Rating: Summary: A breif summary, some thoughts. Review: The two main characters in the story are Leonard Small, and George Milton. They have one dream: to own a peice of land they can call their own [with Lennie (who is Leonard) tending the rabbits]. To get land, you need to purchase it. To purchase, you need money. So Lennie and George have been going from town to town, mostly because they can't stay in one place too long before Lennie makes a mistake, forcing them to flee. They get jobs at a ranch. They make friends, such as Candy, the swamper, Slim, the skinner, and crooks, the negro stable boy. However, life isn't so peachy keen at this ranch. The flirtatious wife of Curley, the bosses son, is a threat to everyone who works there. For Curley is a very possessive man, who will beat anyone up, who is bigger than he is (maybe even Lennie). Will Curley's wife, who doesn't seem to have a name, cause trouble for George and Lennie, maybe evening ruining their dream? Will Lennie's ignorance to his own strength cause trouble at this town also? Well, you should read the book to find out. The reason I didn't give five stars to this book, is because I think the end was too sudden. It didn't seem right. Maybe you will think differently if you read the book.
Rating: Summary: Of Mice And Men (Review) Review: In the book Of Mice And Men Steinbeck uses a language that a common person would. I say this because he does not use many fancy words to try to make his book seem like a better book. He also tells about how life can sometimes be mean and hateful like the many times George gets mad at Lenny because he is slow and can not remember things too well. Steinbeck also writes about how life was for two guys during the great depression, and how people had to travle from place to place looking for work. He also writes in this book about how guys would save their money up and go into town on the weekend. Personally I like this book because he tells how life was during the time of the great depression.
Rating: Summary: Well written, but very depressing material Review: If you love well written books and don't care if the ending is happy or sad then this is the book for you. However, if you are like me and enjoy well writen books, but must have a happy ending then you will want to avoid this book. Steinbeck has a wonderful writing style with excellant descriptions of nature. Of Mice and Men also very accurately depicts what life was like during The Depression. Unfortunately as it takes place during The Depression it is very depressing. Of Mice and Men tells the story of two best friends George and Lenny. George is the leader of the two, while Lenny who is mentally retarded is the willful and very sweet follower. Both are 30 years old, but neither acts his age. While George acts older and more mature, Lenny has the IQ of a four year old. This problem is the theme of the entire book. I hope you enjoy Of Mice and Men.
Rating: Summary: A CLASSIC STORY BY A MASTER STORY TELLER Review: This is a great story by a great writer. John Steinbeck is one of my favorite writers and he didn't let me down with this touching tale of two friends who work the fields of California. I opened the book and didn't put it down until I was finished....I find that his characters are the best part of his stories. I really like how he makes his characters so 'human'. Steinbeck tells a story like some of the greatest artist paint pictures.
Rating: Summary: One of the best books I've ever read Review: I loved the book! I had to read it for english and it was an in class assignment so we read thru it together. The 2 main characters, George and Lennie, go from town to town looking for work. most people think that it's weird that 2 men would travel together(not that way). Everyone thinks that George is taking Lennie's pay check and using to go to town and use it for the whorehouse. It had vivid descriptions and pictures that I had acutally thought I had lived and worked with them. It does have some foul language, but if you focus on the language then you will not be able to read thru it and feel the emotion. Also if a 12 year old could read it then most likely anyone could. The book covers the following topics: life in the early century (30's), racial prejudice, prostitution, and the all american dream. There's also a tear-jerking ending so be forewarned. Overall, (obviously) I loved it!!!
Rating: Summary: A Book you will not be able to put down! Review: Mysteries and horrors and love stories OH MY. More often then not readers are over whelmed by the stories they read. But not this one, Of Mice and Men is an easy reading book that one is going to have a very difficult time putting down. I found myself reading five and six chapters in one sitting. This book has a story that will touch everyone who reads it. Of Mice and Men is a story about two migrant workers, friends, who are moving from farm to farm in search of work. The adventures and dedication of these two men as they search of a better life, is the main focus of this book. Of Mice and Men is filled with ups and downs, twists and turns that will keep one wondering how it is going to end. This book is like no other. I think everyone should be required to read this book. I am certain that it will have a life changing affect. It did me. Of Mice and Men will make you appreciate your friends, what they do and mean to you.
Rating: Summary: A Great Little Novel Review: When I read this book I was twelve and I loved it. I still do. It is a compelling, heart-warming story, although the ending is quite sad. I recommend it to anyone who likes classic novels. It's one of those books that keeps you thinking about the story days after you've finished it.
Rating: Summary: Locker Room Review: The John Steinbeck novella, "Of Mice and Men", was depressing and boring. I did not agree with the mentality of the characters, nor did I agree with everyone in my 8th grade class liking Lennie. Although he is sweet and has the sense of a young child, he still is a destrucitve force in the world and, although he is slighty retarted, he is insane. Steinbeck shows us this when Lennie waits for George in the brush and starts talking to his dead Aunt Clara and a huge rabbit. I have nothing against retared or insane people, but how could you like him? He kills things, wether on accident or not. Also, I found the "Locker Room" mentality kind of distrubing. Yes, people in locker rooms do talk that way, but, I think that is was wrong for the book. All the swearing and talking of whorehouses were all alittle too real. When I read I want to get away from the world, not read about it!
Rating: Summary: Really boring Review: I know a lot of people are going to be mad at me for saying that I HATE this book, which is why I have decided to leave this anonymous. Anyway, it's probably just a personal thing. It was very boring. The fact that I had to read it for my english class and write an essay about it probably didn't help, but I NEVER would have read this on my own. The writing isn't even that great. And the only reason people like it is because it's a classic. And the only reason it's a classic is because you've been TOLD it's a classic! It's an old book, and it has some theme and deep symbolic meaning, blah blah blah. But if you actually want a good book, I don't suggest this one. If you have to read this for your english class, I feel sorry for you.
Rating: Summary: A book you won't forget Review: I had to read "Of Mice And Men" while I was in high school, and it turned out to be a pretty good book. When the teacher first gave me one of the copies of it, I already liked it cause it didn't have too many pages to read. However, once I finished it, I wished that it was a little longer cause it really was a good book. It's about George and Lennie trying to find a job so they can one day fulfill their dream and have a big farm of their own. They land a job, but it's not all smooth sailing like they hoped it would be. Lennie is a big man who is a little bit retarded, so he doesn't know what he's doing sometimes, but he sure is strong and can do a lot of work in a short time. George has to try his best to keep Lennie out of trouble while they're working and trying to save up enough money to get the farm.John Steinbeck did a good job writing this book, it'll keep you interested the whole time you're reading it without losing your interest. Some of the parts you'll remember from the book, even a few years after you read it, are when Lennie crushes a tough boxer's hand, and when George and Lennie are talking to Slim about the farm that they want to own one day. The movie goes along like an adventure book, while Lennie gives some parts of the story a little bit of humor. If you like great classic books, I recommend getting "Of Mice And Men."
