Rating: Summary: A Lyrical and Haunting Masterpiece Review: I don't want to give away too much of the plot, because to do so would ruin the experience of reading this book. The plot is revealed a little bit at a time, leaving the reader hanging and just a touch confused for most of the book. But this is a good thing, as it gives you the feeling of being in the mixed up minds of the characters. The writing style was very experimental. Many times the syntax, punctuation and word choice made it seemed more like poetry than prose. The word choice and imagery is painfully beautiful. Given all of this, I do not consider this book 'light reading'. The writing and structure are experimental, but that to me was part of the beauty. If you are looking for something beautiful, something that will make you think, and haunt you for days afterwards, you may like this book. Personally, when I finished the last page I had to take a deep breath. This book made me feel briefly as Dickinson once said: "...as if the top of my had had been taken off." I don't think I can give a book higher praise than that.
Rating: Summary: Interesting.. Review: I didn't want to read the book at first, but when I was bored, I decided to read it.And I got hooked. What's really interesting about the story is that it shows the point of view of other characters. In the beginning, everything is so cryptic, and it's like you're unlocking a mystery, because you don't know what's the matter, or what really is the plot of the book. Then as you go to the end of the book, everything somehow becomes *connected*. Even after you read the book, you still are trying to connect the pieces of the puzzle.. So, the book, was interesting..
Rating: Summary: Both Entertaining and Moving Review: The plot of this book is somewhat different from most novels, which gives it a tone of originality. The setting is a vacationbeach. The story is told from three pertinent viewpoints; three different characters, each with deep troubles. Evan, one of these characters, is a fourteen year old boy vacationing with his sister and parents. He privately names Margaret, another main character, "The Watcher," because she constantly, eerily observes his family. Margaret is a bony girl with loose, dirty brown hair; Evan's mother sees as her as a "Broken Seashell." Chris, a lifeguard on the beach, tells his own sardonic story. His is slightly adjacent to the main plot, yet Chris is clearly a significant character. The three different narratives give the reader contrasting angles of the events. The characters have almost no connection to one another; they have nothing in common, they never converse. Yet, by the end of the book, the author, oddly enough, has drawn them together. Each character has a loss, a sadness; a deep link to one another. And finally, within the last memorable scene of the book, they are drawn together in a haunting attempt to heal their wounds. I found this book to be poignant and moving. By each of the characters, the novel is told with a deep sense of pain. The description is stunning; the characters are developed and real to the reader. The author boldly explores genuine human emotions with a haunting sense of realism. The novel stayed with me long after the last page had been turned. The Watcher is an unforgettable novel that has a justified and deserved spot on every teen's bookshelf.
Rating: Summary: Wonderfully psycological--really makes you think. Review: I loved this book. I found it compelling, stunning, and surprising. "The Watcher" is a girl named Margaret who everyone preceves as "a total loner" who is shunned from the rest of the society. During the summer, she watches two specific beach goers, and makes herself become one, in the storybook lives she makes up for them. Soon, she becomes obsessed in her story,as she starts to believe it to be real, and even changes the possesions of those to include her. All the while, the families she views as perfect uncover their own problems, in their own worlds. They eventually accedentally band together to quite possibly save each others lives. This is a very psycological book. Tip: Pay attention to the characters in her fantasy stories, and you will find the book to have deeper meaning. Really think about it. You'll find out what they really mean, and belive me...THEN, it WILL all make sense. An emotionally touching book.
Rating: Summary: A Wonderful Book Review: The Watcher, however short, was one of the greatest books I've ever read. I love Howe's descriptive technique and how Margret observes the two men's lives and it revolves around all three. I absolutely adored this book. Even in it's major difference between Bunnicula, which I also own.
Rating: Summary: A Suspenceful and breathtakeing book Review: James Howe did a spectaular job on "The Watcher". I,a sixth student read this book because of the reviews on the backcover. They all where correct. The charters are explained superbley. The story can please a fanesty as well as suspence reader because the Watcher "Margreat" has a dream of her life that is so fake that it seems real. This book leaves you woundering at some points and you may have to think. For the fact Margreat fancyes one family so much it leads her to extrem levels to dicover how close she can jet with out actualy being a member of thins family. The ending of "The Watcher" is the best part. Margreat's life and her Dream all weave toghter to make a breath takeing finish that will amaze you. I highley recomed this book the the young adult reader. You will love it. END
Rating: Summary: My review Review: This book was one of the best books I've ever read. The author described the characters in great detail. It shows how you can't judge someone by their appearance. All of the characters are going through their own problems, although the characters are constantly misjudging each other. I really liked this book and I highly recommend it.
Rating: Summary: Good Stuff Review: I think the book The Watcher is a very good book to read. The author explains the characters very explicitly. He makes the characters seem real. Nothing is perfect. I would definitely suggest this book to teenage readers.
Rating: Summary: A Book Worth Reading Review: The Watcher by James Howe was a heartbreaking story told in a very interesting way. It told the story of three characters. Each of them had their own problems and they each had a feeling of despair. The story described how their lives crossed paths on a beach one summer. Everything about this book is great, except the plot may have dragged a little here and there. But the atmosphere, the tension and the mood are described superbly. The characters are intriguing and very realistic in their emotions too. Those elements made The Watcher a book worth reading.
