Rating: Summary: Thriller, Chiller, and a killer Review: Sorcerer's of the Nightwing is a captivating read, with mystery and suspense that will keep you on your toes. "The music comes from a TV set, turned to face an empty beanbag chair. It sounds like some kids show, tiny voices and the repetitive crash of the laugh track. 'Alexander?' Devon repeats. 'You in here?' Suddenly he feels something lunge at him, grab him around his shoulders. It's back, he thinks quickly. I was unprepared. The thing. Instinctively he summons all his power to thrust whatever's on his back clear across the room and into the far wall. It thuds hard and slides down to the floor..." Geoffrey Huntington gives us the story of Devon March. An average ordinary 14 year old, other than the fact that he can move objects with his mind and summon incredible strength. Closing off the East Wing where voices beckon him toward the bolted door. Clawing and scraping can be heard, the demon's want out. Suspense builds in this masterful novel when Devon meets Alexander, the strange and precocious child. Is he but a mislead youngster or a link to the Madman? Rating: Summary: KOOL Review: The bad news first: this book takes a lot of cues from "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." You have the high school sophomore, moving to a new town, discovering their powers as a divinely appointed defender against the supernatural. Instead of Watchers, you have Guardians. Instead of the Hellmouth, you have the Hellhole.
It also takes a lot from "Dark Shadows." You have the windswept house on the cliff in New England. You have the family cannery and fishing fleet. Amanda Crandall is basically DS's Elizabeth Collins Stoddard, down to the errant husband and sexy teenage daughter. Rolfe Montaigne is DS's Burke Devlin. Troubled Alexander is DS's David Collins. The book's hero, Devon March, ends up being a sort of male Vicky Winters, in that he's a companion for Alexander while searching out the mystery of his identity. Simon is a copy of DS's menacing groundskeeper. There's the closed-off wing to the house. There's the ghost who weeps at night.
But...the book has a narrative verve that keeps it going. There are some quite original shudders and some interesting characterization. A lot of the book's younger readers will probably spot the Buffy elements but miss the Dark Shadows elements, so they probably won't mind as much as an adult will.
It is profoundly derivative, but the author has potential.

Rating: Summary: absolutely fabulous Review: This book is about 14 year-old-boy Devon March. He has a father, Ted March, but the mother has left. Sounds ordinary right? Think again! Ever since he was a little boy, he was haunted by demons, from a hellhole-a gateway to hell. Devon, through experence discovered he had a special power, in which he could send the demons back to hell, by only a swipe of his hand. He also has a voice, guiding him always, to the right direction. But Devon's father fell into an illness, which took his life away. In Ted's last words, he explained to Devon that he was adopted. So who were his real parents? Surely they must also have powers are great as his. Devon's atopted father has given his guardianship to Mrs Crandall, a rich women who lives far away with her familly in the mysterious Misery Point. What secrets lie there? Has his presence stirred things up? People warn him of the ghosts that lerk in the old mansion, the Muir ancestors in the family's legends. But Devon's on a quest. A quest to find his past. This is the most breath-taking book I've read!!! An epic story which you get sucked into, brilliant is the word to descirbe such a great story. Once I started, I really couldn't put the book down! You can really imagine them in your mind, how the author discribes everything with great detail, but not that much to make you fall asleep. I recommand this to everyone from teenagers (like me) to young adults. Beware, it's quite complex but it's till gripping to read from beginning to end! If you like this book, read the second book in the series too (Demon Witch), I'll gaurentee you'll love it!

Rating: Summary: Harry Potter meets Buffy Review: This book popped up in my recommendations and curious I placed it on my wish list and received it as a gift. How thankful I am that I got it. The protagonist, Devon March is a 14 yr old "average" kid with a few minor exceptions, primarily being the monsters and bogeyman we all fear in our closet and under the bed are real for Devon and have plagued him all his life. To his astonishment he finds his fathers words "you are stronger than all of them" to be true and can banish the demons back to where they came from. Unfortunately for Devon his life takes a seriously unexpected twist. His father passes away leaving him to wrestle with the fact that he wasn't his true father and leaves guardianship of him to a mysterious woman living in Misery Point, Rhode Island at Ravenscliff Manor. There he attempts to uncover the past to not only find out who he is, who his parents are, but what inevitably is his future. We encounter some wonderfully written characters that are not dumbed down for children's sake, nor are the adults completely incompetent. Devon, and his gang of misfits which include Cecily, his guardian's daughter; DJ, the older kid with a car; Ana the cheerleader; and Marcus the recently outed gay student, try to fight the plague of demons that befall them with some assistance by Rolfe, an entrepreneur with a shady past. The only reason I gave this book 4 stars is due to the ending. What starts out as an incredibly climatic scene facing off Devon with the "Madman" is diffused very easily leaving me wanting more. Despite that I have the 2nd book on order here at Amazon.com and look forward to more.
