Rating: Summary: RIGHT....... Review: Although i agree that this book was slow moving and the characters roles could have delve deepe into another story this was a good book....It's not about action so i don't understand why you would gather that from it it's about relatinships and hardship not action!!! I suggest this to the young history buff if interested in HISTORY NOT action
Rating: Summary: Not the Best, But Interesting Review: Although it's not the best I've ever read, (which is partly why I gave it a 4-star rating) The Ramsay Scallop is interesting, particularly for people who like long-ago stories and who are doing reports for the years around 1300. As for just a fun-read, it's okay. The characters go through a lot of development. For instance, when they leave on a pilgramage, Eleanor and Thomas (they're betrothed, by the way), at first they hate each other. They don't talk at all, and one will do something the other person has warned against, just to spite the other person. By the end, though, they have come to love each other and Eleanor has gotten to know the world a little better. The Plot: After Thomas returns from the Crusades, not all that stable after all the killing he has seen, the resident 'preist' sends both Thomas and Eleanor on a pilgrimage. He hopes to let them get to know each other a little better. The rest of the book is about the people they meet and the adventures they have. There are many different stories within this book, mostly tales told by people they meet up with during the journey. So the plot is mostly about their journey. It's a very educational story, telling a lot how life was back then. But if you're the type of person, like me, that loves adventure, you won't get much of it in this book. I'd say it's best for ages 9&up.
Rating: Summary: Hated It Review: Book summary was nothing like what the book was about at all. Not much of a fantastic or worthy middle ages book to read. Found CATHERINE, CALLED BIRDY much more interesting and challenging.
Rating: Summary: Ramsy Scallop review Review: I didn't think this book would be as interesting as it sounded on the back cover. As a teenager, I thought this book was boring and not worth reading. In the book, the two did not have enough chemistry to make the book interesting. It kept going on and on and had too much detail for me, when I thought it should have been less descriptive, at times. Yet, also at times I would feel that it was worth reading, because some parts of this book were quite exciting. Over all, I did not like the book as much as I thought I would, and would definetly rate it being 2 out of 5 stars.
Rating: Summary: great book Review: I don't know what these other reviewers are complaining about. This was a great book! Okay, so it's a girl book. But the people are real and the pilgrimage part was accurate, and the characters seemed like people I might know. Go read it!
Rating: Summary: An excellent book! Very complex! Review: I really like this book because it made you cry in the sad parts, and laugh in the happy ones. All the characters were very real and you just had to love them all. It's very rare to find a book on medieval pilgrimages, and its definitely one-of-a-kind.
Rating: Summary: Subtle, Romantic, and Historically Enlightening Review: I teach children's literature to teachers and found this novel to be one of the most moving, charming, and riveting I have encountered. The tale is subtle and beautifully told. Eleanor and Thomas, betrothed from childhood and strangers to each other, are sent on a pilgrimage from their English village by the wise and kind village priest. They and the reader learn about their world and the blooming of friendship and love as they travel across Europe. This book is among my very favorites. Ranks with Mary Stolz's BARTHOLEMEW FAIR.
Rating: Summary: I wouldn't want an Arranged Marriage! Review: I thought the Ramsay Scallop was an interesting book.It moved at a very slow pace and wasn't very exciting. I like a ton of action in books and this one had none. By reading the back cover the book sounded good, but once I started it is was really boring. It just had no excitement. It was interesting to learn about pilgrimages though.I would have never liked to be put in a spot such as Elenor or Thomas. It was interesting to read once, but I would never read it a second time.
Rating: Summary: Not very good. Very dissapointed Review: I was very dissapointed in this book, where's their arranged marriage that both are trying to overcome? The synoposis of the supposed "book" didn't at all come out to what the book was when I read it. Worst of all, I couldn't see where and why the two hated and disliked each other so in the beginning. So they didn't want to get married, but they didn't play out any scenes that showed why in the end, the found it inevitable. This book is quite similar to CROWN DUEL and COURT DUEL, which I though was written better off. Readers should read all three books, and decide wheter I really did read this book at all, or am right about calling this book a huge door stopper.
Rating: Summary: Do You Want to Die of Boredom? Review: I'll start by saying that I haven't finished reading this book. The reason for that is because it is seriously one of the most, if not THE most boring book I have ever read! It seemed promising at first, and I thought it would be an interesting look at medieval life and an arranged marriage relationship between the two main characters, Elenor and Thomas. WRONG!!!! It quickly backslid into the most slow-moving book when Elenor and Thomas began their journey on a pilgrimage. The writing style is very unnaturally choppy-one thing that really hurts this book is the fact that there is virtually no conversation between Elenor and Thomas during their journey-I realize that they may not want to be around each other much, yet still I think such close proximity would "force" them to converse beyond monosyllables! This book also has absolutely no action. "The Ramsay Scallop" just seems to drag on forever, and you never seem to feel a lot of interest in the characters or that delightful feeling of suspense that just comes naturally when you are reading a good book. Since I'm reading this book in a school novel study, I guess I'll have to finish it-but I certainly don't have much hope in this book being a "winner." So, you've been warned-the side effects of reading this book might include depression (just thinking about finishing it saddens you), drowsiness (as I said it has no action whatsoever), and violent feelings (against the book, the teacher that made you read it, etc.). My advice? Skip this bore of a book and choose one of Karen Cushman's more lively accounts of life in the Middle Ages.
