Summary: Atom Bombs and foreign intrigue make Dirk Pitt into a 00.
Review: Dragon is a bit run of the mill compared to some of Cussler's other Dirk Pitt books. Dirk's situation becomes a little to Bondish to keep with the tone of the previous novels.

Those who like the Dirk series and Bond, James Bond novels will probably like this novel as much as I did.

Summary: Absolutely awesome! Another classic Cussler!
Review: Dragon is absolutely brilliant. Definitely one of Clive Cussler`s best novels, it charges along at breakneck pace with plenty of suspense and amusement along the way. Our hero Dirk Pitt battles a ruthless Japanese nationalist fanatic(did this novel inspire Tom Clancy`s Debt of Honour?!) who intends to rid the world of chaotic, undisciplined societies and dominate with an economic Japanese master race. And he has, of course, his own robot army to do this, with automated factory! A top villian, explosive action in every sense of the word, Dirk bedding women again and Clive Cussler making a cameo appearance in a classic car race. Don`t forget to add the dry cool wit! Action, suspense, lunacy, fun, what more could you want? BUY THIS BOOK NOW AND I GUARANTEE YOU WON¬T WANT TO PUT IT DOWN! Nick Forbes-Warren

The action really pulls you in,and leaves you gasping for breath. You WILL want to be with Dirk Pitt as he DRIVES along the pacific,or fights robots on a remote Japanese island.SUPERB!!! By the way,how old is Dirk Pitt? He seems to have been 40 for the last 5 years!!!

Summary: Dragon: A Novel
Review: Dragon written by Clive Cussler is the tenth novel in the Dirk Pitt series and is an espionage, under sea thriller complete with mixing recent history with some of our deepest fears.

As the book progresses, and if you were around when the Japanese tried to buy America in the 1980's, you'll find a very familiar theme running through this book. The villian in this book is a mysterious, vile xenophobe, that has infinite patience, is a ruthless evildoer, relying upon financial power rather than military prowess and goes to great lengths to ensure Japanese dominance of the United States. The head of "Murmoto" a maker of automobiles, Hideki Suma is Dirk Pitt's bad guy is this book.

Cussler writes a convincing story as this complex Japanese plot unflods... using atomic weapons, placed in automobiles that are imported and placed in strategic locations throughout the country, ready to release their deadly surprises.

This book takes the reader from the high seas to the ocean depths, around the United States from Alaska to Maryland, as Dirk Pitt works to save the day before the United States lies helpless. This book has a complex ruthlessness about it and is brutally thrilling and entertaining as it combines samurai-inspired Japanese fighting with our hero's one-step-ahead ninja-suited thinking. We go to Europe, in the book, looking for Nazi war booty in underground caves, but all the time, keeping skill and daring, Cussler ties all of these threads together making a richly inspired story.

The story pitts (no pun intended) cunning and might with vast technological resourses and ancient warrior traditions making this book a real page-turner.

Summary: James Bond, Buck Rogers & Jacques Cousteau all in one person
Review: Either you'll love the non-stop action, or you'll laugh at the unlikely chain-of-events that lead to the book's climax. Dirk Pitt, who's been shot more times than a Texas Yield sign, takes on the evil Japanese Empire as they smuggle atomic bombs into America via imported cars. Oddly enough, the trillions of dollars spent on national defense can't stop a bunch of missiles cruising down Route 66 at 55 mph. This book panders to the anti-Japanese sentiment of the early nineties, which severely dates it, and makes it that much less believable. Cussler's Pitt novels have always been over-the-top in their villians, heroes and story plots, but this one will virtually assault your credulity sensors. I usually enjoy the roller coaster ride, but not this time.

Summary: BEST YET
Review: Even if the plot isn't very realistic, I enjoyed every minute of it. The consequence for making a mistake was catastrophic, so they had to make shadowy and smart decisions. Nuclear threat from Japan, which has military history (samurai) makes it easier to add a twist to the story, an assasin who kills with a samurai sword. The constant cat-and-mouse game makes this a great summer reading book.

Summary: What got me started
Review: First off, let me say that I owe a lot to this book. It got me started on Clive Cussler, but, more importantly, it is the book that really got me on the path to being a writer. After reading it, I just knew that writing was what I wanted to do.

Looking back on this book, over ten years later, it doesn't hold the mystique it did back then. Still, this is a classic Dirk Pitt adventure story, with all the trimmings. The action is tense, the dialog witty, and the overall feel is that of a cozy novel.

Cussler's strength lies in his ability to tie seemingly unrelated events together. For instance, the idea of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki going wrong leading to current-day events. It's just interesting how he does it.

Dragon's plot is a bit far-fetched. The idea of someone in Japan wanting to wipe out American civilization seems absurd today. Still, written in the wake of cool relations between us and the Japanese, it rings true, if still a bit hard to believe.

If you like this sort of novel, the action-oriented mystery, then you will absolutely love this book. Cussler writes with an authoritative hand, and, because of him, I found what I really wanted to do with my life.

Thanks, Clive.

Summary: Non-Stop Exciting Fiction That's Not Too Far From Reality!!!
Review: I am an avid Cussler fan and have read most of his books. "Dragon" is one of his best. It ranks a close second to "Cyclops". "Dragon" is a very thought-provoking novel in that it makes me wonder just how far off Cussler's baseline story reflects today's world. His use of robots made for the sole purpose of driving Japanese cars with hidden nuclear bombs to predetermined world locations is disturbing. Who knows how far an intelligent, industrialized nation could go if such a nation fell into the hands of the wrong power-hungry leaders? My only objection came at the end of the story. Without giving anything away, I found it hard to believe how Dirk Pitt managed to survive again! Oh, well. Such is fiction. Despite this minor complaint, "Dragon" is still a great entertaining read with nonstop action. I recommend it to all Cussler fans.
