Rating: Summary: Fun, difficult, but hard to understand. Review: The first book in Joe Dever and Gary Chalk's series 'Lone Wolf' starts with a masscre of an entire army and
ended with you becoming a hero in your country.
In this role-playing fantasy, you are Lone Wolf, a young member studying the art of the Kai, an army known
for their wisdom and abilities unlike normal men. One day, in the monastery where the Kai army lives and
studies, the ancient enemy of your country, the Darklords,
launch a sudden attack destroying the monastery and killing all of the members of the Kai, except you.
You set out to warn the King of Sommerlund that the
entire army has been killed. Without the Kai, the country
will be over run by the Darklords.
This book is like a Choose Your own Adventure, but you collect items, fight in combat and use money....all of which will decide your future.
The best feature of this book is you can use items that you have gained in future books.
I give this book a 7. Give it a try. You might end up buying many of the books in the series
Rating: Summary: Excellent!!! Review: The Lone Wolf books are simply the best solo role playing books available. If you like AD&D this is as close as you can get to it in a solo adventure book. Creative, detailed and approaching the sophistication of a novel. I'm in the process of collecting 1-20 now after losing several since I first bought them like ten years ago (wow has it been that long?)If you're interested in these type of books I would also recommend giving the Grail Quest books by J.H. Brennan a try- they're definitely not as advanced but are fun and kind of humorous.
Rating: Summary: imaginative- lacks some believability Review: These books (rating the 14 I read as a whole )were quite a distraction many years ago ... they were entertaining, exciting and sometimes engrossing. Still, the constant melodrama and sketchy details became grating at times. As the below reviewers mention, there is a wide range of stuff that you can get and use in various books, in ways that mostly make sense, and the skills you can get are diverse and original, if not quite balanced. A constant theme of these books is that you start out on some routine expedition, and get caught up in a conspiracy to overthrow the kingdom that you have to stop, the faceless characters around you get killed, you get beaten up, confront an all powerful monster or villain and destroy it, obtain another skill and some more items to use in the next book and move on. Often your are asked to make choices without being given a very clear picture of your surroundings ... most of the books could definitely have used about another 100 or so pages of clarifying information. Still, all in all, the books are good if you want the do some quasi-roll playing and don't have a group to do it with.
Rating: Summary: GREAT! What else can I say? Review: These books are the best of the role-playing world. They are colorful, with rich backgrounds and detailed characters, and have a new exciting plot every time. It took me several years of searching used book stores, but I found 1-20. I seriously hope Joe Dever begins printing in the U.S. again.
Rating: Summary: great book, great series Review: This book and series has been around for 13 years and its still in print. Does that tell you something? The series still captures my imagination 10 years later. My only objection is that sometimes you die by complete chance instead of by making a bad choice. Buy it, follow the rules, and enjoy!
Rating: Summary: The first book in the best role-playing series ever Review: This book is the best role-playing book I have ever read. Except for maybe the sequels. Not only is it a choose your own adventure book, but it's one that's written with a good enough plot to be a regular novel. You can develop your charachter and use skills and items in later books. I've read Tolkien and C.S. Lewis and I would say that this book and all the ones after it rank right up there with them. I recommend this book and all the sequels for anyone who likes role-playing and/or sci-fi.
Rating: Summary: A great start to a great series Review: This is a great book, anyone who says it isn't is wrong. The way the book series allows you to interact with it leads to a more interesting twist of an otherwise used type of reading. Not only that, but helping other people get through it is an even better aspect
Rating: Summary: A Great Starter Book of the Lone Wolf Series! Review: When I first saw this book in a Barnes + Noble store, I immediately got hooked. I loved the idea of getting items and taking different paths to get to accomplish my goals. The story is amazing with perils waiting around every turn. You never know when a ferocious Kraan might swoop down on you, or the floor fall right from under your feet! This book really does things right. I have books 1, 2, 4, and 5. I would like to get the whole series, but it seems that the books are out of stock everywhere. I hope the author decides to put all his books back in stock, because we adventurers can't wait for more Lone Wolf!
Rating: Summary: The Lone wolf series KicK-ASS!!!! Review: When I started reading the Lone Wolf series I was instantly hooked up. I really like role playing game books when i was around 10. I'm 17 and i still read the books written by Joe. He's one of my idols!! Because the book have stopped being sent to my local book store in Malaysia, i've only been able to read up to book 16. But when i'm bored I pick up book 1-16 and read away.!!!
Rating: Summary: This is book one of a Role Playing Adventure series. Review: You are Lone Wolf, the last suviving Kai. You must survive the journey to your nation's captial to warn the king that the evil forces are attacking and have killed all of the Kai except you. The Kai are a group of supreme warriors who traditionally lead your nation's military during war. Read this book series again and again and it's never the same as you must select a choice of action for each situation that will refer you to a specific paragraph that will tell you what happened as a result of that selected action
