Standing on tiptoe, Allegra kissed Justin.

Allegra jumped and turned toward Justin, her hand to her throat. You scared me to death."

"What are you doing?" Justin asked.

"Rinsing out my bikini."

"No, I mean, what are you doing out here, in the water, in the middle of the night?"

"I was hot." Allegra waded back to shore. She stood in front of him, topless. "What are you doing here?"

"I was looking---searching for you," Justin said uneasily. "Why are you over here on this side of the island?"

"So I could take off my suit and not worry about being seen," Allegra said. "I didn't expect to be followed."

"I'm sorry," he said. "I just---"

"Don't be sorry," Allegra said. She stepped nearer to him. Standing on tiptoe, Allegra kissed Justin. Over his shoulder, she could see the shadowy figure of Kate, her blond hair whipping back in the breeze, her face pale and dismayed even by moonlight.
