Rating: Summary: Great! Review: I think all of Philip Pullman's books are great! He deserves much more credit than givin! If you love any of his other books you'll love this one too! It's definitely a different style then usual but still noetheless great!
Rating: Summary: very good but beware of chapter six Review: I've read books by Philip Pullman before but this one really suprised me. This is deffenetly not a childrens book, but I thought is was very interesting and I couldn't put it down. Pullman has held his spot as my favorite author.
Rating: Summary: How Interesting.... Review: It's a good book to read at night in front of a fire. The sex scenes are very detailed. Pullman wrote this differently than his other hits, but that makes it all the more interesting. Romantics would especially like this book. (Warning:Keep out of hands of children!!)
Rating: Summary: Could it get any worse Review: Look, the book was OK, but...its the worst book Ive ever read. Its not even original, Its a reteeling of Romeo and Juliet. The plot twists is really bad and predictable. COME ON PEOPLE! DO YOU REALLY THINK THAT ITS REALISTIC. I MEAN, BY COINCIDENCE, SHE JUST HAPPENS TO-- I DONT WANT TO GIVE IT AWAY. If your curious and bored enough, read the book. Even 10 year-olds can see that this is not realistic, Phil Pullman is a fairy tale writer and he should stick to that By the way, the sex scene is not that shocking, its just plain..let me put it this way, it was written by a horny, bald, peverted 40 year old man.
Rating: Summary: A modern addition to Pullman's scope of wonderful books Review: Philip Pullman has done it again in this captivating novel about trust, betrayal and love. While His Dark Materials was delightful in an innocent, fantastical sort of way, this book seemed a bit darker, more honest, and truer to our life. None of those things are bad or good; they're just different; and if you're expecting another THE GOLDEN COMPASS, change your expectations or you may be startled. This is an older children's book, more for fans of Chris Crutcher than C.S. Lewis. The characters are like people you meet on the street, not "destiny children" like Lyra and Will. They have dark pasts and modern-day troubles. You will love them and understand them as normal contemporary people.Pullman's descriptions bring the print of the book to real life. Without ever boring you, he lets you feel Chris's emotions, and Jenny's, and their feelings about their pasts and each other. It's a tragedy book with plentiful references to child abuse, sex and troubled families, which means I wouldn't give it to a ten-year-old who adored HIS DARK MATERIALS, but read it yourself and give it to him in a few years' time, and he'll love it for what it is: a compelling modern masterpiece.
Rating: Summary: Romeo and Juliet in a White Mercedes Review: This book has to be one of my favorites. I haven't read Pullman before until i spotted the book at Kepler's. The character of Chris Marshall is the poster boy of lovelorn young men and Jenny is a riot grrl. The book is enchanting and very well written. The plot has many unsuspecting twists and suspenseful chapters. Not only is it a thriller, it's a beautifully written love story. This should be read by everyone!
Rating: Summary: Disappointing and overly simplistic Review: This book was a real disappointment. There were far too many convenient coincidences, and the short length of time during which Chris goes from "innocent" to quick-to-suspect-the-worst-of-everyone is simply not believable. There was only one point that had a trace of Pullman as I know him from the brilliant "His Dark Materials" trilogy: when the book discusses how the loss of innocence (in the metaphorical, Garden of Eden sense) is not just bad, but also good in that people who lose their innocence then have the knowledge they need to consciously do good in the world. The book is also manipulative in that it opens with the sentence: Chris met the girl he was going to kill..... and then does not follow through with a conclusion that supports that statement.
