Rating: Summary: NL-S approved book Review: Lurlene McDaniel's book, Six Months to Live, is one of the best books I have ever read about dealing with the diagnosis of leukemia. McDaniel did a wonderful job expressing the feelings of the main character, Dawn Rochelle. It was easy for me to relate to Dawn because she is in my age group. She was diagnosed with cancer when she was 13. The setting is in a rural area. The overall writing was easy to read and made you feel like you were a part of Dawn's life. She was a strong willed person who was not going to give into her disease. The plot of the book is about teenage girl fighting for her life through an irreversible disease. Dawn went through tough times and eventually was dismissed from the hospital. In the summer, Dawn went to a cancer camp. Kids with all types of cancer attended the camp and had two-weeks of games and fun. The camp helped her forget her problems and have a good time. The camp interested me because the writer made it sound so beautiful and perfect. The main lesson of Six Months to Live is that in order to overcome hard times, you need to work hard and have faith in yourself. Dawn was not willing to give into her problems and give up in the fight for life. I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a good source of inspiration.
Rating: Summary: "Dawn Rochelle-Four Novels", by Lurlene McDaniel Review: I found this novel extremely interesting to read, and hard to put down. It's a book that centers its focus on a teen and her battles with cancer, which is refreshing since there aren't too many of those written anymore. The main character,Dawn, is a thirteen yea old girl who was diagnosed, several times at that, with acute lymphocytic leukemia. The news devastates Dawn and allows her to feel like an out-cast amongst the other children her age. Dawn realizes she can no longer take life for granted, and that every living, breathing moment could be her last. Her sense of fear is so vivid, that the reader itself could feel her emotions and try to relate.Dawn finds comfort when she meets a fellow teenager that shares the same ailment as her, Sandy. Dawn and Sandy come to be very close and understand each other more than anyone else can.Tehy even attend a camp for cancer patients together. They both eventually go into remission together. However, Sandy receive news that her cancer has come back, but this time, Sandy doesn't make it.In my opinion without Sandy, Dawn's already difficult life became harder. To make matters worse, Dawn's cancer resurfaces also after her brother's,Rob, wedding. It was then that Dawn decided to live her life to the fullest and make the best out of her situation. She attents school like other normal teens and goes to dance and even takes up drivers ed.She even finds love. She meets an incredible guy named Jake, and she's hesitant at first because she's always aware of the fact that her cancer may make itself part of her life again. She realizes there's so much to life than being overwhelmed by a disease and learns to appreciate Jake. Her whole journey throughout the book inspires readers and touches hearts, as Dawn realizes the value of life and love, with the help of Jake of course. I give the book the whole five stars because i found it inspirational for all teenagers with problems, and it gives hope to readers that you can overcome many obstacles. I really enjoyed this book and i recommend it to anyone with a soft heart.
Rating: Summary: Letter to the Author Review: Dear Lurlene McDaniel, You have been writing inspirational novels about young teenagers facing life-altering situations. All your novels are hard-hitting and realistic, but also leaves readers like me with inspiraton and hope. One of your books that I've read is called, Six Months to Live. I enjoyed that book very much. The reason that I enjoyed this book is because you wrote the book in such a way that it influenced me to read and not stop. From your book I understood that the main character Dawn, who was thirteen had leukemia and she didn't have much time to survive from this illness. When Dawn goes to the childerns hospital a girl name Sandy who was going to be her room-mate had cancer too. They both suffered together to fight the cancer by giving each other hope. When they became friends and after they each had to go back to their town Dawn recived a letter from Sandy's parents saying, "We lost our beloved Sandy yesterday, 10 A.M. She died peacefully-no pain. We are flying her home to West Virginia for burial. Package for Dawn to follow. The Chandles." That was the most sad letter and it really influnced me to read the book to see if Sany is really death or alive. I just loved your book and it was all based on a real life situation. Sincerely, Mariam Semerdzhyan

Rating: Summary: Predictable, but still good Review: I loved "Six Months to Live" because it's a very well written, sad book for teens. In the book Dawn Rochelle (13) is diagnosed with lukemia. She endures chemotherapy with a 13 year old girl (Sandy) that rooms with her in the hospital. When they are both in remission, they go to a camp for kids suffering cancer, and meet even more friends that have cancer. After camp, one of the friends relapses. "Six Months to Live" is a very sad book, most definately the best Lurlene McDaniel book.
