Rating: Summary: Powerful testament of loneliness Review: What can a person say after reading a book like this? I identified with Marina so much. I keep a diary, don't talk much either(although more than her),used to be an outcast, and have never felt pretty. However,I'm not disfigured as she was. Now I'm grateful to be average-looking. She couldn't talk after a tragedy scarred her for life,so the journal became her only voice. Despite what he did to Marina, her father was the only relative she loved and wanted to see. She opened up a little to roommates and her English teacher. So much of it is touching and packs an emotional punch, especially the end. The only flaw in the whole book occasional vagueness. To anyone who's ever felt isolated,I give you advice: order this book right now! Mr. Marsden, please write a sequel! We're dying to know what will happen to Marina now!
Rating: Summary: Worth more than 5 stars Review: This is an absolute must read. I'm not the type who usually read this kind of book but I was so stuck into it. I really felt for Marina. It was so touched and one would understand very well how being handicapped it's like. I think this really reflects how a person feels when they are so horribly lonely and was handicapped. I definitely recommend this book to everyone.
Rating: Summary: a wonderfull book Review: marsden often writes as a teenage girl, and does such a good job i constantly have to remind myself that the author is a man. this book leaves you thinking that perhaps your life isnt so bad after all, and realising that there are people who have problems, and sometimes they come out of there shell, and sometimes not. i think that this book is great, havnt read the sequel but i bet it will be just as good. read the book at all costs, and just think about it.
Rating: Summary: Emotional and moving story Review: This book is great. It shows the emotional feeling of a person if they have a physical or mental dissorder. It shows you can make it through tough times. Her friend was her diary. I recommend it for secondary school students(12-18 year old).
Rating: Summary: One of the best books I`ve ever read! Review: This book is the diary of a young Australian girl called Marina. Her face is disfigured and she refuses to speak. In her diary she tells the reader about a terrible trauma and about her way back to life. She makes friends with a girl at her boarding school and with her English teacher. I think this book is very, very good, although the Swedish translation is rather bad.
Rating: Summary: A good book to introduce the idea of journals Review: A testimony to the power of silent writing. A teenage girl is tragically disfigured when her parents breakup and loses the ability to speak. An empowering journey of the road to recovery through her journal writing at a private girls school.
Rating: Summary: It was so touching***** Review: This book was the first Australian book I have ever read in my life. I was a college student majoring in English literature & language when I was fascinated with this book. (Yes, I am a Korean and we don't get to read English books here. We are getting some translated books though.) One day, a Japanese friend of mine who used live & studied here suggested that he should lend me a touching Australian novel when I told him that I was bored with old classical British novels/poems I had to read in college. I was rather curious to read & know about the novel published in Austalia where I had never been to. (Later, I travelled in Australia for 2 months and bought some children's books.) In college, we didn't learn about Australian literature, so I was rather proud of myself as I would be the first one in the department who read Australian English book. Anyway, I had to agree with my friend about his opinions on the book. The book was so touching. I had to cry when Marina was crying hugging the English teacher's daughter hard. She didn't say a word (but only cried). Still I felt like the character, Marina was telling me how she felt about things around her and how much she was lonely etc by hugging the babygirl and crying all of sudden. What I learned from the book is 'silence can tell us many things' like the author himself said in the book. I really love this book and sincerely thank the author who has made me get interested in children's literature.
Rating: Summary: i think that if you are looking for a good book read this Review: i thought this was a really good book i thought it taught a lesson and i am so grateful to read this book that i have got all of his books so if you like reading and even if you dont read this

Rating: Summary: FANTASTIC!!!!!!!! Review: This is the most fantastic book I've read. The girl Marina has a disfigured face and it is her jornal of her most personal thoughts. I had to read this for school and it was the best class I had.
