Summary: An exciting, down-to-earth book!
Review: Kudos for Dale Seymour Publications for their Rivers: Earth Science book, part of the Rivers Curriculum Project. The introduction is great reading on its own and the web site located there is a treasure trove of support. The nine lessons in this great book are based on a well-sequenced hierarchy of skills that culminates in a study that brings it all together for rumination and action. Included in the chapters are neat marginal entries called 'Driftwood', information and anecdotes that are mini-lessons in themselves. The reading level seems to be slightly above those of a newspaper but technically oriented in a delightful way. The math, as it progresses, is informative, interest-generating, and presents itself as a realworld application with satisfying, digestible results! There are many charts, diagrams, and support graphics that make this book highly modifiable. I would suggest this series be utilized in the upper middle to high school science classroom. This is altogether a very readable, motivating earth science teaching tool. Blue ribbons to its authors!
