Summary: on the occasion of my 10th reading....
Review: i am in love with douglas coupland. douglas, if you're reading this, your books have had a profound impact on my life and i count you as my favorite author (and one of my favorite canucks too!). "microserfs" is amazing. it's one of those books that i pass out to prospective friends, telling them that if they don't get it, well, then, our friendship is probably doomed.

i came across coupland my senior year of high school during a period when i was reading voraciously anything i could get my hands on. he stopped me dead in my tracks. i was - and still am - hooked. his new one, "miss wyoming", comes out in december and i already have it on order.

"microserfs" is a fine example of everything that is right (and a few things that are wrong, in the eyes of the average reader) with coupland. his characters are witty, intelligent, and most of all familiar. everyone knows a body-obsessed guy like todd, a guy who has meaningless sex in search of something better, or a girl like susan, just coming into her thirties with nothing meaningful to show for her life, therefore making changes, becoming a grrl and embracing who she is. i found myself in karla and dan. karla's need to be perfect, dan's constant desire to make his parents happy in a way that only jed could, all of this and more i find in myself. if you've never used a computer before, even if you fear computers, the characters will draw you along, make you want to know what happens next. coupland has once again found - or created - a microcosm that is as dear to his readers as the deadheads of "polaroids" or the teens-then-adults of "girlfriend."

there are a few definite things that can be seen detractions by new readers. the pages of computer thought are confusing. while i enjoyed the prince emulator, a non-computer person would probably just have been confused. also, coupland seems to appeal to a niche audience, leaving out a lot of the mainstream, john grisham and jan karon, oprah's book club type readers.

but all that aside, coupland has created another marvel and i am glad of it. part of me wishes he would get noticed by oprah or someone with similar power in the media world. i wish his brilliance would stop getting such a bad rap (i.e. the people mag review of "girlfriend"). but part of me, like a true indie fan, hopes he stays in his niche, writing for fans like me and you. i only hope that his new one is as good as this.

Summary: A brilliant and tasty slice of life
Review: Questing for a higher meaning in life is a constant theme in all of Coupland's books. Here a group of twenty to thirtysomethings have all come to realize that they have no life outside of the womb of the Microsoft campus so they set off to find out if there is a better life out there somewhere.

No one has a better voice for the modern generation than Coupland and nowhere is he better than in this book. Recommended with no reservations!

Summary: A better decomposer than entertainment
Review: I ripped the covers off of this book and through it out the window. That just about sums up my opinion.

Summary: NOT just a book for computer programmers!
Review: I can assure you, you've never read anything like "Microserfs" before, and it may take some getting used to, but you will not regret it. I've read "Microserfs" numerous times, and each time it's like revisiting an old, treasured friend. Fantastic!

Summary: Don't miss this read
Review: Having lived in both Seattle and Silicon Valley I nearly pissed my pants laughing at this book. I have read most of Coupland's novels and this one provides an incredible read. Coupland HAS his finger on the pulse of twentysomething culture.....

Summary: cout << "And I thought my life was boring!" << endl;
Review:
"You know what? This is a *really* nerdy book!! If this book was a man, he'd be wearing a checkered shirt, taped glasses, and unkempt hair. If this book was a woman, she'd be wearing a messy bun on her head and complaining about sinuses while downing a bottle of orange Triaminic. Oh man... Lots of computer jargon and "inside" jokes."

Unless you're a computer whiz who gets his/her hee-haws from laughing at people who don't know all the cool acronyms and neat-o chat signs :p, pass on this one. IMHO. I wish I had. Could have spent my $ on a nifty pocket protector instead. LOL. ;)

Summary: another rave - but the book deserves it
Review: i've seen the term 'bible' used to describe this book, and it's perfect. any programmer will instantly bond with and understand the characters. this was the first coupland book i read and it's my favorite. anyone up for a road trip to vancouver to camp out on doug's lawn?

Summary: the funniest must read for every young computer programmer
Review: i read this book after the first year as a programmer and i couldn't put it down. i could pick out myself in the characters and classify most of my other co-workers. it's like a bible to me now and i've read it 3 or 4 times so far. *highly* suggested in my opinion. (ps. hello jed)

Summary: Smart, funny and you even learn a little something.
Review: I just read Microserfs for the second time, and I couldn't put it down any more than I could the first time. I saw a lot of myself my own friends in Coupland's characters, and I got to really care about what happened to them. Even if you're not really into computers it's a great read, but it's all the better if you can understand the jokes that the gang makes based upon computer terms. The most ironic thing to me about this book is that I pictured the main character as Matthew Perry (Chandler of Friends) and then I found out that the audio version was read by him. Anyway, pick it up and don't put it down until the end!

Summary: this is one great book
Review: This book is a great blend of humor and meaningful literature. Although it doesn't have too wide of an audience, I think it's really well done, and defenitely worth reading. The ending is very good also.
