Rating: Summary: *Screws her jaw shut* Review: Okay, how to start...but, one problem: once I start, I won't be able to end. The legend of the Firebringer. The most ingenious, original, beautiful piece of writing I have ever, ever come across. It is a masterpiece. If ever you have read any books based on unicorns: throw those aside. Cast all other visions aside. Read, and be entranced. It is just beautiful. This world that Ms. Pierce has created is unlike any other. The unicorns that dwell in it have their own society, culture, and legends...their own world, apart from ours, unlike anything you would ever imagine. Aljan, prince of the unicorns, young and headstrong: his life is changed forever during his initiation as a Warrior -- travelling to the sacred Mirror of the Moon in the midst of his ancestors' lands; stolen by the wyverns. For four hundred years, his people, the unicorns, have been exiled from their rightful home: the Hallow Hills. And now, four hundred years later, young Jan discovers his destiny as the legendary Firebringer, and goes forth to weave yet another legend in his life alone. The story is unforgettable. It has touched a place in my heart and every single time I re-read this book and its followers, Dark Moon and the Son of Summer Stars, I find something new...something different, deep that I didn't catch before. Forever these books are at the top of my favorites list: their name is engraved, never to fade. Hard though they are to find, you will never ever forget them, and you will treasure them forever to come. For no one who has ever read them will ever forget the story and the legend of the Firebringer...
Rating: Summary: My favorite book since I was 8 years old!! Review: The battle between beauty and the beast. The story of a young prince with an amazing amount of courage. This book left me loving everything about mythical creatures and itching for more. I came across The Son of the Summer Stars First and quickly awaited the first book which I ordered from the library. My mother read most of the Birth of the Firebringer to me first and after getting psyched at the end I stayed up till 2:00am (this was at age 8 keep in mind) and read the rest. I checked out and read Darkmoon and The Son of the Summer Stars, enjoying them just as much. Jan, Aljan, Darkmoon, son of the summer stars....whatever name joys you more to call him by, this book inspired me in many ways and it'll forever remain in my heart. THESE ARE MY FAVORITE BOOKS ON ANY SHELF!!!
Rating: Summary: Uneven writing Review: The plot's not bad. Most of the writing is adequate, but with occasional lapses. It's full of repeated single word sentences "Hist.", "List.", and sometimes "Hie.", clumsy archaisms, and plain bad writing. For instance, on pages 32 (of the ominbus volume) we find
"His vitals turned."
and on the next page,
"Tek feinted clumsily twice, three times with her horn, but missed each time." (she confuses feint with lunge in several places)
The Amazon blurb says "reading level: ages 9-12". 9-12 year olds probably won't mind, but I don't recommend it for adults.
Rating: Summary: I couldn't put it down! Review: The story of Aljan, Dagg, and Tek's adventure kept me captivated. I find myself reading the book over and over again. I have been trying to find the other two books but without success. I'm still trying to find out what happens between the wyverns and the unicorns. An excellent book!
Rating: Summary: Aljan:Prince of the Unicorns Review: These books are the best books i have ever read! I have always been a huge fan of unicorns and these books are the best unicorn books i have ever come by. I wish they were still in print so other people who haven't heard of them can read them. I was spellbound and didn't stop searching till i found all three.
Rating: Summary: "When Alma created the world...." Review: This book and the two that follow it form the most undeservedly obscure trilogy in fantasy. If a coming-of-age adventure with a unicorn protagonist and a cast of characters including marauding gryphons, treacherous wyverns, and a goddess of many guises sounds unlikely, my only suggestion is, read and be entranced: it's beautiful! Pierce's exquisite, lyrical language and hypnotizing narrative spring from the same source as the epic cycles of myth and legend. At the same time, the wonderful creatures--mythical and otherwise--who people her world are vividly believable and blazing with life. The "young adult" designation is apt, but not important: these are great stories, and as any lover of fantasy knows, great stories transcend labels. Difficult as they are to find (the first two are VERY out of print, though the third, _The Son of Summer Stars_, is, I believe, still available,) they're worth the quest. These books have affected me powerfully in more ways than I can express, but I can say with confidence that once you have listened to the Lay of the Unicorns, fled from a serpent-cloud on the Great Grass Plain, and danced with a wyvern under a dark moon, the wild song of Aljan son-of-Korr will echo through your dreams ever after
Rating: Summary: Get this book!! Review: This is one of the best books. I think that some people would not like it very much becuase there are no people in the book (I don't know any other reason it would be out of print). One thing that makes this book realy interesting is that it is told from the perspectiave of the unicorn, very different from most of the storys that are from the point of view of a young girl. With an intreaging plot that is full of new ideas, this book is great.
Rating: Summary: Fabulous Fantasy! Review: This is one of the best written and the most interstingly plotted unicorn books that I have ever read. It inspired me from start to finish and I have read it over several times. The unicorns are quite humanesque in the way they are portrayed with their customs and even the way they live and treat their "teenagers". I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to read!!
Rating: Summary: simply the best Review: this is the best book i have ever read in my life, & i seriously rate i over even peter beagles 'the last unicorn' & i cant figure out why on earth it is out of print, this entire trilogy should get the world-wide recognition that it deserves, a movie & everything, i only wish it was easy to find so that all future generations could have the chance to gallop in the world that meredith pierce has created , & i hope that one day this masterpiece is brought back from the edge of being lost forever to all who never had a chance to experiance it, but one things for sure anyone who reads this will certainly never EVER forget it. indigo
Rating: Summary: Not your ordinary unicorn story! Review: This is undoubtedly the best fantasy book ever written about unicorns. The story begins with a fiery young unicorn prince, Jan, who more than anything, wants to prove himself to his father, Korr. Although Jan's curiosity and love of pranks and tricks gets him into trouble, a valiant fight to protect his people from a vengeful griffon helps encourage his father's decision to let him go with the other soon-to-be warriors on their pilgrimage across the Great Plain. The journey shows Jan that there is far more to the world than just that within his people's ring. He begins to question his destiny and what he is to become. Little does he know what future lays before him, how the wyverns who took over his people's lands and the prophecy of the Firebringer will affect his life and of all unicorns.Meredith Ann Pierce brings a rich history, language and culture not only to the unicorns, but to all the mythical creatures in her book. Her writing style, great imagination and wide diversity of incredibly detailed characters makes her unicorn's world so believeable, it is difficult to read other author's books about them. This book has a powerful message about following your heart, personal triumph, responsibility, selflessness, standing up for what you believe in and much more. Once you pick up this book, you'll not want to put it down. I highly recommend obtaining a copy of Birth of The Firebringer as well as the other two books in this captivating trilogy. Since, once you get started, you'll not want to stop until you've read this series in its entirety. It should never have been taken out of print. This is one story that would make a great animated motion picture. Give this book a chance. You will not be sorry!
