Summary: A classic: Buy the Whole Series
Review: The whole ``Great Brain'' series was my absolute favorite somewhere between the Hardy Boys years (ages 6-8) and the Hobbit years (ages 10-26). These books have the same gentle, antique pace as the Laura Ingalls Wilder books, but from a male perspective.

I wouldn't touch the Wilder books with a ten-foot-pole, but I could certainly relate to Tom Dennis Fitzgerald, who took a paddling without crying; who started parochial school in trouble because he went to the priest filthy with coal dust from driving the train; who taught his brother to fight because ``There's nobody so tolerant and understanding as a kid you can whip.''

Buy the whole series. Read it for yourself; read it to your kids.

Summary: The Great Brain Series
Review: It was a sad day when I rediscovered the joy of browsing bookstores and discovered my childhood escapes were gone. The Black Stallion,Henry Huggins, and my most favorite The Great Brain series were no longer amoung the living. Replaced by trash like Henry Potter and Goosebumps. Parents, please do your children a favor and purchase the entire Great Brain collection. They will not read more poignant, funny life instruction than these classics from J.D. Fitzgerald. The story is told from J.D.'s point of view as he shares the adventures of he and his older brother Tom in turn of the century Morman dominated Utah. Tom is the title character who becomes the focal point of an entire town called Adenville due to his uncanny shrewdness and ablity to "swindle" his playmates and even adults out of their money. No where else will a child get a better education on how to go along and get along with those of different religions, ethnicity, and physical limitations. I have read the books at least 20 times a piece and always found something new. It is both a mystery and distressful that none of our publishers have the sense to reprint these classics. Do your child and yourself a favor and find these books!

Summary: The Great Brain is the best
Review: I am Brianna. I live in Minnesota.I think you'll really like The Great Brain. It has a lot of good details and descripiton.

My favorite part was when the frog got in Marie's desk. I think that was kind of funny. My favorite person was Tom because he had the great brain and he was always solving problems.

Who ever reads this book will think it is great.

Summary: A glowing repeat
Review: I'm sorry to write the same as everyone else, but if you are not familiar with the book, chidren or not, you should be. I read " The Great Brain " early in grade school, and through the years forgot the title but always remembered the story. It wasn't until having a nephew that I seeked this wonderful memory from my past again. I'm 27 and was spellbound. This book, as the rest of the series, are that good. It also important to point out the lessons the parents teach, and how they dealt with there sons unique misadventures.

Summary: Still just as good
Review: I read these books as a kid, and I loved them. I bought one and re-read it, and it's just as good. These will be required reading for my kids. I didn't realize it nearly as much as a child, but there's a lot of good messages in these books. He doesn't disguise them, he comes right out and says what he thinks about what kids should hear. He's big on tolerance, be it racial, religious, or anything.

Summary: The Great Brain
Review: I first read this book and the others in the series as a sixth-grader back in the mid-70s. I, too, read them over and over! I was so enthralled with the stories that I did what I always did with terrific books: looked for any other books by the same author. I was thrilled to discover that in addition to this fictionalized version of J.D.'s childhood, he had also written three non-fiction books detailing his family history and experience in late 19th century Utah: Uncle Will and the Fitzgerald Curse, Papa Married a Mormon, and Mama's Boarding House. I promptly checked them out of the library and devoured them all. They are wonderful stories and an informative background to the Great Brain series. I add my plea to that of another reviewer: SOMEONE, PLEASE REPRINT THESE BOOKS by John D. Fitzgerald! They are a treasure that should not remain relegated to the dusty shelves of used bookstores!

I am currently reading The Great Brain to my six-year old son. At first I was afraid that the writing was a little too sophisticated for him, but with an explanation here and a definition there, he's doing just fine with it. He laughed uproariously at the scene in the opening chapter of the public uncrating and display of the first water closet (indoor flush toilet)in Adenville. These stories are terrific entertainment, as well as history lessons. They give kids a sense of how daily life was a century ago from a kid's perspective.

Summary: timeless entertainment
Review: As a young Mormon boy in Australia, 'The Great Brain' series was one of my fondest boyhood reads. I enjoyed the series so much I recently forced my wife to read the book. She loved it and has just finished reading it to my 3 month old son. I am considering buying the entire series so that my boy can grow up loving it like it did. The fact that it is set 100 years ago is meaningless as everyone of any age can enjoy the stories and simple childhood fun of the Fitzgerald brothers and the rest of Adenville.

Review: This book is very good.My favorite part in this book is when this kid beat Sammy and wins the title of the best wrestler in their town. What was amazing was that this kid got his leg taken off. The reason is because he stepped on a rusted nail and his lower hlf of his leg got infected by it. He didn't belive he could do it but he did. This is a really good back book and every one should read it.

Summary: Fantastic Book for a Kid
Review: I loved this whole series of books when I was a kid in the 70s. I read them over and over and over. These were the books that started me on an enthusiastic lifetime of reading. I am buying them for my 7 year old daughter for Christmas this year in the hopes of continuing the tradition.
