Rating: Summary: Excellent! Batman, the way he's supposed to be! Review: Frank Miller takes Batman's tragic past and puts it into an even more tragic future. Very well written and if you're a fan of Miller's work, you'll not be disappointed. Not only is it a comic book masterpiece it is also a literary tour de force that has yet to be matched. Miller has the ability to raise any character he touches to an even higher position and The Dark Knight Returns is an excellent, if not the best, example of Miller's magical ability.
Rating: Summary: Do you remember Margaret Corchoran? Review: One of the great aspects of this graphic novel is the many subplots and self contain stories you can find. For example, in just one page Frank Miller introduces you to Margaret Corchoran, he makes you care for her and her son, you share her pain and illusions...then he kills her (the bastard). Well, the mutant gang kills her, and in doing so they earn what came to them...the Dark Knight. There are many reasons to read the book: it is fun, it is well written, it is beautifully drawn (except for one dog), and more important, something changes inside you after you've red it.
Rating: Summary: Best comic ever Review: This is just the best graphic novel ever written. Frank Miller tells the tale of a retired Batman who comes back to whup some major bad guy after a sudden crime breakout brings the some painful memories back to the surface. You'll be surprised to see some familiar faces as well as some new ones. Superman also makes an appearance, but not like you'd expect! The art can seem weird at times, but the story sucks you in. I would also like to reccomend Miller's "Sin City: the Big Fat Kill" and the "Daredevil: the Man Without Fear" mini-series. END
Rating: Summary: Dark Knight Returns Setting Standards 10 Years Later Review: This is argueably the greatest comic book story that was ever told. The Dark Knight Returns set a standard for the "grim and Gritty" age of comic books. Miller's story of a middle age batman coming out of retirement to save the city from the mutant gang which is terrorizing the city, after vowing he would never do it again after the death of Jason Todd aka Robin. The Art is really Miller at his best. It is really questionable near the end of 3 and the rest of 4 but it is great none the less. Klaus Janson's inking is definetly complimenting Miller's artwork but has changed since the Daredevil years with Frank. Lynn Varley's colors are a work of art by itself, but it finishes off the series to a polished shine. Miller's use of the Superman really makes you smile. Bat's was getting a little to big he needed some one to straighten him out. His Robin is just really great. Carrie Kelly is one of those charecter's that just shines. I disapproved of his use of Catwoman but he really made up for it in Year One. We are also treated to the Joker in a catatonic state until he heard of batman's return he show's his perverse love of Batman. Anything you heard of this book is true, so go out and get a copy of this book, you wont regret it.
Rating: Summary: Could someone make this into Batman 5? Review: Quite simply, without a doubt, the best story I have ever read. It shows Batman at sixty, he's been out of the Costume for ten years, he's out of shape, and he now sees that Gotham needs him once again. This batman is out of shape, and therefore more desperate. This batman is not only fighting for Gotham City, but there are higher powers that want him taken down. This is a Batman who takes more drastic measures in the past, and, well...he rumbles with someone you may not expect. Miller's story is as always brillaint, with an amazing, and unexpected ending...Long live the Sons of Batman
Rating: Summary: Wow Review: Three years ago I bought this without so much as a thought into what it was about. I was thoroughly impressed. The Batman here finally unleashes his anger on a crime-ridden society. The best scene was the battle with his one TRUE enemy. Best comic book I ever read. Probably the only problem is that if you're a Batman beginner, it would be helpful to read some of the earlier stuff before, so you can understand some of the references.
Rating: Summary: Is there anyone who does not love this book? Review: If only the next Batman movie would use this book as its story. This book is an absolute classic, not just in the world of comic books, but also in all of literature as well. When my friends get on my case for being a 23 year old comic book reader, I give them a copy of this book and they never question my love for comics again. Dark Knight Returns brings back classic Batman villians, as well as showcasing the brutality of new ones. It establishes old relationships, forges new ones, and ends some others. The use of Superman was absolutely brilliant. The art may be a little suspect at times, but who cares. The story pulls you in and never lets go until that final page.
Rating: Summary: A classic out of the 80s comic book renaissance. . . Review: Frank Miller reintroduced us all to the Batman in the 80s with The Dark Knight Returns. Few interpretations of the character offer him as honestly and powerfully as Miller's, or as consistently. Miller is an inspiring graphic storyteller, deserving of unwavering respect within the comic genre, but demonstrating with The Dark Knight Returns a literary skill that brings the comic medium serious recognition from outside the collector's world and acquaints the non- collector with the realization of graphic storytelling potential as an art.
