Summary: Well worth reading
Review: I couldn't put this book down and ended up reading it in one sitting! Lieutenant Osborn showed such bravery and skill that he truly deserves the title of National Hero. What an incredible story of courage. I highly recommend this book!

Summary: Very Enlightening
Review: I found this book very enlightening. I am an Air Force brat, female, and never really studied the life of a pilot. This book made me think about all my father went through to become a pilot, even though that's not what he made his career as... I was fortunate enough to meet Shane's good friend Eric while vacationing in WA. over New Years, and can tell you, if the book makes you think he's a wonderful person, his friends make you think even more so.

God Bless America, and the men and women like Shane and my father who protect it.

Summary: Born to Fly
Review: I found this to be an extremely readable book. As a former Naval Aviator myself, I thought the description of life on board the aircraft was particularly good, especially in light of the fact that a lot of people who do not understand the environment would be reading this book.

Some people will be put off by the heavy emphasis on his personal experience but must realise that he was not with his crew a large portion of the time.

His description of conditions during the crew's captivity are well done without being either condescending or accusatory. Sometimes the writing is as if you were viewing this as a movie.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in current events.

Summary: Great Nation/Great Book
Review: I rarely bought any books in the past decade, but when I heard about Shane's great new book, I rushed to the bookstore as soon as I could. What a cute cover photo! I got a tingling sensation up my spine as I turned the pages. His book illustrated to our ungrateful neighbors what a great American hero's all about---brave, smart, strong, and cute. Even his story might be just a tiny bit one-sided, but do you really want to hear about the other side of the story? Plus, the other pilot is dead. All in all, great people from the greatest nation read great books by great heros. Highly recommended!

Summary: Proud To Say I've Met The Author
Review: I would have bought this book regardless of who wrote it. I am a huge fan of our nations military and of those who serve.

I felt "out of the loop" for not following this story when it broke last spring, and wanted to learn more about it. At the time, I didn't even know Shane was the pilot involved...It wasn't until I saw the bookcover photo & title, that I made the connection. I was walking through a local bookstore one day, saw the cover -- and said to myself "Hey! That looks like Shane (no relation to Cornhuskers Coach Tom) Osborn." Intrigued, I picked it up, lo and behold, it was Shane! I got two blessings in one: a deeper connection to someone I know, and an insiders look at an international story.

I met Shane Osborn in 1996/7, while he was in flight school in Corpus Christi, TX. What an amazing individual. He truly defined the meaning officer and gentleman - with the bonus of a wonderful sense of humor. I knew a little of his life story, before getting & reading this book, and now that I've done so, I'm even more awed by him.

His character as an American naval officer shines through, his character as a proud American son shines even brighter. I don't know how I would have held up under the stresses Shane and his crew were put through...But their example gives me a new strength & more courage to get through the stresses that civilian life throws my way.

I found this book to be inspiring and patriotic. I've read it 3 times now, and plan to read it again & again. This young man has done so much, and overcome so many obstacles in his (short)life...it makes me feel guilty -- I am a Desert Storm veteran, I've had my fair share of obstacles to zig-zag through, I do charitable volunteer work; but it doesn't seem like enough by comparison. Everytime I re-read this book, I want to go out and find something new to do, something greater and more challenging than before.

If you enjoy: biographies, inspirational stories, military history or avaition, this is the book for you! But, don't take my word for it -- please read it and learn the truth for yourself!

Summary: Magical
Review: In just days, my local Barnes & Noble nearly sold out its floor display of Born to Fly. While I rarely went beyond reading romance books, I loved this book. This book's foundation in reality, not fantasy, didn't diminish its magical literary power. It's much more interesting than Mark Twain.

Pilot-turned-Author Mr. Osborne, who's as handsome as Tom Cruise in Top Gun, reminds us that our world's exploding with danger. The description of his experience is intense. This book will lead to a whole generation of young Americans discovering the world outside of our continent.

Summary: Self-indulging propaganda
Review: Instead of being portrayed as a hero, Shane Osburn should be brought up on charges of having endangered the lives of his crew and turning over classified machinery to the Chinese. The book belongs in the 99 cent store.

Summary: Honor, Character and Courage
Review: Lt. Osborn describes his experience when his navy reconnaissance plane is struck by a Chinese fighter aircraft forcing Osborn to land his crippled plane in China. For eleven days the world watched as the Chinese asked the U.S. for an apology. This is the story from Lt. Osborn's view as he describes those eleven days in Chinese "captivity" with his crew of 23 officers and airmen. It's a fascinating story of the making of a naval aviator who is ultimately awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his courage and leadership during the ordeal. This is a story about the people who usually don't get a lot of publicity which makes you realize there is more to naval aviation than fighter pilots and aircraft carriers. In the end it's a timely story of standing up to adversity with honor, character and courage. Highly recommended.

Summary: "A REAL TOP GUN"
Review: Lt. Shane Osborn, is a real Top Gun, a Navy Pilot with all the right stuff!
He has shown us the view from the other side with his eyes in this well written book, a biography and memoir, of the situation that he and his crew lived through, that many of us never imagined could happen inside an EP-3 plane. Then to carry on tremendous courage while held against their wills. Lt Osborn and the crew kept up their determination to stick together through it all.
Plus, his early training and background helped him to overcome so many hurdles, obstacles and closed doors in which he has proven, that by working hard, you can succeed in whatever you put your mind to. This will become a classic Naval Aviator book. The book is enlightening rich with a historic look into the situation firsthand. I rate this a five star general!

Summary: Reminded Me of Behind Enemy Lines
Review: Shame Osborne's Born To Fly is a dramatic account of his "heroic" landing on China after the incident which killed his rival Chinese pilot. Books of this kind are making big bucks in the US ever since the 911. Osborne captured the right time to get the best of his spyplane clash. One gets a feeling of potential for yet another Great-America Hollywood flick. This book reminded me of the movie Behind Enemy Lines and came at a time when Chinese president's aircraft was found being planted with American satellite-operated spying devices during its modification in Texas. I don't know how a country could make so many enemies. I don't know how many people in Asia see Osborne as a hero. But neither is of America's concern, for sure.
