I was sick with the flu, and I found a copy of HEIDI, so I crawled into a nice warm bed and re-read the book -- as an adult. What insight into human nature! And as an adult I appreciated the dry, understated humor. I also appreciated the spiritual insights -- that God will give us what we desire, but sometims uses circumstances we don't like to teach us truths that we couldn't learn otherwise. When I was a girl I was often turned off by what was called "good reading," but for some reason, I enjoyed Heidi and it never seemed sappy or corny. Very much worth reading!

Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Consider the Children's Classics edition Review: Despite being marketed as "complete and unabridged," Eileen Hall's readable translation for the Puffin edition is in fact abridged. She condensed/omitted some of the longer descriptions of nature and piety. Other editions abridge even more liberally. The Children's Classics edition (ISBN 0517189674) is NOT abridged and is a fine translation for children with a strong vocabulary. (It's also an illustrated, hardbound edition at a paperback price.) Every girl should have this book read to them when they are, say, six or seven; then the adult doing the reading can help with the vocabulary.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Heidi Review: Heid is a loving story just right for children of all ages. A 10 year old orphan girl must live with her grandfather on the alm. He is known to be a very grumpy, old man, but he takes Heidi into his heart and cares for her as his own daughter. No matter what Heidi goes through she always manages to find her way back to her grandfather. I absolutely loved the book Heidi, and am sure that many other people, from a wide range of ages, would too.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Another children's classic Review: Heidi - the tinist girl with the largest, most selfless and innocent heart. Heidi is one of those characters who seems just too good to be true (the fact that Shirley Temple played her in the movie version shows that everyone agrees on this point) but she is so endearing and fun that you forget how "good" she is and just enjoy her. I imagine that I would find living in the Alps with a quiet old man, an ignorant goatherd, a blind old woman and a passel of goats to be a rather tame existence, but through Heidi's eyes it seems the epitome of the good life. Heidi is a model of childish virtue (like Sara Crewe of A Little Princess and Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm) but appealing and inspiring, rather than boring and prosy. She is truly a good soul, and her story is a must-read for every young and old girl alike.
Rating: ![1 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-1-0.gif) Summary: Heidi was dull Review: Heidi is a book about a girl who goes to live with her grandfather in the mountains. When I read this book, all through-out it I was wondering 'when is this going to be over?' I found this book dull, because nothing ever happened. I'm more into adveture books, but I thought I'd try a classic. This book is for anyone who likes slow books. I thought it would get more exciting towards the end, but it didn't. I feel the author explained things well, but the story bored me.
