Rating: Summary: A BOOK I COULD NOT PUT DOWN!!! Review: I love this story about 14 year-old Sarah Chilmark. Suspence, melancholy, this book has everything! It is a great histroical-fiction book and I loved every moment of it, from when she finds her brother, to the time she destroys the balloon, to the time when she goes up to live with her Yankee boyfriend! Happy Reading, Jaclyn Casavant
Rating: Summary: A book I could not put down Review: This is one of my all-time favorite books. The story of Susan Chilmark. Susan goes through many changes in this book she meets her brother for the first time he has been estranged from the family since she was a baby. Her mother is known as the town nutcase she has many problems that Susan can not deal with. With her father away at war how can she handle her mother? But Susan does all that she can to help the cause for the confederacy. She goes around with her friend Connie and collects silk dresses for a ballon to spy on the yankees. But it seems that this ballon is tearing Susan apart. Susan has had many new and exciting experiences with her brother Lucien she has met a yankee and a new friend. To find out more read this book. I recomend it to anyone and everyone. It is my favorite of Ann Rinaldi's books! Enjoy it
Rating: Summary: This is a very good book. Review: This is a very good book about a Southern girl's struggle for identity during the Civil War. Her brother and father think the Yankees' views are correct, yet they help the Southern cause. Though she agrees to help the South by sewing a hot-air balloon, she later finds herself uncertain as to which side is better
Rating: Summary: a wonderful, truly entertaining, sad and educational story Review: I read this book when I was the same age as the heroine of this book, Susan, and I absolutely LOVED it!! I bought this book that it was just "another civil war story" but it turned out not to be like any other book I've read before, and certainly not like any other civil war book I've read. If someone told you the plot of "the last silk dress" you would at first think it was totally cliche, and it kind of is, but it still seperates itself from so many other books like it and that is what makes it truly great!! You learn so much about this book and it is at times very moving. Anyway, my advice is to read this book!!!! REally!!
Rating: Summary: BEST BOOK IN HISTORY OF OUR WORLD Review: To concisely say this, this truly is the BEST BOOK IN THE WORLD. If you don't read it you'll truly be missing out on a book that you'll regret not having read. This is my absolute favorite book and I've read tons of thousands of books in my lifetime, considering the fact that I've only been alive for 14 years. I loved this book so much that after I first read it I tried writing a sequel to it because there isn't one. I was only in 6th grade at the time so I ended up quitting because when you're in the 6th grade no one is a very good writer. This book is about a girl named Susan Chilmark. Her father adores her, her mother hates her, and she has a brother she hasn't seen forever. Until one day when she is running about in her brother Lucien's, her brother, old clothes trying to hear more about the war, The Civil War. Susan then runs into Lucien and almost gets whipped by him because he thinks she is a boy who stole his old clothes that she was wearing. One thing leads to another and Lucien and Susan become good friends. In this book Susan falls in love with her brother's Yankee friend named Timothy at age 14!!!!!!!! Susan goes behind her mothers back and makes a balloon out of silk dresses that Lucien helps her collect. Lucien gets these most exquiste dresses from... prostetutes!!!! Lucien soon teaches Susan though that the Cause isn't such a good one. Susan regrets making the balloon and asks Timothy if he really cares about her to give her balloon to the Yankees. He does and because of that Susan has to flee to the North with Timothy, and sort of unfortunately Lucien too. Poo!
