Summary: A poetic & beautiful tale of friendship
Review: Two girls; one dark, one light, different as can be, yet together make the perfect image of a teenage girl.

Violet is an aspiring goth-dressed film-maker with a deep adoration for movies, directing, acting, and film. Violet used to call herself 'Vile' when she used to be suicidal, and now she says that movies literally saved her life.

Claire is a soft-spoken, sweet and ethereal girl living in a trailer park with her single, depressed mom. Claire tries to escape reality by dreaming of a race of faeries and writing poetry to escpae the darkness that surrounds her every single day.

On the outside, they're as different as can be. They meet one day in the school yard when Violet spots Claire and decides that she is the starlet for her movie she wants to create, and calls her "Tink". Violet drives away some guys who are picking on Claire, and soon they become friends.

Cut to English class. Violet gazing at the teacher. 'What was Lady Macbeth's fatal flaw?' her teacher waa-waas (as in Charlie Brown, the adults on on another level as kids and therefore waa-waa, and don't speak normally) 'Ambition' is the answer. Violet soon comes into contact with a filming agency exec and is offered a job. As Violet gets drawn into the world of high-powered Hollywood movie industry, her ambition and drive to succeed lead her astray from her budding friendship with Claire, and into the dangerous world of money, sex and drugs.

Claire herself is finding new things in her life to occupy her, as well. In a coffee shop, Claire finds an ad in a paper advertising a 'poetry for screenwriters' seminar, and Claire finds herself drawn to the man in the ad. She drags Violet along with her, and soon meets Peter Brookman, a sensitive poet not unlike Claire, who leads the class. She finds herself deeply inspired and also, falling in love.

Drawn into different worlds, all these factors threaten to rip this photo-negative friendship apart, threatening to 'fade into black' forever, one thing alone in the world is strong enough to make two halves whole again.

Summary: Hit!!!
Review: This book is extremely good. What it may lack in substance is made up in a clear, edgy technique that leaves the reader feeling content. If you aren't into surrealism meets hard-core reality, then you may not pick this up. I personally find it extremely well-told, and an excellent read for all young adults. The story of friend-ship is told in a depressing, but over-all healing way, and I think Block really captures all of our lives; there is happiness, and sadness...we decide what feeling is ALWAYS impacting us. BUY IT NOW!!!

Summary: Block falls short
Review: I wish that there were a way to give this book two different ratings. I find that Block is an excellent description writer, so if you are looking to add more color and light to your writing I would recommend reading and studying her work, because I'm sure it would help. However, Block falls short in creating a solid story, she does not establish things well, including the girls friendship, from which the entire novel is based. Throughout the novel you are hopping from place to place wondering how it got to this place and that. As I was looking at other reviews for her various books I noticed some similar to mine, and those that rated her highly were simply relating to or wanting to be like one of the characters. I found that this book lacked substance and unless you are a diehard Block fan I would not recommend getting it.

Summary: #1
Review: This book is my favourite book of all time. I am Claire and my best friend (my soul sister) is Violet. I can really relate to this book and it opens my eyes to the everyday magic that surrounds me. It also reminds me of how much I love my violet girl goddess.

Summary: Violet and Claire
Review: Violet and Claire was an interesting novel with all of Block's creative flair. The girls confide in each other, even though the world around them is spinning, changing, and cruel. Violet and Claire save each other and help themselves become stronger.

I liked this book because each girl softened the other's world, and even just for a second, making the cruel real world seem safer.

Summary: ...a happy ending!
Review: I love Francesca Lia Block's novels, and I found this to be one of her best. The main characters, Violet and Claire are best friends, but complete opposites! Violet is a dark, mysterious, chic girl who is into film, while Claire is a naive, glittery cute fairy chick. Anyways, to make a long story short, their friendship is nearly torn apart by changes in their lifestyles, but the happy ending is comforting. Go out and buy this novel if you are looking for a poetic, modern, magical experience!!

Summary: Excrutiatingly beautiful

Summary: Entrancing
Review: Francesca Lia Block has a style that is wonderfully unique and refreshing. I'm a 17 year old male and I hope that students of the future read her books and learn that being different is good and should be embraced.

This was the first book that I read of hers, and now I'm like fan for life. The story she focuses on here is a great yarn about friendship, and finding yourself. Buy the thing. Do it. You know you want to.

Summary: Breathtaking
Review: I started reading this book at the beginning of a school day. Big mistake, I was barely able to stop myself reading it during classes, and was reprimanded more than once after being caught stowing it under textbooks.

Block's imagry is amazing as usual, this book, as with her others, reads like poetry. The relationship between the girls seems very complex, and the split between their narratives gave each a change to tell their side of the story. Brilliant and beautiful writing, indeed. I'd recomend the book to just about anyone.

Summary: My favorite FLB book
Review: Francesca Lia Block is famous for writing original novels, bringing fairies and enchantment to Los Angeles. This book about friendship and the corruption of Hollywood was amazing. The innocent claire, the cynic Violet, these two polar opposites made great friends. ANy girl who has ever had a best friend like this should read this book.
