Rating: Summary: The top of its medium Review: The Dark Knight Returns is perhaps the finest comic book graphic novel of all time. This four issue series almost single-handedly invented graphic novels as a medium for serious artistic and literary expression, opening the door within a few years for Maus: A Survivor's Tale, among others. The Dark Knight was the first series to popularize offset printed on high-quality papers, rendering it closer in form to a museum catalog than a newsprint comic book. First of all, the images are stunning. Frank Miller's series also represents a critical exploration of the hero icon--here we see an older character on the verge of physical and moral collapse, wrestling with his mortality, limitations, and the dark obsession that has that has been his life. As such, it is also closer by far to Poe or Conrad, than to Jughead or Wonder Woman.
Rating: Summary: one of the best pieces of literature Review: this book brought back the dark knight after years of of him being a sissy hero, and t was a hell of a comeback. it shows us bruce wayne still against violence, superman a pawn for the government, and the joker the way we've never seen him. Hollywood oughta make a film on this one before it's too late.
Rating: Summary: Batman as I've never seen him before. Review: Normally when I think of the caped crusader, I picture a man of limitless vigor, and ageless youth. Frank Miller has taken Batman to a level that truly shows the workings of a super hero's mind. In this story Batman is well into middle age and must fight his own health as well as numerous groups of baddies and mutants struggling for control of Gotham. Instead of praising him, the city has turned on Batman, blaiming him for all the trouble in the first place. It is through this juxtaposition that we see the inner battles of one who does what he thinks is right, regardless of the opinion of others. In my heart, this Batman story will never see it's equal, it is truly the finest piece of comic work I have ever read.
Rating: Summary: tied with the greatest Batman story Review: this is definately one of the best works of Frank Miller. It shows how Batman grows old and how he is affected by his ages but that doesn't stop him from whomping on Superman to a black eye and bent lip. The new Robin was an excellent touch by him refering to Dick Grayson as the hostage boy from memory of two-face. At the beginning two-face cured his face by mtching it. but it's a surprise how. Definately one of the best Batman work in front of Year One and tied with Arkham Asylum.
Rating: Summary: A truly moving peace of work that you will never forget. Review: Old and hunched, Bruce Wayne makes his way out of retirement to serve a world that needs him more than ever. The Mutants, Two-Face, the Joker, Superman, The Sons of Batman, a female Robin, Gordan, a new police commissioner--a whole slew of figures come together to play their part in this great epic. What can be said about this book that has not already been said? Is it entertaining? Definitely. Is it the best Batman story ever? Surely. Is it the one of the greatest stories ever told in any medium? Yes. Yes. Yes. Get this book because it will shock you, move you, and present you with ideas and images that you will never forget.
Rating: Summary: Will Frank Miller Top Himself With A Sequel? Review: The mother of all Batman stories! The Batman of the movie world won't be complete until Hollywood adapts this tale!
Rating: Summary: Will Frank Miller Top Himself With A Sequel? Review: Let's hope that "The Dark Knight Strikes" will be the sequel that will live up to the orginal. This book has a 50'ish Batman getting out of retirement. The criminal element is taking over and Batman has to enlist the help of a young computer whiz who helps him reconstruct his Batcave weapons. The Joker is more notorious than ever. He wipes out the audience at a Letterman show with laughing gas. After this horrific crime Batman is out to finish him for good. Batman is older, wiser and more dangerous than ever. Superman wants to end his violent ways of capturing criminals. However Batman will not go out without a fight. This is the ultimate in Batman stories. If you never read another Batman story again...read this one. We will never see one like this ever again.
Rating: Summary: The best comic story of all time?!? Review: Many people would consider it to be. While I think it is outranked by Marvels, Kingdom Come, and Watchmen, it certainly is in the top five. And without a doubt it is the best Batman story ever. Frank Miller successfully captures the spirit of Batman; violent, moody, and strong, yet cunning, creative, and bright. Miller does a spectacular job with the villains of the story; from Two-Face to Joker to Superman (yes, Superman), they're all there. It's just a shame Miller never did Batman full time, who knows what all he could have accomplished? At any rate, this is a vital part of anyone's collection.
Rating: Summary: The Greatest Comic Book Of All Time! Review: I remember when this first came out in comic book form. This was one of the most highly anticipated books of its time and the anticipation grew after each successive release. In each chapter, the stakes and the excitement grows. This is the definitive look at the Batman, even more so than Bob Kane's! Everyone who writes Batman either for comics or movies should be required to read this first. I've read and re-read these stories dozens of times and I'm always finding something new in the art and story. This story remains as fresh as it was 12 years ago and has taken comics to a whole new level of importance. Buy yours today and read it again and again!
Rating: Summary: Damn Good Reading! Review: We all know who Batman is. A comic book fantasy that was two-dimensional in appearance. But, if you simply give a couple of hours to reading Frank Miller's "The Dark Knight Returns", you will feel a sense of wonderment and awe. Batman becomes a real, flesh and blood person. And yet, never losing the mystique and power that made him a cultural icon. In this story you will see a 50 year old Batman embark on his last and most momentous run as the Dark Knight Detective. Ridding Gotham City of a new powerful gang of anarchists. Settling things with his arch-foe The Joker. And lastly(and most epically), engaging his comic book counterpart and rival, Superman. This book revolutionized the comic medium. Because everything it did, it did it big! Not to be missed!+
