Summary: A fav!
Review: I loved The Last Silk Dress so much!! It was the first Ann Rinaldi I have read, and have been hooked on her since. The novel starts right in 1861, when the first battle of Bull Run occurs. Susan is mad because her eccentric mother won't let her join any sewing circles to help the south out. She knows it has something to do with her brother Lucien not fighting for the Cause. As time goes by, she discovers a lot more about her brother, her wild famil, and even herself. And even though she thinks of herself as a "true southern belle" in the midst of war and battles, she evn falls in love with a Yankee! Can you imagine?

Summary: You won't be able to put it down!
Review: The Last Silk Dress is by far one of my favorite books. I went to the library one day and I came across this book. I went home and I could not put it down. It is a romantic, yet historical story of a 14-year-old who is confused. She wants to help with "the Cause" but her mother won't allow it until Susan Chilmark volunteers to collect dresses for a flag. Her mother is proud of her for once is Susan's life. She leaves one day and has a unfortunate meeting with her brother, Lucien. Lucien is the talk of the town. Susan keeps in touch with Lucien behind her mother's back. I dont want to give to much of the story away but it is a must read. I would give it ten stars but the most was five. Go right now and get yourself a copy!

Summary: Good book but not the best
Review: The Last Silk Dress was my 2nd Ann Rinaldi book and the pattern is obvious in all her stories: a 14 yr old girl with a distorted family goes off to find her identity and finds some guy in the mean time. While it was a good read, it wasn't as great as the Fifth of March. Where Rachel had good solid reasons for taking a stand against the people she loved, Susan seemed silly and impudent to keep going against her brother Lucien who has done so much for her just to commit a childish act of rebellion against the South by setting the silk dress balloon free. She seemed rude and ungrateful at times and the ending didn't tie up all the loose ends, The story seems to end right after the climax much like the Fifth of March, but atleast the Fifth of March provided a likeable and reasonable heroine.

Summary: you'll want to read it again and again
Review: I actually got this book out from the library the first time I read it, but after that, I knew I wanted to buy it. Its a wonderful bbok, very interesting and well-thought out with a smooth plot and studied detail. The main character is interesting but a bit spoiled in the beggining, but as the book progresses, you'll be delighted with the changes. (I won't give them away) Its well worth its price.

Summary: A Great Book!
Review: This book is about a 14-15 year old girl named Susan Dobson Chilmark. She lives in Richmond with her half crazy mother and her shamed brother is the talk of Richmond. Her father, one of her favorite people, is off in the war building a ship for the Confederates.Susan wants to do something more than sew for the Confederates, so she and her friend collect silk dresses to make a balloon. After she meets one of her brothers friends, she realizes that what she did was wrong and now she wants to destroy what she has done. Ann Rinaldi's book carries true facts about the Civil War and she can really weave a good story in with it, too!

Summary: i read this Book every chance i could get! ...
Review: I read this book when i was 9 years old and i loved it! I re-read this book like 1000 times! Susan is an awesome character.....i love how she would not let being a girl in the 19th century slow her down! this is one of those books that you will always remember! this was the first book I ever read by Ann Rinaldi, and ever since then i cannot get enough of her books! Susan's life is very complicated and at times i admit she can be courageous, and intelligent, but she can also be childish , and sensitive. Her Mother, is somewhat eccentric, and definatley cruel. She makes Susan feel she can never live up to her late sister. Her brother , Lucien, a dashing man , becomes Susan's very own protecter after not seeing her for years. He is the talk of the town , because he will not join the army, which hurts the social life of the family. Susan's "father" a good man with a troubled past, does everything in his power to please his wife, and forgets some of the others in his family while doing so. Susan believes she can help the cause and please her mother by making a hot air balloon to spy on the union. While collecting silk to make the balloon with Susan's world is racked, after meeting her brother Susan learns of her family's horrible past, and loses 2 people very dear to her to the war. i know every one who has ever read this book has loved it and so will all people who will read it in the future. :-)

Summary: Another excellent book from Ann Rinaldi
Review: This is one of my favorite books of all time. Susan is the typical Southern gal. She loves the South and everything it stands for, until after a little ( not really little ) event comes by and she meets up with her brother, who is no longer in the family. ( You'll see why ) Her brother is quite different. He's an outcast because he is not fighting in the war and because he also runs gambling place. Her brother has connections with nice things up north like food, nice clothes, and a great Yankee guy who is interested in the much talked about Susan. Great book, if you like Rinaldi books or other historical books.

Summary: Gripping and well-spun
Review: I have to say that this book inspired me to persue writing like never before. I've always been interested with history, but Susan's alarming "wakeup call" created a story fitting for any Civil War historian and buff alike. While it was mysterious and intrigueing, it also provided a look at the un-romantic side of the Civil War. Southern belles have always been portrayed differently, I think this is a wonderful change...
