Will Hobbs successfully weaves Jason's travels across America and up to the Yukon around real places, people and events. Although Seattle plays a minor role in this story, it illustrates how the city actually served as a "jumping off" place for those rushing to the Klondike Gold Rush of 1897."Jason's Gold" is in the same tradition as fine adventure stories such as "Hatchet," "My Side of the Mountain," and--of course--Jack London's "White Fang" and "The Call of the Wild." After reading "Jason's Gold," you might enjoy reading the famous--and humorous--Klondike poem, "The Cremation of Sam McGee," by Robert Service.
Rating: ![2 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-2-0.gif) Summary: Not Age Appropriate Review: After my daughter experienced a few nightmares, I read this book myself to see what all the fuss was about. Within the book a miner 'blows his brains out' and among other things a crude amputation is performed 'in detail' after which the child is left by his relatives to die in their mad rush for wealth. This is not my idea of an appropriate book for an 11 year old. To me there is no glory, only an immense waste of human life in this book. It is depressing and moreover I was angered that the public school system chose to present it as part of the ciriculum without some sort of warning to parents and students about violent content. I'm not sure what everyone believes appropriate anymore, however if you made a movie with the same detail as this book I can guarantee that the rating would be R and no child would be watching it.

Rating: ![4 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-4-0.gif) Summary: Jason's Gold Review: I bought this book for my 10-year son, who is an avid reader. He insisted that I also read it. This novel is historically accurate to the point of harshness. My son loved the book and so did I. It's great for family discussion; however, it may be to mature for many youngsters. If you are interested in seeing images from the Yukon Gold Rush, visit the University of Washington internet site for more than 700 photographs by Eric Hegg - yes many of Jason's Gold's characters are real!
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Jason's Gold Review: I read this book as a preview for my son and was thoroughly entertained by the story. The story is fast paced and very vivid about a young man and his adventures enroute to the Alaska frontier. You could almost see and feel what Jason was experiencing as he travelled. When I convinced my 14 year old to read it, he did not put it down until he had finished the last page!! I would recommend this story to any age and sex reader. It was a wonderful story.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: interesting adventure. learn about the klondike gold rush Review: i read this book to my boys (9 and 11) and we all enjoyed it. A quick read with lots of adventure. a good historical fiction that was fun to read and taught about the klondike gold rush! we are going to alaska this summer and now my boys know some history about skagway and the yukon. I'd say prior to this book my boys had a very "romantic" view about the gold rush. Now they know the extreme hardships that people endured. I highly recommend this book if you are travelling to alaska with your children. I also recommend this book to any middle schooler or 4+ grade student who likes adventure. I'd bet both boys and girls would love it, but because the main character is a boy it's sure to be a hit with the boys!

As a fan of Gary Paulsen's survival stories, this is another novel to add to the list. I also like how this fictional novel was written as close to the real events of the Yukon Gold Rush as possible. An excellent read!

Rating: ![4 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-4-0.gif) Summary: Jason's Gold Review: Jason Hawthorn, after hearing the news about the Klondike gold mine, hurries home to tell his brothers that he was going to Alaska. When Jason arrives home, he finds out that his brothers had already left for Alaska. They had also taken the money that his father had left for Jason when he died to by their own food and supplies for the trip. This left Jason with absolutely nothing. He decides to go to Alaska anyways to catch up with his brothers. Since he was not carrying much, he would be able to move quickly. I really enjoyed this book because it has a little bit of everything. There is action, just a bit romance, and tragedy. It was pretty hard for me to put down this book. There was a lot of suspence, which made me sad whenever I had to put this book down to eat or use the restroom. This event actually happened, so while you are enjoying this book, you are actually also taking in information. It shows a lot of what happened and how people felt when they had accomplished their goal by reaching Alaska or how they felt when they had failed to reach Alaska. Many people died since it was so cold up in the up there in the mountains. A lot of animals also died, such as dogs and horses. Many people that bought them had no idea what they ate or how to care for them. My favorite part of this book was when a little boy had got his legs frozen. While he was walking to Alaska, he had gotten water in his boots and had forgotten to take them off the dry them. The only thing that he could have done was cut his leg off. The little boy's uncle leaves him there with Jason because he thought he would die. The uncle also didnt have any time to wait for the little boy's legs to heal, so he just left. He had lost a lot of blood when they cut off his leg, and his uncle gave up hope for him surviving. If he did survive, Jason would not have enough food to last him the whole winter. How in the world was he supposed to feed the little boy now?
