Summary: Down River
Review: Down River
Will Hobbs

Down River is a story that will always stick in the back of my mind. Jessie who was a trouble maker ever since her mother died, and her father was seeing another woman. Jessie for her misbehavior was sent to camp along with 7 other teenagers.

On the adventure they have to make several decsions, some life taking. For instance Jessie and the others had to climb a rock wall. Jessie who never climbed before and isn't in the best shape has a terrible experience. Jessie who was second to climb the cliff was following one of the men in the group. He was able to get through fine, but Jessie nearly dies. Holding on for what seemed to be an hour was a few seconds but life threating.

After that the crew moved on, deciding to go on a river ride. If knowing what was in sight for them, they would never have went. Nothing goes right for them. All they could do is hope to get out alive.

Will hobbs did a nice job writing this book. Making things suspenceful and adventurous. i would recomend this book to younger people who like the outdoors and ho is adventurous.

Summary: Downriver
Review: The book that I am doing my review on is Down River by Will Hobbs.

It was written about a bunch of kids who are in trouble. They go to a summer camp to keep them out of trouble and to help them. But they end up getting in more trouble than they could ever imagine.
The camp they are at is in the wilderness. Their nickname for the camp is "Hoods in the Woods". This camp is in Colorado and they are to learn how to float the rapids of the Grand Canyon. After a long, unbearable hike to camp they ditch the camp director, Al after seeing how badly he reacted when he saw Jessie almost fall off a cliff. So now they're going down the river without Al but with his boats and gear and they're ready for the time of their lives. Later on they find troubles like power struggles over leadership and arguments over which paths to take. Some of these lead to fights.
Some of the dangers on the river are getting trapped under a flipped boat, getting stung by a scorpion, almost drowning in a whirlpool, and going down dangerous rapids without an experienced guide. Through the struggles and danger they learn who their real friends are and do some growing along the way. I rate this book a 7 because it had a lot to do with the outdoors, a lot of action and a good ending.

Summary: Great Book-Downriver by Will Hobbs
Review: Will Hobbs put alot of great detail into this book. Jessie, the main character, was sent by her father and Madeline to an outdoor ed program the kids called "Hoods in the woods." When they get tired of listening to what their leader, Al, says, they decide to ditch him and steal the car and supplies and escape to the Grand Canyon. Before they start rafting, they realize Heather is gone. Then they start the whitewater rafting, and they also begin to bond as a group. At one point, Rite gets hurt in the cave and there is no way to get help, so Freddy sews the stitches into her head. She ends up being ok though. Read the book to find out what else happens!

Summary: Downriver Offers an Unforgettable Adventure
Review: Will Hobbs' Downriver combines feelings of helplessness and hope, producing a frenzy of adrenaline that will hold your attention from beginning to end. Seven inexperienced rafters find themselves tackling the Grand Canyon after having abandoned the companionship of Al, the direction of Discovery Unlimited, an outdoor education school which is designed to test your strength. The balance of personalities found in the characters is perfectly crafted. Adam, a jokester through and through, provided the light-hearted balance necessary when dealing with such a life threatening situation as whitewater in the Grand Canyon.

Downriver has many messages to offer its reader; messages which usually set you up for a challenge and urge you to stretch your limitations. The characters found here, most notably Troy, the seemingly unstoppable leader, continue to press on regardless of their weaknesses which spell out defeat. It's as if the author uses his text as a transit system, transporting you from your known reality into a separate reality of self dependence, and testing your ability as an individual. You can't help but examine your strength and weaknesses while surfing through the pages of this book.

Another theme found in Downriver is one of reliance. As much as we need to rely on ourselves, we also must embrace the love and support offered by those we are closest to in life. The seven kids on this whitewater journey come from different walks of life. Some have homes to return to, while others are not so fortunate. However, in the end, a common belief overshadows these differences and places each individual on a shared level. This is the belief that those friendships which developed among themselves are stronger than any stretch of the Grand Canyon.

Downriver invites you into the heart of the Grand Canyon. Accept the challenge of Downriver, and you will emerge a reader of greater experience. Here is a book that tosses you into the clenches of nature like no other.

Summary: The Ride of Your Life
Review: Set in Colorado in the 1990's,Will Hobbs novel Downriver is a story of teenagers who go on an adventure of a lifetime rafting the rapids of the Colorado River rebelling against authority. The main character,Jessie, is a teenage girl who is having problems with her step mom, so she gets sent to a special camp in an attempt to straighten her out. There she meet other teenagers with similar problems eho were sent there by their parents. The camp canselor,Al,is a jerk in the eyes of Jessie. For example, the group was climbing Storm King Peak and Al let Troy lwad them up the wrong side of the mountain witch was a tougher climb. This almost got Jessie killed. There was a sign that said "Warning: Stormy King Peak is infamous for its extreme weather, exposure, and rotten rock. Three have died here. Think before you add your name to the list". Al just igrored the sign and when Jessie almost died he diden't say anything, not even sorry. The gang of eight, four boys and four girls, quikly developed a taste foor Whitewater rafting. They wat to go down the Colorado River and through the Grand Cannyon, but Al says that it is illegal this time of year and that it would be too advanced for them. So they decided to steal the camp van and head for the Colorado River. This was the beginning of a ride of a life time. Throughout the trip, almost everyone finds out who they really are and what they are worth. They learn more about themselfs and about life then they have ever before. This novel "downriver",by Will Hobbs is an action-packed book. If you like action I suggest that you read this.

Summary: Class Loved It!
Review: My class of sophomore high school students read Downriver as a class and loved it. Their raves were directed primarily toward the characters. They thought that Hobbs' choice of Jessie as the first person narrator helped them to relate both to the conflicts in action and the characterizations. Action, believable characters, and conflict were the highlights for these students. I would highly recommend this novel for reluctant readers.
