Rating: Summary: Summer Sisters if Great !!! Review: I could not put this book down, and I am not a frequent reader. This book is a perfect summer book. The story about Vix and Caitlin is fun and romantic. I am looking forward to reading something else from Judy Blume. This book sure was excellent.
Rating: Summary: This Book Evokes Memories Review: I read Judy Blume as a little girl and noticed she had a knack for shedding light on subjects one wants desperately to know more about but feel fearful of asking. Here she does it again, with a story for adults about an intense friendship between two young women: Caitlin, a stunning beauty who is unaware of her own worth, and Vix, the smart one who is unaware of her own natural beauty. A supporting character makes a remark that everyone experiences a covetous friendship in junior high, and then we get over it. Some of us never get over it, and Blume illuminates that experience here. Her spare writing style combine with a well-crafted sense of urgency to make this a quick read, and like another reviewer I stayed up late into the night to finish the book. Blume also deftly names parts of the book after song titles from the era the part is set in, making sense of time that much more palpable. Caitlin and Vix meet at age twelve and form a lasting friendship that will change their lives; both their sets of parents also exert tremendous influence on the girls. Blume provides the big picture that allows the reader to look at Caitlin's and Vix's situation more clearly than they can, and although some didn't like her ending, I though it provided neccessary closure. If ever you have experienced an unusually close and life-changing friendship and the attendant heartache, this book can be wonderfully healing.
Rating: Summary: Growing up novel told Blume style Review: I must admit, I am not a strong Judy Blume reader but this book was truly made me appreciate her older works. This book has depth into a 80s coming of age story. I could not put this book down and a few months later, it came back to me for a second read. Her narrative style, with a insightful point of view almost all the characters is original. Her writing technique is wonderful in this and it's down to earth. The story can relate to any teenage girl who's truly interested about her sexuality and friends. This is one of the best reads for anyone during leisure time.
Rating: Summary: Touching One Another's Lives Review: Judy Blume's Summer Sisters is one of those novels that must be read quickly. I couldn't put it down. When was the last time you had to stay up at night to finish a novel? Well, if you read this one you will perhaps find yourself in the same situation. Blume hooks the reader immediately by beginning the novel in the present and then switching to flashbacks. She introduces the reader to twelve year old girls who become life-long friends. We follow Vix and Caitlin into their thirties, and we learn about the trials and tribulations of coming-of-age females and their families. Although it appears that Caitlin's effect on Vix is much stronger than Vix's effect on Caitlin, the novel is an excellent example of how lives are changed by the people that cross our paths. This is not a great book of deep literature, but it is pleasant and entertaining. An important point to consider when choosing this book is the age bracket of the person reading it. I think it is dangerous for a novelist such as Blume to write an adult novel when she is known for her books for young adults. I certainly would not want to give this book to my 15 year old daughter to read because of the explicit nature of the sex scenes. Initially, that is why I purchased the novel. I am glad that I read it first. However, that is just my opinion. As an adult I thoroughly enjoyed the novel, and I loved the manner in which the story was told. It's a great summer novel. Enjoy!
Rating: Summary: Loved it! Review: I really enjoyed this book. Congrats, Judy, for a job well-done! Although, I must say that I would have been VERY disappointed to read about the "Summer Sisters" ending BEFORE I even finished reading the book.... I'd recommend this to those writing reviews: Please try not to give away too much of the story, especially the end... it ruins it for those who haven't read it.
Rating: Summary: Summer Sisters: trash or class? Review: I picked up Summer Sisters in a second-hand book shop the other day because I vaguely remembered having read Forever. And I sure was glad I did. Summer sisters could not be counted as 'great literature' due to its superficial handling of the main characters friendship, but it is an extremely good book and I enjoyed it very much. Edgy and exciting, its sex scenes are descriptive without being banal or pornographic, and the personalities and motives of most of the characters are explored via the use of sub-chapters. I consider this method to be extremely successful,as it adds depth and different perspectives to the situations and relationships in the book. This novel restored my faith in the possibilities of modern fiction to delight, entertain and provoke thought. Definitely a classy and worthwhile addition to the Blume's list of successful works.
Rating: Summary: A Great Beach read ..... Review: If you've ever read Blume growing up this is the book for you. It's an easy and engrossing read. You'll find yourself caught up in this book and it's characters. As Blume has always done you will find a part of you somewhere in this book. Whether it be a spoiled child, lost college student, the bond of a strong friendship or miss guided adult somewhere you will find a hint of you. I couldn't put this book down (at the time I had an infant, was working fulltime and had a house to tend to and very little sleep I found the time and read it w/in 3 days) Grab this for the beach and relax. You'll enjoy it if you'd ever read Blume before.
Rating: Summary: Older Judy Blume books are preferable Review: This book isn't exactly satisfying. I have read better Judy Blume books I would say. In the beginning it caught my attention of how Caitlin was going to marry Bru, as forshadowed as Vix's first and old lover. However, at the end of the book, out of nowhere, the story quickly jumped and exposed the hidden infatuation that Bru has had towards Caitlin. There were no revealing clues in the body of the book. Throughout the whole book, it basically tells of Vix and Bru's "great" and "undying" love for each other. What happened? But maybe that's how love in real life is.. Vix and Cailtin's friendship wasn't exactly strong. Neither was there a special bond between them, I felt. At times, neither one of them would remember the other. I expected more from their friendship as the novel is titled, "Summer Sisters". The back cover of the book exaggerated. Caitlin didn't exactly "betray" Vix. But maybe I'm the one who misunderstood the concept of the so-called "betrayal" which occured. "Summer Sisters," is a readable book, but I wouldn't say it's a great book. Despite the eye-catching prologue and the not-so-great ending, I would say it's a not-bad novel. I had expected more from Judy however, but maybe because this book is an adult novel which was purposely for a different taste. Truly, I like her older books such as, "Are you there God, it's me Margaret," which had an innocent appeal. In my mind, that book was a true classic, as such were her other YA books. Another thing, younger readers, around the age of 10 and a bit older, has read this book too! This astonished me great, for I felt the theme and content of this book was quite inappropriate for the younger readers.
Rating: Summary: My favorite!!! Review: This is my favorite Judy Blume novel, as well as my favorite book of ALL times. This is an EXCELLENT novel of two best friends. You won't be able to put it down! I laughed and cried! Read it and then let a friend borrow it, you will both talk about it for weeks!
Rating: Summary: a true must for all women Review: Any woman who ever had a best girlfriend can relate to this story. Every duo of best friends has a Caitlin and a Vix. I was surprised to realize which one I was. Vix is shy and quiet and Caitlin is a free spirit. When Caitlin, a girl Vix hardly knows, invites her to spend the summer with her on Martha's Vineyard, Vix's life is changed forever. The book follows the girls from the time they're twelve-- the year of the invitation-- to their twenties. Then, out of the blue, Caitlin calls Vix to say she's getting married. Vix doesn't want to go, but feels she must, to find out what happened during the last summer they spent together. At the wedding, Vix's life is again forever changed.
