Rating: Summary: Eleanor's Story: An American Girl in Hitler's Germany Review: I don’t know when I have been more touched by a book...and I read a lot of books. I started Eleanor’s Story thinking I had read (and maybe knew) it all about Hitler’s Germany. After all, how many books have been written about the war from every angle? But a few pages into the book I knew I was reading something unique: World War II from a young girl’s perspective. For the first time I realized I was learning what German families went through. We all hear what happened to the Jews...but how was the ordinary German coping with the enormous changes in their society and their lives, and how were they surviving? As Eleanor, her family and friends faced horrors daily that many of us have never imagined in our worst nightmares, you see how they struggle with their everyday living conditions and the uncertainty of the war. As Eleanor grows and changes so do her perceptions. I can only hope that every teen-ager in this country will have the opportunity to read Eleanor’s Story. They need to know the sacrifices that have been made by so many before them so that they may enjoy the comfortable lives they have today.

Rating: Summary: Review- Eleanor's Story Review: In this book, Eleanor Ramrath Garner is the main character and she is an American. Her family originates in Germany, but they live in America at the beginning of the book. The time period is during Hitler's realm, but the father gets a job in Germany. I didn't understand why they actually wanted to move during this time, but they did. I thought that Garner kind of dragged on a little bit. The story had a good background, but she talked too much about somethings that really weren't that important to the reader in my opinion. Eleanor's parents were also very mean. They were always really unjust to their kids. Although the book was kind of boring, it did give an interseting point of view from a German person. Most other books about the Holocaust are from a point of view of a Jew. Towards the end of the book, you can see Eleanor growing up and becoming more mature. Her dad starts giving her more respect, because he can relate better to an adult than to a child. I think Eleanor grew up faster partly due to the war because she expreienced a lot more than other children her age did. I also think she grew smarter later in life because her tryig to survive the way she did. I would rate this book a 7 out of 10 because although it was boring, it also had some interesting points. (Such as the German point of view.)I would recommend this book to somebody who wants to read about what it was like to be on the opposite end of things during the Holocaust.
Rating: Summary: Our Review of Eleanor's Story Review: Many immigrant families struggled not only financially, but also from personal persecution from other Americans. In the time before World War II, Eleanor's father, struggling to make it in America moved their family back to Germany for a better job opportunity. As fate would have it, on the voyage home World War II breaks out. Eleanor and her family are trapped in Germany having to survive the war from both sides. During the war Eleanor experiences hunger, extreme cold, and a lack of stability. Once the war ended, Eleanor's pain continued because she was separated from half her family until enough money was raised to reunite them once again. This captivating story of one girl's struggle in Hitler's Germany gives the reader an alternate view of Germans during World War II. The book contains mature content, which may not be suitable for preteens. This book would be interesting for people in 8th grade and older. It could promote Geography, History, the arts, Social Sciences, and relationships, along with possible other subjects.

Rating: Summary: The title says it all Review: Most of the literature concerning WWII that I've read deals specifically with the Holocaust. I chose to read this book for that reason. What I found was that the title says it best. Here we are presented the story of Eleanor, an American (her parents are German immigrants), who follows her family to Germany during wartime. The readers get to experience through her vivid recounts what it was like to grow up during this time. As for my opinion, the story and subject are interesting but the writing is not. I found myself becoming bored very easily with this book. I believe this book would find more interest with middle schoolers than high schoolers.
Rating: Summary: The Girl on Both Sides Review: This book is an autobiography about a girl's life in Hitler's Germany. Her parents were both from Germany, but they had moved to America where her brother, Frank, and she were born. When she was nine, her family was forced to move back to Germany because they couldn't afford to live in America. After a few years at her new home, disaster struck. Hitler had declared war on Denmark and Norway. She lives through nights of hiding in the bomb shelter during the bombing and suffered with famine and lack of water for almost 3 years. I didn't have a favorite part because the book wasn't very interesting. Still, I did like the part when Eleanor and her friends drew a picture of a heart with an arrow sticking out with thick white chalk onto her teacher's chair. No one else in the class liked him either, so they didn't let them stop them. After school, Eleanor and her friends followed him, admiring their 'wonderful' walking artwork. I didn't like the book, but I didn't not like the book, either. It wasn't very interesting because it was just about Eleanor's life during the war. What had happened outside during the bombings while she was inside? How was the war like to the soldiers? However, sometimes I just kept reading and it was almost impossible to stop because I wanted to know what happens next.
Rating: Summary: A Fantastic Books for Teens and Adults! Review: This book really blew me away. It was very easy to get into and I could not put it down. I never even considered the idea that someone would move back to Germany during WWII until I read this book. Elanor's insights were extremely interesting because it allows us to see a first hand American view of what was occurring in Germany at this time. Elanor was a very brave girl and should be considered a role model for children everywhere. This book should be a school assigned book because of its historical value and literary merit. Elanor's Story is definitely not your typical Holocaust/WWII book. It digs deeper and touches you on a different level.

Rating: Summary: AMAZING account that is hard to come by Review: This was an extremly good book. I have read numerous books that are from a paritisan's perspective, a survivor, a prisoner, etc. But NEVER have we considered the emotions that went on actually inside Hitler's Germany. This is a must read book for all WWII buffs, and other people besides. Eleanor went through hunger, starvation, and always fearing for her life as well as the lives of her family. We Americans seem to have the forever present thought "this could never happen to us! We're Americans!" But alas, it at least happened to six of our people, and boy do they have an awesome story to tell!
