Summary: Dissapointing
Review: This was really very dissapointing. I waited for the stupid book for THREE YEARS, he could have writen it a little faster! Then when I finally read it I didn't like it. The main agenda of the story didn't bother me nor did the fact that he set God up as basicly an old senile fool who had tricked everyone into believing he was the Creator. It didn't bother me that Lyra and Will fell in love-it felt right and it sort of seemed like they're older than they are. I hate it when authors kill off characters that you have become attached to in this or perevious books, he did. I could have dealt with this though, if the end had been satisfying and what I wanted. He didn't have to end it that way, a little change in the plot/dialogue and it could have been a happily ever after story(I love happy endings-if the end is bad so is the book. The end is the end so if you're going to and it you have to have a nice one.) The end was just terible I wanted them to live happily ever after. If the ending was better I would give it four stars-it just doesn't deserve them now. No matter what I say you HAVE to read it if you've read the other books-there is no way you couldn't, you need to know howhe finnishes it. The first book was much better and the second was good but felt fast. The third just can't compare to the others, it seemed rushed and a bit undeveloped.

Summary: good book but not for kiddies
Review: this was a good book but its not for kiddies. i liked it but its not for staunch religous beleivers. because it discusses the idea that "god" which is just a strong angel created a world thats called the world of the dead (worse and i mean around the area of 20 or 30 times worse than hell) and your stuck there forever. and it also has content and idaes for much older readers than elementary students (when you go "ewwwwww yuck sick" at kissing)(and it goes a little farther than that)(make that alot farther) other wise its a great book.

Summary: Devastating and heart-breaking
Review: It is very difficult to review this book without giving out any 'spoilers', but I will try. This is the third and (unfortunately) final part in Philip Pullman's masterful "Dark Materials" trilogy, in which the two heroes, Will and Lyra turn thirteen and travel to the land of the dead to find the shade of Roger, the kitchen-boy whom Lyra set out to rescue from the 'Gobblers' in the first book of the series. The plan is to use Will's Subtle Knife (hence the title of the second book) to open a gate into the land of the dead. Meanwhile, Dr Mary Malone, a particle physicist from our own world and specialist in fundamental physics and dark matter, finds herself in another world where evolution favoured diamond-shaped skeletons instead of spinal columns (as in our world). The book leads slowly to the final conflict between Lyra's father and the being known as Metatron (the "god" worshipped by christians). This is a beautiful but very cruel book, with the most vivid description of true love (between Will and Lyra of course) contained in any book written in the English language. Any christian fanatics criticising this book for portraying the love between a boy and a girl obviously know nothing about what it is to be a teenager wracked by such powerful emotions. Unfortunately the author, Philip Pullman, decided to deny the two main characters a happy ending, leaving this 26-year old reader devastated, heart-broken and in tears. You have been warned.

Review: I enjoyed the Amber Spyglass, though I believe that Mr. Pullman could have explained some things better. Like the bomb for instance. The only reason for that to even be in the book at all is to blow a hole in the Land of the Dead. Other than that I feel the story was rather good. If you have problems with material which appears to be anti-religious you probably shouldn't read this book since all you'll do is remember the parts you don't like and miss the rest of the story which would be wrong. I have read a review farther down which explains it all much better than I can, but to save you from looking for it heres the basic point: The almighty in the book isn't really god; the DUST itself is. Think about it. It's everywhere, in everything, attracted to people even. In fact Lord Asriel is trying to save the DUST, and destroy the false-almighty and/or Metatron(which ever is really behind the evil). Talk about an inverted version of Paradise Lost. Now there are plenty of things I don't agree with in this book (being Catholic and all), but none of these seem to be important enough to keep someone from fully enjoying this book, so long as they don't spend their time focusing on the controversial things.

Summary: A really strange but good ending
Review: Phillip Pullman has done it again and has created a masterpiece but even masterpieces have flaws. Lyra and will venture into the deep unknown dead to search for Roger and Will's father. I think Pullman should write a fourth book explaining the end of it all. I am really shocked as to what happened to Pantalimon and Kirjiva. And I also don't know who the female angel is, her name is too hard to spell. She is good thought to have been with the two daemons. The Golden Compass was the better of the three because it wasn't as rushed as The Amber Spyglass but because it was so good, five and a half stars should be deserved for the Amber Spyglass. I really enjoyed reading the triology though i wish that Phillip Pullman would explain the future of Lyra and the Republic of Heaven because I'm always dreaming of what happens to Lyra and Will.

Summary: One of my favs
Review: The Amber Spyglass was soooooo good. I was shocked at the ending, Phillip Pullman really gave this triology a blast at the end. I could barely put it down. Also, The Golden Compass and The Subtle Knife were awsome too. Lyra really goes through a lot and I was amazed at how Pullman gave the last book a good push. But I would like to see how Lyra and Will end up in the future and what happens to them.

Review: By his own admission, Pullman attempts to make a case for the destruction of God. He uses his talents to enter himself into a most precarious position by pitting himself against the God of the universe and his own wish to sell books. His agenda is to attempt to discredit Christianity and therefore should never be likened to C.S. Lewis.

Summary: An Enormously Powerful Book
Review: This is an amazing book. I have never seen emotions displayed in a book so powerfully as in the Amber Spyglass. Pullman pulls you into the story even more effectively than his first two books. I was crying at the end. Whoever can only see the twists on Heaven and God are obviously not looking far enough into the emotions of this book. I believe in God, but fantasy that provides new views is a welcome addition to my library. The love in this book overwhelms all the other points. Two angels that are Will's brief companions have such a passionate love for each other that they can communicate over long distances. Lyra ventures into the world of the dead-and betrays the one she loves most-to apologize to Roger. Even Mrs. Coulter's icy heart is melted by a new love for her daughter. In the powerful ending, Lyra learns to put others before herself-no matter how terrible the price is.

Summary: A great conclusion for the best fantasy trilogy ever!
Review: The adventures of Lyra and Will are further continued in the 3rd and last book in the His Dark Material trilogy. In this one, Lyra and Will travel to the underground world of the dead, and to a battlefield filled with races of all kinds, heavenly and humanly. In this, we learn about Lord Asriel's struggle against...get this...God. The war against God starts and ends in this book. The ending to this book kind of depressed me since I grew fond of the characters in the other 2, but it is a great ending and a great book none the less.

Review: said it is recommended for 13 or older, I'm 11 and I've read it. The Amber Spyglass is a wonderful book, but slightly confusing at first, when they talk about daemons. I heard about the series when there was a "best book" contest where I lived, and this book was on the list. Recommended 10 and over.
