To help herself deal with this she asks Tim to go on the ship which the hot air balloon is on . This was supposed to be used to spy on the Yankees. Tim is supposed to steal the balloon.

Summary: one of my top 10
Review: I first read The Last Silk Dress in 7th grade and now I'm in 9th. I make it a point to read this book once a year. I can fly through this book in 2 days tops. It's amazing the way this book reads. The Last Silk Dress got me caught and now I have read all of her books except the most recent ones. I have never heard one negative comment on this book, and I'll be raving about it for years to come

Summary: This is the best book I have ever read!
Review: I thought this was an excellent book. It is a historical fiction book, which means that it can not be entirely flaky like Sweet Valley books. But it has a lot of the excitement that makes you want to keep reading. Not just a boring fact book.

Summary: Exellent!
Review: I'm not yet finished with this book, but I can hardly put it down. I was quite disappointed that one of these reviews told the ending. Anyway, exellently written, a captivating tale of a young Southern girl's struggle to survive through the Civil war, as she deals with an abusive mother.

Summary: Completly satisfieing
Review: Susan was a delightful character to follow and learn about. The twists and turns added delightful, or sad parts to the book. This book was one of the best I had read of the Civil war era.

Summary: This book is about the struggles of a teen during war.
Review: Susan Dobson Chikmark's teen years years were filled with some adventure, happieness, and sadness. Susan is the main character of the book "The Last Silk Dress" by Ann Rinaldi. The book is written in the Civil War time period.

One of Susan's adventures was when she met her brother whom she had not seen in fourteen years. His name is Lucien. She was disguised as a boy when she met him because she thought that if she did she would not get picked on. One day she discovered that the Yankees had a spy balloon. She was so amazed that she thought the Confederacy should have a balloon too. So her friend Connie and Susan set out to collect any silk dresses to make the balloon. When they finally went to every house on their side of town they had collected only 75 dresses. She had to turn to Lucien for help.

The sad part of the book was when she found out her father had died. In her father's will it said that the custody of Susan should be turned over to Lucien. The book goes on about how living with Lucien changes Susan's life. Susan has a lot of courage for a fourteen year old. I just wish there was a sequel to the book.

Summary: A Book I Could Not Put Down
Review: The Last Silk Dress was one of Rinaldi's best work. The story is about Susan Chilmark and how she torn between her love for the Confederate and the Union. But she soon has to make a choice which some how in one way or the other hurts some she loves. It is a beautiful story and very suspens full. I really love The Last Silk Dress and all of Ann Rinaldi's books.

Summary: Wonderful!! I wish there was a sequel.
Review: The Last Silk Dress is my favorite book by Ann Rinaldi, which is saying quite a lot since I've read all of her books and loved them all. Unlike Rinaldi's later books, the main character, Susan Chilmark, is entirely fictitious, but I think she is Rinaldi's strongest character to date. Susan is headstrong from the very beginning, but she undergrows a radical change as the book goes on. Although, Susan was never the stereotypically innocent (or conniving) southern belle, she gains a genuine perspective on where her life should be headed and what she, individually should be fighting for. Then she must make a decision in order to face the consequences of her earlier actions (and when Susan makes a decision, she pulls out all the stops.) Mix in an abusive mother, a brother who was kicked out of the house, and the Yankee artist who sneaks through the rebel lines and you are left with a remarkably fresh perspective on the Civil War. Read it.
