Summary: Naiive
Review: This book took a walk away from the normal fantasy literature path and unfortunately stepped in a pile of dragon doo doo. The creation of the world in which the characters live is very believable; the towns and beautiful landscapes are painted quite well. Even the fantastical dragons conjured up by her have unique personalities, making them believable. The actual writing, however, seems to lapse into a poorly copied version of fantasy dialogue. The way in which characters constantly interact with one another on such a level of politeness becomes increasingly annoying. Each "honor" that is done unto another is followed by great giving of thanks and then, naturally a return of that thanks by describing how deserving the person was of the honor. The dialogue between dragons and humans especially seems to go overboard here. The love story that develops is very naiive. I'll spoil it because you shouldn't read this book anyway: a woman falls in love with a dragon. The dragon ends up turning into a man, but the love that occurs between them in a matter of days (while he's a dragon) is very unconvincing. In summation, don't buy this book.

Summary: Wow.
Review: When I finished this book, but a few hours past, I immediately went in search of a continuence. When I found it, I was overjoyed. I have to read 'The Lesser Kindred' now. I will spare you my own little summary of this book...you've had enough of that, I'm sure, but I will tell you that this book has touched me. I had checked this book out of my school library last year, but never picked it up to read it. I recently checked it out again, and still put off the reading of it. I finally picked it up yesterday and started reading. Almost from the start I found in Lanen a kindred spirit. I have this unshakeable need to leave my home...and the love of Dragons. It's almost laughable, but I would give anything just to speak to such a being; such power and wisdom. Somewhere deep, despite all logic from my mind, I believe that dragons had to have existed, somewhere. In reading this, I was able to myself in the shoes of someone living two of my dreams...I have always wanted to find true love, as well. To end, this book has touched me on a more than personal level, and I am looking so forward to reading books following it. It is definitely a book I would recommend to anyone, even if their normal interests range outside of the fantasy realm. I wish that everyone would take the time to read such an amazing book.
Go you safe and keep you safe, and come safe home to me,
(Lanen's heart-father's farewell to her)

Summary: Different Style
Review: First, I *love* dragons, and I'm a fiend for romance, so it's no surprise that I really enjoyed this book! Lanen was a great character to "live" with, and Akor (the dragon) was amazing. However. The reviews are true -- the book is a bit predictable with the "evil" that they face. I also found the long, drawn out explanatory passages a bit tedious, and the narrative style was difficult to adjust to, as well. I don't tend toward first person narrative, and this book is written in MULTIPLE first person narrative. The POV character switches in the middle of the scene, and often, in the middle of dialog. It's not confusing, it's just not "typical." Sometimes I felt like I wanted the author to pick one POV character and stick with it!!! I didn't need the internal thoughts of EVERYONE -- the good guys, the bad guys, minor characters, EVERYONE has their own POV.

Of course, if you can get past that, the book is amazing. It takes a while to get to the romance, and in that you have your typical fantasy plot, but all in all its a good mix of the two. The romance is very enjoyable, however.

Ms. kerner did a good job, and I look forward to reading the future books in this series!

Summary: My Favorite Book
Review: This book is one of the best I have ever read. I first found it at the local library. After checking it out three times in 4 months, I decided to just buy my own copy. Since then I have read it so many times I can nearly recite scenes from memory.

The strangest thing... A week before I found this book, I had a dream in which I traveled to a mysterious island and fell in love with a Dragon; which is exactly what happens to the story's heroine, Lanen Kaelar.

Summary: High flying reviews don't substantiate
Review: I have to agree with the reader who wrote that he was disappointed after hearing all the glowing reviews for this book. I saw that Jane Yolan had praised her and went into this book expecting more than I got. I wish that I hadn't read the reviews because then I would have enjoyed this book more than I did. The characters were all well thought out and the forbidden romance, which turned out to be the main focus of the book, was well-written. Other than that the story was predictable and the villian, who had demons after him to repay a debt, was extremely non-threatening and stupid. I HATE stupid villians. I never worried that any of the good characters would die. From the tone of the book I knew that if anyone died it would only be the bad guys. All said, it was an average read. If, unlike me, you like romances, you would probably enjoy this book more than I did.

Summary: What a sappy romance!
Review: All right, I delved into this story with high expectations, what with all the good ratings. However, what I found was one very gushy, abstract story. The plot was extremely weak and easily predictable--other than Lanen going to the Dragon Isle and falling in love with Akor, and getting her revenge on her father Marik, there wasn't much else. I saw the ending coming half-way through. I've never made such a bad choice in buying a fantasy novel! Save your money, folks!

Summary: A Great Find
Review: I was browsing the Science Fiction shelves... when I happened upon this book. I was looking for adventure, fantasy, and romance. This was just the sort of book for me.

Lanen has grown up with her father and his horses, never having any adventures and always feeling unwanted because of her height and unusual strength. Then her father dies, leaving the Stead for her. But she decides she has had enough of living a life without excitement, and heads off to the Dragon Isle, where she hopes to find real dragons. She finds a harvest ship heading for the Isle, and hires on as a harvester. When she reaches Dragon Island, she realizes that the creatures she has always dreamed about are real. And that is where the action begins.

Full of adventure, romance, evil plots, and magical transformations, this is the perfect book for a lover of fantasy. It is definitely one of my favorites, and it has already found a special spot on my already-full bookshelves.

Summary: I LOVE It!
Review: Dragons, love, hate, greed, it's got it all! Lanen Kaelar loves dragons, even though she has never met one. When she gets offered a spot on a ship traveling to an island that supposedly is full of them... well, whe just can't resist. When she gets there, she meets the love of her life, but gets involed in an intricate plot set to control her. It ends on a good note, but it leaves you asking questions. If you don't like cliff hangers, don't pick up the second book yet. Wait until the third comes, because the ending for the second leaves a lot more than the first. If you like dragons, pick this up quick. It's great!
