Summary: If you love action and alien bugs, this book is for you!
Review: This book, by Robert A. Heinlein, is very enjoyable and fun to read. Starship Troopers is in reference to a futuristic mobile infantry. Jonnie Rico is the main character, he defies his parents and joins the Starship Troopers instead of going to Harvard College. He notices when he gets there that he should have taken the latter. However, he turns out to be one of the best in his squad. Eventually, he goes to war against an enemy that is very deadly, Arachnoids, a type of alien bug. Jonnie discovers that all of his training in mobile infantry would never prepare him for this epic war. This book was one of the most controversial novels of the century, and I agree because I do not believe that man will be able to travel the speed of light or use some of the weapons used in this book. But, that aspect is irrelevant because I really enjoyed the book. It draws similarites to Star Wars, but this book has a much darker, serious tone. There are some humorous parts that go well with the novel. This book is nothing like the twisted comedy of the movie that based on it. I thought when I was going to read this book it would be similiar to the movie, but it isn't. The plot is the same but some of the characters act differently and some are completely cut out of the movie. I would recommend for anyone from the ages of 13-40 that loves science fiction books to try this one out and read one of the most controversial novels in the century and make your own opinion.

Summary: This book is sensational, it's like going to the future.
Review: This book is excellent. When you are reading it it feels like you are actually in the war. I know many books do that but in this book yo actually want to go to war. Heinlein's discriptive talents are phenomenal. He is my one of my favorite authores of all time and im only 16. There is only one thing to say about this book AWESOME!!

Summary: An essential part of every sci-fi reader's library.
Review: The movie was excellent but the book is even better. It explore each of the characters in much more detail, and expands the scope of the war. There's more focus on the philosophy of war, and as Juan Rico grows up and matures, he learns the reasons why a nation goes to war, and what it means to be a soldier. It's a fascinating story from a grandmaster of science fiction, and it grabs you right from the beginning and doesn't let go. There are good reasons why this novel is recognized as one of the greatest science fiction novels ever, from the fascinating characters to the interesting science to the mind-provoking philosophy to the superb pacing and storytelling. Heinlein is one of my favorite authors, and this is one of his best works. xibo.com/books.html

Summary: One of the best about a young man's coming of age.
Review: One of the most memorable first lines ever in a story. DEFINITELY NOT BE BE CONFUSED WITH THE MOVIE (BASTARDIZED VERSION - AS ALWAYS). The fact that REH doesn't reveal the full & last name and ethnic of the main character until almost 2/3's into the novel reveals much about his attitude about mid-60's sensibilities (can't give it away to those who haven't read the book). His description of the decisions one has to make coming out of school, the life-style fo the military, the richness of the environment is second to none. I fully believed I was there.

It seemed at times the story line about the "enemy" was secondary (and somewhat undeveloped) to the story line about young Johnny growing and maturing. Even so, they were exciting and very enjoyable.

It did remind me of being a combination of World War II (but in outer space) and other wars where the fighting didn't affect the day to day life of the local populace, until the bombing of a Major City in Argentina, then everyone was all for the war.

I have read the book probably 12 - 15 times over a 30 year period and still find it as fresh today as the first time. Highly recommend the novel to anyone. BUT DON'T SEE THE MOVIE.

Summary: Excellent
Review: An astonishingly honest and deeply moving novel, Heinlein captures the emotional highs and lows of a young man in transition from naive idealist to world wise hopeful. One of the best books ever on the philosophy of leadership and responsibility. A must read for any Sci-Fi fan.

Summary: Not enough battle scenes.
Review: The book had a bit to much philosophy in it. At start i was intrested in Heinlein's words but, getting closer to the book's end the only thing that kept me going was reaching the next battle scene.

Summary: Heinlein's most provocative novel-still controversial...
Review: Written well before advancing age ruined his writing, sometimes sentimental, this is still a novel of ideas that moves with the propulsive rhythm Heinlein is famous for--and his thesis(citizens have a duty to their society and government)is expressed in a way that still makes soft-headed liberals uncomfortable as hell...

Summary: Greatest combination of SF and military strategy around!
Review: Much like L. Ron Hubbard's wartime novel "Final Blackout", Robert Heinlein has expertly woven political philosophy, military strategy, and the ethics of war into an exciting story of one man's involvment in a war of universal proportions. From the first page, the reader is transported into the thick of battle on alien worlds, an academy of military minds comparable to the greatest generals of all time, and facing an enemy so foreign, terror strikes the heart. A non-stop read for SF and military fiction lovers alike.

Summary: One of the all time classic S-F novels
Review: If you saw the movie, be warned, this is not the same story. This is the story as Heinlein meant it to be told, showing the lessons a young man learns as he undergoes military training, and experiences firsthand the reality of modern warfare. Additionally he gives us an intriguing look at a possible future society where the government is run by retired military personnel. You may not agree with Heinlein's politics, or philosophy, but the story will grip you regardless. A must read novel!

Summary: Interesting
Review: Though I agree with most of his views on how the world should be run this book was a little dry. I read this book primarily for his insights into future society. I must agree with most of what he said. When he wasnt waxing philosophical the book tended to drag. I would like to know how the movie and book are related besides the title?
