Summary: A fresh outlook on faith v. fanatic
Review: "Leaving Fishers" is about a 15 or 16 year old girl named Dorry who moves from Indianapolis from small-town Ohio. She's all alone in school, until this great group of kids ask her to eat with them. They're all beautiful, smart, and confident, and they quickly accept her. Soon, she finds out that they're part of a religious group called "Fishers of Men", and they want her to join. Against her better judgement, she does, and feels enlightened, happy, and fufilled--at first. Soon, the group's expectations of her rise. She finds herself turning away everything in her old life to please the Fishers. But one day, their expectations get so high, and she's forced to step back and asess the situation. It's a great story with developed characters and real conflict. I recommend it to anyone.

Summary: Leaving Fishers Book Review
Review: "You are damned Dorry Stevens! You are one of the lost! " Angela called after her............. Dorry Stevens was just a regular teenage high school student attending Crestwood High in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA. Noone liked her, noone ever talked to her, and noone even cared that she was there. Dorry was awfully lonely. All she wanted to do was go back to Bryden, Ohio, USA. Thats where all of her friends were. But her mom and dad wouldn't let her. One day, while eating lunch at school, a beautiful blonde haired girl comes up to Dorry and asked her to eat lunch with her and her group of her friends. Dorry almost choked, and she was soooo happy. So day by day Dorry ate lunch with the group. Soon Angela, the blonde haired girl, persuades Dorry to join a religious group she's in called Fishers of Men. She says it's a wonderful experience and the answer to everything. So Dorry figured "Why not? My parents don't care, they don't attend church! I don't think they even believe in God!" So 1 Saturday night, Dorry goes to a Fishers party and absolutely loves it. Then Angela asks Dorry to go with her to the church on Sunday. So she does. Time goes by and Angela tells Dorry more and more about Fishers. The only thing she doesn't tell her is that it's an evil, brain-washing cult. Soon Dorry finds herself spending less time with her family and doing wierd things. Will Dorry realize Fishers is a cult? Will she stay or quit? I wont tell you, go get the book and find out. Margaret Haddix is a great author and even though she based this particular book at a high school level, she uses words that you easily understand. Even at a junior high level. I really enjoyed this book. I will tell you that for me, the beginning was kinda boring, but by the 4th or 5th chapter you really start to enjoy it. So go get this book and read it and DO NOT just skip to the end, you won't understand a thing unless you read it from beginning to end.

Summary: Leaving Fishers
Review: (...) The book Leaving Fishers was an okay book. I was waiting for an exciting ending but it just ended. Overall the plot was well written. To me I think the best part of a book is the begining and the ending so that is why I only give this book 3 stars. Thank you for reading my book review. Bye

Summary: Leaving Fishers Review
Review: Alone. That's what Dorry Stephens was. Dorry had just moved from a small town in Ohio to Indianapolis and had no friends. Then Fishers came and wanted to be Dorry's friends. They even invited her to join their church. Or cult. As Dorry becomes more involved with Fishers, the less she is involved with everything else. She no longer has time for her family or school.

I think Margaret Peterson Haddix wrote this book very well. She took us through Dorry's mind like we were her, or at least knew her. Its one book I've read where the main character isn't popular, pretty, and rich. She doesn't even have that giggly best friend. Its very realistic about the people and Fishers itself. A few things I didn't like were that it got a little slow in a few parts, some things happened more than once, and the ending was too predictable. You could definitely see it coming. I think the flaws of the book are covered by the good points. The book was very good and I would definitely recommend it.

Summary: Another Review
Review: Angela and her "religous" group will seem nice enough to you and the main character Dorry, but things start to change, suspiciously. The author, Margaret Peterson Haddix, leaves out nothing, but dosen't directly tell you what will happen. I enjoyed this book and I hope you do too!

Summary: Leaving Fishers REview..
Review: because just about everyone else summed up the story im not going to and im going to expect u have read the reviews already and get the gist of it...however i will talk about wat i thought about it..

...so...

i thought leaving fishers was an amazing book...obviously Haddix is a good writer if u have read other books by her u would no....this book was one of those books that u just cant put down. i was on mnyu way home from vacation and i read it all the way throught hte car, in a resteraunt, onto the plane, where i finished it.

its extremely good because its such a deep issue. i wouldnt reccomend u read it unless u think ur mature enough or at least 11 or 12. It really goes into depth in wich u really think about religion. the book almost sucks u into the religious cult for a while. u yourself may begin thinking about joining a new religion such as this wen u begin to read it. it feels new and amzing and u WANT to be w/ god...then it shows the horror of cults through this girls experiance. it shows you how these cults are NOT good and of course shows that they are cults..many times pplz dont nno they are in a cult. this book hleps to show you wat one is. At the end you learn exactly how that cult worked and how it sucked her into it.

i think its really important to read a book like this becuz not only is it a great story but w/o reading it you might never learn about religious cults and might not no u are in one if u are. plus as i mentioned the book realy makes u think about religion and god. It makes u think deeply about wat u want, even if u are young or totally not into religion.

my friend is a part of a religion, jehovas whitness which i will not say mean things about, because of course its not a bad thing. although i looked it up and many say it is NOT a religious cult this book got me wondering about it. so many things in this book seem like my friendz religion and i really wish she could read it along with the millions of other kids sucked inot these religious cults.

i do beleive tha tpplz should have religion but dont think it should be ur main part of life and should RULE everything u say and do. this book really made me think about wat i wanted, which was this. i dont think u should do bad things b/c ur religion

well im getting kinda offtopic but my point is, its an extremely good book, READ IT. its not like a book of facts. its a story. and u learn things through it. it really is amazing.

Summary: Prevention against cults.
Review: Daring to say, this is a story fit for a theme "Family Dealing with Change". This made me recollect a recent(?) terrorism by a cult in Japan. I think this is a chilling portrait of an insecure teenager gradually being mind-controlled by a cult. This may be useful as prevention against recruitment by cults.

Summary: A girl so desperate to make friends, she'll risk anything
Review: Dorry soon joins a group called Fishers of Men. Everything starts off as magical as anything. Dorry can't believe how nice these people are. Angela keeps telling her everyone loves her. But soon things start to change. Angela becomes strict and completely controlling and gives Dorry no time for herself. Dorry is afraid to admit anything in fear of Angela's face of disgust when her sins went up. Dorry whirls in a puzzle of truth and self-deprivation, losing what she had, and not having a clue what she has gained. She starts doing things she never imagined she would truly do. She goes against her parents will. Dorry must get her self out of here before its too late.

Summary: Well written but falls short
Review: Haddix is a talented writer who portrays realistic characters. However the book doesn't explore the thoughts that drive people to such actions deeply enough. I put this one down feeling like more could have been said.
