Summary: Dream-like
Review: I read this book years ago, and i have been trying to find it and the other parts of the series, but have been unable to. I finished this book and felt like i had been woken from a dream. I loved how the unicorns are not frail and wimpy, but actually are fighters. Over all this book was wonderful.

Summary: An Old Favorite
Review: I'll even admit it right off the bat: I still like unicorns. As a child, I was into anything unicorn-related--even the airbrushed, mass-media-image ones you saw given away as prizes at the State Fair. (You know which ones I mean, with the pink manes and everything. Admit it, you had them, too.) Now that I'm older, my unicorn-stuff collection has thinned out quite a bit. I've grown out of most of it...but there are keepers.

If you ever--EVER--had an imagination, this is your book. I've had my battered copy since it was published in 1985, and haven't gotten tired of it yet. The story centers around Aljan, Prince of the Unicorns. Aljan's journey takes you into a believable world full of legend and lore that will draw you in and hold you until the very last word. And then you'll want to read it again.

This book is part of the "Firebringer Trilogy," which includes "Dark Moon" and "The Son of Summer Stars," all by Meredith Ann Pierce. (Incidentally, all three will be re-published by Firebird Books in Summer 2003--a long time in coming, if I may say so!) While the second and third books are good in their own right, they don't come close to the first. This is the one you're going to keep.

Summary: The fire burns eternally
Review: I, like others that have written reviews on this book, read this when I was in latter grade school. It has easily been my favorite book, and I had no idea that there were two books following the original. If anyone reading this review would know of anywhere I could get a copy of the other two books, please contact me.

Summary: An epic tale that brings unicorns to life!
Review: If you have ever wanted to read a novel where unicorns lived and talked and had there own society and way of life, this is it! Interesting story of how a young and fool-hardy unicorn goes through his pilgrimage to become a warrior and a saviour to his people. Filled with action and mysterious villains, the horrible wyverns, it is a fantastical tale told in flowing old-style language at sometimes, that will captivate and delight all fantasy and sci-fi readers. It even has the lightest touch of a classical fairy tale...

Summary: A beautiful, imaginative story that will touch you
Review: Like most of the people who reviewed this book, I first read it way back when I was in primary/middle/junior high school, around 1989 I believe. At the time, it was just one book on its own, not part of a trilogy yet. Indeed, one of my greatest regrets after finishing it was that there was no sequel, and the story seemed to stop right there! I wonder how long it took Ms. Pierce to write Book 2? Anyhow, I was absolutely bowled over by this story. I practically fell down and worshipped at Ms. Pierce's feet. I think it was a major factor in helping me get into fantasy in a big way. This story is unbelievably beautiful, wonderfully crafted, creative and original whilst playing with ideas that have come down to us from ancient mythology. Ms. Pierce has an incredible imagination, and modifies these old ideas into something that is refreshingly her own, and at the same time perhaps even better. I really loved the society/culture of unicorns which she created, it really struck a chord within my own imagination. I've never read any of her other books; I just wonder whether she's explored the other creatures such as the dragons and the griffins? That would be a great step towards developing more of the world she's created. Anyhow, GO READ THIS BOOK. It will reach out and touch you in ways you never imagined. Ms. Pierce, thank you, thank you, thank you, for giving us something this beautiful.

Summary: Worlds of adventure with Unicorns
Review: Meredith Ann Pierce has a unique style of language, and the mystery her tales weave is unlike any other fantasy. I would highly recommend it to young and old fantasy lovers alike -- and a MUST READ to anyone who loves unicorns

Summary: No ordinary book about unicorns!
Review: Most books portray unicorns as wimpy frail scampering creatures, but this book changes all that. Ths is one of the best books I have ever read!

Summary: 10 star book!
Review: Oh, HOW can i reveiw this book with out gushing? I reaadthis book in the 8th grade and i, being an avid fantasy reader gobbledanything. At firt, i put off reading the book because the cover was horrible (let this teach you, NEVER JUGDE A BOOK BY ITS COVER! )I had half of a day to return it. I read with time to spare and was utterly enchanted in the lush, exotic worl ms. Peirce created....

The lay of Jan starts with the headstrong halfgrown Jan-son-of-korr. his whole world changes as he travels across the plains, encountering the wrongly called renagades, pards, tornados, and the mysterious red mare. When they reach the hallowd grounds, Jan is held captive by the enemy of his people and kills it. He learns that he is his peoples fabled firebringer, the deliverer who will defeat the wyrms.

and i could go on & on & on & on & on........

Summary: The Greatest Fantasy of All Time
Review: Ok, where to start. But one problem: once I start, I won't be able to stop. The legend of the Firebringer: the most amazing piece of writing I have ever come across. It is a masterpiece. Ms. Pierce's portrayl of unicorns is unmatched by any other: her writing is beautiful. Read, and you are entranced.

Four hundred years his people have lain in waiting...four hundred years they have lived in the Vale in exile; their rightful home, the Hallow Hills, stolen by the wyverns. Little does the headstrong unicorn prince Aljan know of his destiny as his people's prophecised Firebringer, a legend four hundred years in the making...as he goes forth to weave yet another legend in his life alone...

Read, and you are plunged into the midst of a story unforgettable, and once you have finished the last page you will sit there for a very long time before being able to close the cover, trust me.

Status: Engraved forever at the top of my favorites list.
