Rating: Summary: "An O.k book" Review: "Eva" is a book about a girl named Eva who wakes up in a hospital bed, later finding out that she's in a body of a chimpanzee. If someone asked me what I thought about "Eva" by Peter Dickinson I would say that it wasn't what I expected. I say that because the beginning was good and the ending was good but it was the middle of the story that became a little boring. Altogether the beginning and end were written good, but the middle wasn't written as good as the beginning and the end. For someone who likes books about chimpanzees and surgeries and other medical "stuff" I recommend this book!
Rating: Summary: Startling Review: As we follow Eva's story, from her first view of the world after a coma until her death several years later, we begin to admire and respect brave, clever Eva; and even agree with her when she decides to live a new kind of life, a kind of life that no one has ever lived before
Rating: Summary: Eva in science class? Review: Don't let your middle school science teacher assign this maybe-interesting read to your class, gives it a grandiose position it doesn't deserve in the science community. Blurs the lines between humans/chimps, pretty scary for the 13 year old experiment, too squishy on the ethics and short on the science. Fine summer read, if you feel the urge to run wild through the jungle...
Rating: Summary: Eva Summary Review: Eva had always gotten along with Chimpanzees very well, always. She had been raised around Chimps, and could understand they're "language". She had always loved them as animals, but what doctors had turned her into, she was not prepared for. She was popular, pretty, and athletic... but when she got into the tragic car accident, she did not know that having her life saved by doctors had a price greater than money. She woke up in the hospital room, joined by her parents, showing her an overwhelming amount gizmos and gadgets - to help her adjust to the change in her appearance. What change? What had the doctors done to her? Why was it so horrible that the doctors had a special device, just so she was PREVENTED from looking in the mirror? What had they done to her, and how will she react? Find out how Eva lives through her life with this great change. Find out how it effects her atitude towards life, and overall personality. I really enjoyed this book. It gave me a chance to use my imagination, and I feel that Peter Dickinson did a great job to describe the life of a unique young girl who's life was changed in a second by doctors. I recommend this book to anyone that is able to use a little imagination.
Rating: Summary: Okay book. Nice and creative idea, but missing that lure. Review: Eva is a good book. I enjoyed it, but I found some parts stupid. An example of this is how EVA's diary jumps around from a few days after to twenty-four years!! I personally would have liked to hear more about her relationships with the monkeys more and would have liked to know more about her children's early life.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful Review: Eva is the most wonderful book! I would recommend it to anyone I met because it has a great storyline - a wonderful beginning, middle, and, especially, a great ending! The only problem is you have to be determined to read this book or have the patience to keep on reading because the beginning is somewhat slow, but you're in for a treat at the end.
Rating: Summary: Unique and Visionary Book for Teens Review: Eva is the story of a teenage girl who is in a car accident and undergoes a procedure to enable her to keep living. The first part of the book concentrates on Eva awakening and adapting to her new self and is excellent. Teens will definitely identify with her feelings of separation and her frustration at her lack of control. They may also learn from her strong will and unfailing attitude. The second part of the book concentrates on Eva's newfound "purpose" in life. Her new life is worlds away from her old life as a pretty, admired teen. What she decides to do with her life, her fame, and her self are very intriguing and the author uses her situation to voice views about conservation, animal welfare and rights, and the state of the human race and condition. Some readers may find this portion of the book preachy, but I found it very valuable and an interesting frame for familiar views. Eva is well-written and exciting. Descriptions are extremely vivid and realistic, and I found it easy to get involved in the story. The characters are very defined and skillfully drawn. This is a valuable book for humans of all ages.
Rating: Summary: Waking to find a new life Review: Eva used to be a normal person. A car accident leaves her in a coma for six months. Her parents have to choose whether they want her to live or die. They want her to live, but the only way to do that is for her to undergo an incredible operation. When she finally wakes up she finds herself leading a completely new life. She doesn't mind it, but the media won't leave her alone. Now her turn to make a statement
Rating: Summary: 1.5 Stars; Mediocre Review: Eva was a slow moving story, yet was interesting and thought-provoking. The plot was not very appealing, but since the story takes place in the future, some of the technology that is described is very interesting. Also, the procedures done to Eva make you think. Could it really happen in the future? Is it moral or ethical? All that was good in the book. The characters, on the other hand, were undeveloped (except maybe for Eva). In parts, the story seemed to be sloppily written. Also, I was disappointed with how the story ended. You might want quite a bit of time on your hands to read this book because it is not a page-turner. It is more like a read a page a day type of book. So if you are into Science Fiction (or blah) stories, try this book.
Rating: Summary: Interesting & thought-provoking Review: Hello, I wrote another review of this book and I want to tell you something else - this book shows the coldness of our society. It is heavy on ethical topics (should we destroy a girl's life so she can live; is a chimpanzee less important than a person), and light on interesting events. Like I warned you, read it if you want, but don't expect it to be very interesting. It really does show the coldness of our medical community and general society. I started reading it because it's on a reading competition list. It was almost a good book. But it just didn't capture my attention but it did make me think, which is good.
