Summary: Downriver
Review: This book Downriver is about sevreal kids that go white water river rafting in the Grand Canyon. They do not have a permit, and there are no adults, and they do not have a map to show where they are going rafting at. One of the Characters named Al is not that nice in my opnion he thinks he is the ruler of everybody else and which he kind of is in a way, but he thinks all of the desions are up to him. In other words Star is the different one of the pack. Well later on in the boook they run in to many problems. One of the problems is when they go down a waterfall and they see many bumbs and rocks that they might run it to. And what do ya know they run in to a bump (rock) and they get bucked around and soon they figured out that they better watch where they are going.Downriver is an exciting and illuminating book. Summary: Differences, like Mother Nature, are Rough AND Beautiful
Review: Downriver by Will Hobbs reviewed by Maia Hazelwood

Will Hobbs has created an exquisitely plotted, nail-biting experience that has great morals and teaches about the values of friendship and family. The characters learn that nature brings people together and can change a person's outlook on life. The main character, Jessie, and her friends are at a summer camp for troubled kids that they call "Hoods in the Woods." At the beginning of the book, all of their lives are going down river. As they are plunged into the great adventure of rafting down the rough Colorado River, the characters' personalities and the conflicts between them come out. Troy is stunning but turns out to be selfish and narcissistic. Star is weak and fragile but transforms into a self-confident person. There are other characters too, each one very different. This really brings the story to life. You get this overwhelming feeling when you read this book, a feeling of how good life is if you can look at it in a certain way. You can feel the everlasting friendships that the characters form. You feel the tension as they fight for their lives against nature's forces. You know that with every catastrophe they face and overcome, they are only closer to the ultimate win that comes at the end. It is a phenomenal book. I can say that I have found a respect not as much for nature, but for people. It has increased my awareness of how wonderfully different we are. The book twists into a novel about the love and friendships people can make when you get past your differences. I do have an attitude towards Mother Nature that she can be rough and beautiful. If you want to get all you can out of her, you have to experience them both.

Summary: Juvenile Delinquents in the Grand Canyon
Review: The book "Downriver" was about a group of juvenile delinquents cruising down the Grand Canyon with out a river map and using gear stolen from their leader Al of Discovery Unlimited. This was not the trip that their parents intended them to go on. They abandoned Al and went off by themselves to face the Grand Canyon. The author, Will Hobbs wrote this book with many cilffhangers so that you just didn't want to put the book down. As they flee downriver they encounter many obstacles that they must overcome. Some of the larger obstacles were deadly scorpions, bone crushing rapids and jagged, piercing rocks. Will they make it or will they become another victim of the Grand Canyon?

Whitewater rafting without a map and not even knowing what's in front of them, they all experience something that they'll never forget. She also learns to stand up for herself and not let anyone tell her what to do. While Jessie was on the trip her attitude changed towards her father and her stepmother and she also felt better about herself.

Summary: Dowriver
Review: The main character in this story is fifteen year old Jessie, who is sent to an outdoor program for teenagers in trouble. There are seven others in the program, each for various reasons. Before a rafting trip down the San Juan River in Colorado, the decide to steal the equipment and recklessly run the Grand Canyon by themeselves.

As Jessie and the others overcome the challenges of the Grand Canyon, they become a team, and more importantly, good friends. One person in particular, whose name is Try, emerges as the leader. Although Jessie admires Troy, there are several times when his decisions put others in danger and he frightens the rest of the team.

This was another of Will Hobbs' great adventure books. I loved it.

Summary: "Downriver" IS the Quintessential Can't-Put-it-Down Novel
Review: Will Hobbs is known for his great, suspenseful stories about teenage kids in dangerous situations. Of the ones I have read, this is the best. The plot made simple is: Jessie and her new friends, Pug, Adam, Rita, Heather, Star, Freddy, and Troy, ditch the outdoor education program they've been enrolled in, Discovery Unlimited. They embark on a journey through the Grand Canyon on rafts in the Colorado River. Every character is clearly defined: For instance, Troy is the bravest because he's the leader. Freddy is the one with the most survival instincts. Rita is the loudest and most outgoing. Heather is the shy, quiet one who isn't in the story for very long because she decides not to go with them. And Star is very spiritual, becoming Jessie's closest friend of all of them and giving her a bracelet that is her "soul color." The whole book is just generally very exciting and action-packed. At one point Freddy has to stitch Rita's head from a collision with a rock. And at the end, the friends all split up, except that Star stays with Jessie, her dad, and his new wife, Madeline. But I don't want to give away too much. I hope this was helpful, and I highly recommend this book!
