Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: History made interesting! Review: As an 8th grade US History teacher, I find this book a great way to teach about both an individual and a time period. This biography is well-researched and makes learning about slavery and the revolutionary war a great addition to the history textbook. Phillis Wheatley endures great pain in her young life first being sold as a slave and then spending most of her life proving herself - simply because she is black. At first her goal is to please Nathanial Wheatley who she adores, but later she comes to terms with learning about herself and where she fits in a world where being black affords very few opportunities. Along with a book of Phillis Wheatley's poems, this is a wonderful book to use in a US History classroom from a variety of perspectives - the slavery issue, African American history, and women's studies.

Though she is a slave she as seen as a clever girl almost right away and raised as almost a daughter to her family and when they find she can write poems her worth becomes greater still. This story will satisfy you if you like romance and historical fiction or if you like to see your favorite characters grow-up. Girls will probably like this book more than guy's though. Ann Rinaldi's fans will not be disappointed with this work although it is not her best. I enjoyed how Ann Rinaldi worked from the facts a story of Phillis's life that will not disappoint. Overall I recomend this book if you like Ann Rinaldi's other works or like historical fiction.

Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Great Book Review: I have been a fan of Ann Rinaldi's books for many years now. Recently in school I had to do a repeort on Phillis Wheatley the first African-American ever to be published. When I found out about this books existance I was overjoyed. I imediatley drove over to my nearest bookstore. I started reading the book on the car ride home and couldn't put it down. The book really talks about how Phillis feels and the struggles she faces while adding romance too. It is factual enough that it helped me with my repoert but fictionalized enough that I loved reading it. I highly reccomend this book.

Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: This book took my breath away! Review: I loved this book more than any other Historical fiction novel that I've ever read! It is the story of a young black girl who is kidnapped from her home in Africa, and taken on a slave ship to Boston Mass.{They give you a detailed account of how she was caught and her journey} Soon after, she is taken in by the Wheatley family, and treated as a daughter, not a slave. Nathanial, John Wheately's son, teaches her to read and write. The Wheately's soon realize, that she has a great talent for writing poetry! So, they take her to England to have it published.{because she is black and a woman, they won't publish her work in America}. Once in England, Benjamin Franklin tells her that now that she is in England, she is free! So, the question is, will she betray the family that has treated her so well? Or will she take her long wanted freedom?
