Rating: Summary: Unbeleivably well done, superb writing! Review: How do you describe a book that is so well done, as this one is! It is really unbelievable that an author could write a book so accurate and interesting! Susan's journey from childhood to womanhood, from shallow thinking to deep is so enormously hard to illustrate with words, but Ann Rinaldi has the idea down pat! So few people ever look at the southern belle era as corrupt and evil, we look upon it as a fairytale life, with ladies and gentleman dancing elegantly in an enormous ballroom with chandeliers and silken gowns, but there were so many other things going on at this point, just as Ann Rinaldi points out. The slavery, the mistresses, and gossiping were also a part of this time, and she has shown this without using biterness or anger, in a lovely tale of a young girl who falls in love with a yankee. Susan's trials with her mother, brother, and friends, not to mention the ladies of Richmond society were so realistically thought out, there was no fictional magic that made her problems disappear with the wave of a wand and a fairy godmother which made the book all the more appealing to me, and it's characters more real, they almost seemed as if they existed! If you're interested in Historical Fiction, especially the civil war era, this is the perfect book for you to read, the facts are all told in detail, mixed in with a great plot!

Rating: Summary: My absolute favorite book! Review: Ann has come away with writing another spectacular book! I just love the way she takes Susan's witty character and transforms the girl into a woman who wants to stand for what she believes in, even though she does have to hurt someone to do what's right.

Rating: Summary: Definately one of Ann Rinaldi's best! Review: First of all, I'll say that Susan is my favorite character Ann RInaldi has ever created. She has spunk, intelligence, and bravery, and she isn't like a lot of 19th century women who sat home sewing all day.I loved this book and flew through it even though it was pretty long. This book, set in the Civil War-from the Southern point of view, is about a fourteen year old girl (that'd be Susan) and her disfunctional family. Her mom has a few screws loose and is really cruel, her older, dashing brother Lucien is the talk of the town because of the gambling house he owns, and her father has got some secrets of his own as well. I loved this book because of its drama and fast pace. I recommend reading this book at least twice- it wa sbetter on the second time and I picked up clues that I'd missed before that unlocked some of the family's secrets.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful, Amazing Book Review: This book was the first book I read by Ann Rinaldi. I read it all the way through with out putting it down once it was so good. After I finished it I went on to read every other book she has written and she is now my favorite athor of all time. All her books are wonderful but this is the best of the best. When I read it I became Susan Chilmark and I even cried when... well, I won't tell you what happens.
