Rating: Summary: Dragonwings Review: Dragonwings By Laurence Yep Moon Shadow is eight years old when he sails from the Tang people's village in China, to America. Seeking his Father, someone who he has never met before. Un-expectantly, he finds his father among a group of Tang people at the shores of Angel Island. His father, Windrider, earns a living doing laundry for wealthy people in large estates all over San Francisco, California. Dragonwings was nominated for a Newbery award, but didn't win it. In 1903, the immigrants came to the U.S. seeking better jobs with better pay. But the way Laurence Yep explained it from Moon Shadow's eyes; the Americans were 'demons' and 'demonesses.' Which was only true to them because they came at a bad time, when these Americans were not used to all these religions and cultures coming all at once. So they were prejudice with each other, as well as scared. The only nice 'demons' that they ever met were Mrs. Whitlaw and her niece. It's really a book with just about everything in it, so you really must read Dragonwings.
Rating: Summary: Want a good Reading???? Review: I just read this book. Its mostly about the hardships Moon Shadow and his father Windrider had to face in golden Mountain ( california). I Believe it was very descriptive and yet had very simple themes. The themes in the story were mostly about friendship, your dreams, family and prejudice. I think this is a great book. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. ^_^
Rating: Summary: Dragonwings Review: this book is about immigrants from China who come to America to work. It is about thre hardships and triumphs in this new land. Windrider and his son Moon shadow work ni a company, but after a certain incident they have to live in an apartment owned by a demon, which is what they call Americans. After an earthquake in san francisco they have to live in an apartment that is in very bad condition. Windrider dreams of flying a plane and in the end his dream comes true. i thought this was a decent book. it was easy for me to read, but it wasn't very suspenseful. I do think the book had good details, they were usually very specific.
Rating: Summary: wholesome literature Review: This is just a quick note to say that the objective of this book is great! But the means in which it is demonstrated is not. The writing is gearing toward young readers and there is profane language included in details of this book. I find that the profance language in this book is unnecessary to get the message across in this book.
Rating: Summary: READ ALL ABOUT DRAGONWINGS Review: I am writing and expressing my feelings about what I thought about the story Dragonwings. Dragonwings to me was very exciting towards the middle and end, only because that was when all the action started to begin. To me, in the begining, it was boring because it just talked about Moonshadow, the main character. He moved to live with his father in Gold Mountain, San Francisco. When Moonshadow had moved to San Francisco that was when all the action started having to deal with him and his father working with the Company it was really like a family company tradition. When I first look at this book I was thinking that it was just a waste of my time I don't need to read this, but as I read it I got more and more into it. My favorite character was Moonshadow because he stood up for himself instead of letting some drug-addict let him talk to him about doing the bad things instead of the good things. I think that who ever read this enjoy this and have as much fun I had reading it. I kind of started off with a bad impression of this book, but I really enjoyed it. *PEACE* From someone special..........
Rating: Summary: An excellent review Review: I have many different evaluations on the book Dragonwings. One evaluation I have on Dragonwings is very specific. I think the book is very boring. Why is because it has no descriptive details that adds excitement to the story. Also, another reason is because the chapters are extremley long. To be honest the only thing I enjoy through out the book is the charecters personality. Why is because they all teach me something diffrent about myself. For example, fathers personality shows me that if you focus on one goal you can achieve it. Also Moonshadow's enthusiasm shows me that even though a person hasn't been there you can still show them comfort. One more charecter I can connect to is Blackdog. Why is because he shows a shy part of me.That expresses herself through action. Otherwise I wouldn't recommend this book.I do give reguards to the author because there were some good parts in the story. For instance, during the earthquake some enteresting events occured. That gave you a better veiw of the charecters real personality. This is my own expressful opinion on the book Dragonwings.
Rating: Summary: Follow Your Dreams Review: What color is a "power" color? What color is associated with calm and serenity? What color signifies purity? Most of would agree that color is often significant. Does anyone know the meaning behind this popular symbol? The early Chinese worshipped nature. Besides watching the changing seasons and thanking the gods for good crops, they feared the violent turns nature could take. To explain why the universe operated in such unpredictable ways, philosophers said everything was made up of two opposing forces. Pictured as a circle with two curved and equal parts, the Yang section is red and is the warm, sunny, positive, and masculine side while the Yin side is black and is described as feminine, mysterious, dark, and negative. When one is stronger than the other, the balance is changed, and that's how ancients explained how the universe works. In Laurence Yep's Dragonwings, readers watch eight-year old Moonshadow leave China destined for the Golden Mountain (otherwise known as California). As he grows up with WIndrider, a father he has never know, we sympathize with his struggles in a new culture and his homesickness for his mother and grandmother who signify his old way of life. Beaten and ridiculed, Moonshadow receives a rude awakening in what Blackdog refers to as the "land of the demons". Instead of wealth and a life of ease, he is confronted with relatives who earn a living doing laundry. Based on actual historical facts, we learn some things about the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, the California Gold Rush, the Oriental Exclusion Acts, and the Boxer Rebellion from a unique perspective. Despite the rejection, poverty, loneliness, pain, and fear Moonshadow endures, he remains loyal to his father, and together they pursue Windrider's dream. To find out if their courage and persistence pays off, you must read this fantastic adventure.
Rating: Summary: A real look into Chinese heritage Review: I absolutely loved this book! Being a Chinese-American myself, I felt that this book really did have a lot of Chinese culture to it, not to mention history. This book did an excellent job showing what the Chinese had to go through when they first came to this country while incorporating the events which took place during the time. I have read almost all of Laurence Yep's books, and as much as I love all of them, this one is my favorite! An excellent read that is impossible to set down.
Rating: Summary: DRagon wings review Review: The book by Laurence Yep called "Dragon Wings" is a facinating story about the Tang people traveling to america back in the 1600 , 17oo's. This book is best for young adults , ages 12-15.The books vocabulary is a little more advanced and realistic in the situations that the Tang people go through, and it would be more difficult for younger children to comprehend. Dragon Wings doesnt contain any illustrations except for the front cover , because of the strong emotions the writer includes in the book such as "in my frusration, I cursed at them in tang language , i didn't want to give them the satisfaction of me crying " , quotes 8 year old Moon shadow as he is jeered at and taunted by the white demons, ( english , white men). Another great thing about this book is that it teaches young adults how to never give up, and fallow their dreams. "Dragon Wings" , is a book filled with mroal value that will hook the reader with strong emotions through out the book. Another strong emotion felt in this book is how little Moonshodow misses his farm, Mom , and grandma. HE says "I am afraid to begen to cry, I am afraid that she will feel what i feel, listening to her , but not being able to see or touch her." As you can see, this book is excelnt for great adults because it tells about love , loss , predjudice and much more.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Book Review: In many ways, this book was great, it described in detail how Americans are view by the Chinese in the late 1800/early 1900.
