Rating: Summary: Skin a Review Review:
From a man that swallowed a diamond, to a man jumping off a ship hundreds of feet into the water. Roald Dahl has made a collocation of short horror stories that will keep you wanting to get to the last page.
The book is a horror that isn't that horrific. It is the kind of book that makes you think what will happen.
He made a book that is both puzzling and mysterious. Roald made stories that will scare the pants off you. One that I think made me guess what would happen next.
Anyone that is not afraid to get a little scared should try to read this book. It is short, and easy the read. I would say that manly teens should read, it is aimed more at them.
Rating: Summary: Why Do You All Think This is a Kids' Book? Review: Dahl wrote for children as well as for grown-ups. Stop freaking out because this book isn't Charlie & the Chocolate Factory. It's excellent.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful book - but is it really young adult? Review: I absolutely love this book. Roald Dahl is a gripping and suspenseful writer who manages to captivate the reader with a limited amount of gore. The only thing is that this book is listed as young adult, which is probably decided by the publisher, but the subject matter is pretty strong, so parents might want to read it themselves first before giving to their children! I would say 15 or older would enjoy the book, but 11-14 depends on the child.
Rating: Summary: Younger readers? Go for it!! Review: I absolutely LOVED Skin and The Umbrella Man. EVERY story in thir was FANTASTICAL and I really want to find more of Roald Dahl's writing like this (I have read all of his books that are specifically for children) There has been some controversy in other reviews that some of the elments in these are not quite fitting for a younger audience, but this is the equivilent of Harry Potter with a touch of lemon juice. If your kid loved HP, or some of Roald Dahl's other works, or just has a liking for the unusual and the uncanny, this would be one of my first choices for them.I do not wish to reveal my age.
Rating: Summary: Wonka's dark side is just as great! Review: I always imagined Roald Dahl fashioned Willy Wonka on himself -- but then I read this book and saw he is equally gifted in weaving dark horrifying tales as well as the whimsical fantastic children's books for which he is famous. SKIN runs the gamut with strange tales about ordinary people --- the man who had his friend tattoo a picture of his wife on his back to find out, years later, it is worth a fortune; the 60-something man who runs into his childhood tormentor on the commuter rail, etc etc. All situations that COULD happen to you or someone you know .. thus making them all the more real and scary.
Rating: Summary: Great Side of Dahl Review: I had only read a few books by Roald Dahl before, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda and James and the Giant Peach. I enjoyed them all very much, but they were all happy go lucky. But these darker stories are captivating and I really enjoyed the twist endings. I also love the way Dahl writes, keeping you glued to the story. The book is made even better by the way you can metaphorically relate to the stories. I absolutely loved this collection of short stories. I discovered a great new side of Roald Dahl and I'll have to read more of his similar works.
Rating: Summary: NOT WHAT I EXPECTED Review: I purchased this book in the belief that these stories would acually be macabre; instead they are only darkly humorous if even that. But this is Dahl, so my expectations were lowered from the beggining-although "Beware of Dog" was good. A particualary weak hearted reviewer gave this book one star because it was "horrifying" -heh heh heh. If one can't take this, I'd advise not to buy horror movies or you'll suffer a heart failure. The truth is cruel.
Rating: Summary: Skin! Review: I really liked the stories in this book, they are very clever, but a bit dark. All my friends want to read it. -From a 13-year-old girl
Rating: Summary: Even number of hits and misses Review: My only disappointment with this book was that I wanted all of them to have the same sort of devlish endings that the title story and "Lamb to the Slaughter" have. All of the stories are engrossing and entertaining, but to think they're all going to end with a twisted punch is misleading. I also wonder how involving the stories would be for a young adult audience who have been raised on "Harry Potter" and "Goosebumps". A few of the stories would probably have to be explained to a younger reader.
Rating: Summary: Skin! Review: Raold Dahl's short stories are each little masterpieces. This collection has stories - each of a completely different subject and nature - but each of the fantastic quality to stand on its own. In "the surgeon" a man is rewarded for his good nature, then his good fortune seems to reverse - and in the end, justice is served. In "skin", Dahl critiques the materialistic nature of the art world... in a purely sick way! =) In "my lady love, my dove", dahl shows a twist - the character's find out something unexpected - but then he shocks you again by their unexpected reaction. "Skin" shows Dahl's ability to write for all ages... this is an adult collection of short stories, that makes an adult chuckle.
