sebestyen knows how to write Review: I read The Girl in the Box once in my life, and that was about 6 years ago, when I was 11. Ever since then I have searched for it off and on. I was beginning to doubt the book ever existed, but it left such an outstanding impression in my mind that I have always wanted to re-read it. The plot of Jackie McGee being mysteriously kidnapped and locked pointlessly in an underground cellar is a freaky vision. But what made the books message really strong was the descriptive way Sebestyen explained her ordeal, even when the girl's situation was grim. It was a mental blowout, how moving the book was, and the ending just drops off, leaving nothing known. In some ways I like that, some ways I don't. But I think the neutral ending is one of the main reasons I am so anxious to re-read it, to see if I can find a hidden ending somewhere this time around. The book is wonderfully written and mentally explorative, great for most ages. Read it, you won't be disappointed!
