Rating: Summary: Strangely beautiful Review: Although I identify with Claire (who loves Faeries and poetry), I found vicious Violet fascinating as well. I enjoyed Violet's biting, hilarious sarcasm -- very different from the sweetness & light in the "Weetzie" books. I admire the fact that Block can write the most sparkly, shimmering, irridescent poetry-type books, and also write in-your-face not-prettied-up truth about teenagers. We need both!
Rating: Summary: Francesca Lia Block scores again! Review: As a teen girl, there are few writers who write for teen girls with out degrading them or playing us for an easy audiance. Francesca Lia Block writes in a way that makes you never want to go back to the real world. Her other books are wonderful as well. Violet and Clare are both parts of every girl, just some are more Violet and some are more Clare. Some are Dark and dramatic and don't show off their creative shy side, and others are just the opposite. But which ever way you are Ms. Block writes so true and clear it almost makes you cry.
Rating: Summary: Beautifully descriptive Review: This awesome piece of literature can frankly express a teenage life. Ms.Block is a wonderful writer and poet. This book of two girls on a journey through life was of the heartbearing sort. All I have left to say, is thank you Ms.Block on behalf of America's teenage girls.
Rating: Summary: My Favorite Book! Review: I love all of Francesca Lia Block's work and Dangerous Angels (read it) was my old fave but this book shocked me with its truth and beauty. Read it!
Rating: Summary: Insipid Characters & a Boring Story Line Review: Since I primarily review nonfiction for magazines and newspapers, I always look forward to the fiction review copies I am sent for a change of pace. My enthusiasm quickly turned to disappointment with Violet & Claire. The characters are dreadful. They lead such shallow lives, the reader could care less about their what happens to them. And there are no positive role models in this book for children (yes, according to the publicist's letter the book came out of the Children's Books division). Boring and lacking in any positive values -- what a dreadful combo.I sensed that the author merely wrote down a stream of consciousness (well maybe "stream" is an exaggeration, it was more akin to a small flow of water along a gutter). She just typed up what came to her and submitted it. How could Joanna Cotler and any other editors involved in the acquisition of this book find it worth publishing? What was the hook, who was the target market? Violet and Claire are uninteresting, and everyone else they encounter in L.A. just as insipid. Now why I am not submitting a review of this book to any of the magazines and newspapers I write for? Because I couldn't write 1,000 words on a book that has no substance to critique. There is nothing to grab onto -- the book is vacuous. I suppose I could say it represents the dreadful state of publishing in the US, but I have already written such in several columns. And I couldn't even bring myself to read the last 39 pages. Yes, I made it through 130 pages, but knew that if I wasted my time reading the last 39 I would be really mad!! Before I would make a child read this, I would recommend she or he watch paint drying.
Rating: Summary: yet another mouth-watering story by fancesca Review: i'm 27 and have read all of francesca lia block's books including both of her out of print ones. her books flow. they speak to me. they make my toes tingle. i can't ever seem to get enough. she feeds the fantasy in all of out heads. she has such a wonderful way with words. *true* she can get a little too oozie-woozie with the gaga descriptions but it's just her style. in her latest... violet & claire, i loved her description of the two girls wanting to someday live in the desert and catch shooting stars in their mouths. too cool that girl. very easy read. read this on in about 5 hours.
Rating: Summary: Not exactly on the Block Review: Over all this is a great story, although one cant help but get the feeling that she lost interest at some point in this book, not unlike one of the main characters, and wrapped it up quickly and in some ways let it fall short of what I feel the story could have achieved. On the whole this story is slightly darker then her former works, though it still drives home a nice point about love and friendship. if you're already at Weetzie kid I recommend it, however if you're just getting into Block's writing I recommend starting with something else.
Rating: Summary: Different but good Review: This book was different than other of Block's works. It delt more with real life than with fantasy. It gave me a sense of reality and I could relate to Violet and Claire's relationship to the one I have with my best friend. It was a very good book and hard to put down. If you have a best friend than this book is for you. It was great!
Rating: Summary: not her best work Review: overall, i liked it. but i was semi-disappointed. it started out good enough (even though violet wasn't the greatest of people) but then came the ending. it felt rushed to me, like she got bored with writing it and decided to sum it up in as fast as possible. i recommend you buy this ONLY if you are a fan of hers. if you are just starting to read her stuff, don't start with this book. i suggest you start with 'weetzie bat' or 'the hanged man'.
Rating: Summary: a different type of block Review: While this book admittadly isn't as good as the Dangerous Angels stories, it is still pretty awesome. This is a different book from any others of Francesca Lia Block's that I've read, but her writing still contains the magic and beauty that are in her other stories.
