Rating: Summary: Outstanding Review: Annotation: Will Weaver travels widely, visiting schools and promoting literacy projects across the state and nation.(...) Evaluation: The book I read "The Farm Team," was one of those books that you just can't put down after you have already read the first few pages. It is not a boring book at all, there is so much going on in the book all at once but somehow the author makes it so you can understand everything in the book without getting confused. While I was reading this book I felt like I knew the characters and was actually in the story. I am not much of a reader and every book that I read I always end up putting the book down and never finishing it, but this one was different it was so good I couldn't put it down without knowing what was going to happen next. This book is a fiction book, but everything in the book could happen in real life, it's like a made up story about someone's life on the farm. I would recommend this book to people out there that aren't much of readers they should try this book it worked for me.

Rating: Summary: Play Ball! Review: Come one, come all to explore the exciting sport of baseball in the fun filled novel Farm Team, by Will Weaver. This fiction novel takes place in the small town of Flint, Minnesota in the 1970's. Since Billy Baggs's father was thrown in jail for violent conduct, Billy is stuck doing all of the work on the farm over the summer. Because Billy is engaged entirely in chores and helping out his mother, he has very little time to play the game he loves most, baseball. After long hours of work, Billy's mother suggests making a baseball field in the cow pasture and inviting kids from all over the neighborhood to create a farm team. After many days of practicing, the team decides that they should try out their talent by playing the city team. Finally, when the day comes, fans from all over the city come to watch the down to the wire game. If you want to find out who comes up victorious, you will have to read the book. This novel was written to show that all kids need to enjoy their childhood and not be occupied in labor. I believe that the author wants to entertain the reader by showing his love for the game of baseball. I recommend this book to anybody who enjoys the game of baseball, and wants a quick read. Be prepared, however, for some expressive and sometimes profane language. So step up to the plate and hit a grand slam home run with Farm Team. Until then, play ball!
Rating: Summary: Farm Team Review: Farm team took place in the year 1971 at Flintwood Middle School. The main charachter in the book was Billy Baggs. Other charachters were his father Abner, his mother Mavis, his rival friend Kenwood, and there coach Andreson. Billy and his family live in the country on a farm where they grow crops and raise animals. Billy's father ends up going to prison in the begining of the story because he ran over Randy Myers cars with a D-6 Catipillar. Abner really dosnt care how much BIlly gets in to as long as his farm work is all complete Abner will leave Billy alone. Bill is the kind of person who has a lot of confedence in him self an wilol stick up for himself when people like Kenwood make fun of him. BIllys mother is kind of quiet and dose not talk that much. Mavis loves her husband a lot but dosent have any control over Abner or Billy. Her opinins are really not heard by billy or Abner. Kenwood is a spolied little rich kid and lives in the rich area of Flintwood. He also likes to make jokes about Billys father being in prison. Coach Anderson trties to keep billy out of trouble because he has a really good pitching arm and the coach wants Billy on the team.Billy wants to be on the team but his farm work keeps Billy from getting to go to practice. THe literary elements are foreshadowing, sensry languge, plot, similes, irony, and mood. My opinion on the book was that it was excellent. I like the book so much because Billy had a lot of responsibilities to keep up with.
Rating: Summary: The Love of the Game Review: Greed, envy, hate, jealousy, love, maturity, are all portrayed in the Billy Baggs novel by Will Weaver and Michael Koelsch. Farm Team is a classic novel of the angry farm kid against the popular town kid. The town coach wants Billy to pitch for his team because he has the strongest arm that he has ever seen on a boy his age. Of course, the town kid King Kenwood is the pitcher for the team, and is about to meet his match with Billy. Then, one day Billy's father Abner Baggs picks him up from school on his way to the crooked salesman's lot where he was sold a Chevrolet that doesn't run. Abner decides that he wants to get back at the crooked car salesman by destroying all of his cars and his lot. Abner is aressted for destruction of property and sent to jail which leaves Billy incharge of the farm. After a couple of weeks by himself on the farm, you could really notice Billy grownig into a man, and he even took on the harsh attitude that his father always carried with him. Of course, Billy wasn't able to attend baseball practice, he wasn't even able to attend school. Billy's mother noticed his longing to play baseball so she suggested that they build their own field and make a farm team and play the town team. Billy loved the idea, and everyday after chores he would work on the field, and every Friday they would practice until the sun went down. The Farm team included only ten players, one of which was Billy's dog Skinner as a backup center fielder. Billy at pitcher, the two sisters, one at catcher and one at center field, the two brothers from Mexico, Big Danny boy at right field and three others. Finally, the big day came that the farm team would play the town team, it was going to be a great game. Who do you think walked away the winner that day?
Rating: Summary: A worthwhile book, indeed! Review: I was advised to read this book for a college class and quite frankly, I was glad I was as I really enjoyed it. The storyline involved a boy named Billy who is issolated by distance and society norms. He has an emotionally abusive father, yet he daily overlooks his fathers inabilities and focuses on his strengths, thus encouraging all of us to focus on the good qualities someone possess. Another enlightening portion of the plot consisted of Billy's mother and her continous, unconditional love for her son and her difficult husband. There are numerous pertinent life lessons incorporated throughout this enticing, realistic novel. As a parent of three children, I would highly recommend it to children ten years of age and older as well as adults. It was refreshing to read such a realistic, personable novel. Needless to say, I will be reading Will Weaver's other books - he is an exceptional author!

For one night kids can play baseball with each other for fun. On one of theses nights the coach from the town team comes over and Billy challenges the town team to a game. Using skill and ability the town team is defeated by Billy's squad of country players. I enjoyed reading this novel and certainly recommend it to anyone who is looking for a good sports novel.

Rating: Summary: Good Mix of Farm Life and Baseball Review: There is a little too much of the crude in this book for my taste - obscene gestures, mostly. There is also a bit of self-righteousness in getting even. Nonetheless, this is a sympathetic look at farm life and kids' aspirations. It is an up-to-date look at aspects of life that aren't usually presented to citified kids - a modern day dairy farm and, peripherally, the lives of migrant workers. Even the crudeness serves to make the book more realistic. The characters are well drawn and interesting - each with their own strengths and weaknesses.
