Rating: Summary: Journeys End Review: The final volume of "His Dark Material" trilogy offers readers more, than they could expect from a final volume in a trilogy. Most 3rd volumes are Endgames. We allready know the disposition of heroes and villains and although there can be some questions unanswerd, basically, they rarely pose completely new situations and problems for main characters. Not so here. I won't say what Lira and Will faced in their journey here, because I really don't want to ruin the surprise. I'd only like to remind readers that this series is no ordinary one, even in its structure - can you remember another trilogy, which didn't give us one of the main characters (Will) untill volume 2? There are also: an assasin, several new races, revelations about the nature of Spectres, a grand battle with the Kingdom of Heaven... Well, what are you still reading the review for? Click the "Buy" button, allready! You won't regret it!
Rating: Summary: An Awesome Book, but Review: I must agree, Pullman does preach. And unlike some people who preach Christianity with zaelotry, he preaches against Christianity. I can't say I disagree with him too much, because of my beliefs, but nevertheless, it's obvious what Pullman's message is without the constant preaching and it does get uncomfortable a few times. A few moments also left me disappointed. One would really think that Father Gomez could so much more, and I was expecting with dread what was going to happen and then all of a sudden, it's all over without much effort. That part was a little unconvincing. The ending also left me longing for more. After all the stories put together piled up in the end and you were just awaiting that climax... and then it was over. The ending of the story could've suited one book separately. But the greatness of the seriest was kind of swallowed up by the unoriginality of the finale. Of course, it was dramatic and Pullman's writing nearly drew tears out of my eyes (and I'm not the touchy type either), but despite it all the ending seemed unconvincing. That is why I gave this book 4 stars. But those few moments, only 10-20 minutes of reading in total were nothing compared to the thrill of the rest of the story. Every chapter was great and I could hardly find a place to stop, so I had to stay up until 4 am, 5 am, 6 am (luckily, it was Xmas vacation), the last night of my reading I didn't even go to sleep to finish off the book. Pullman says he got his ideas from a multitude of other books. Well, perhaps. But the originality with which he put this world together, with which he created something so totally different and yet so totally the same (a make-like), is genius.
Rating: Summary: The last in the series with a dramatic finish Review: The third and best book in the trilogy. The book is very serious and not as "nice" as the first. With very intense situations, Lyra and Will have even more adventures than in the first two. You will love the dramatic ending to the novel, and will make no book look as good as these.
Rating: Summary: Magnificent Ending to a GroundBreaking Trilogy Review: The Amber Spyglass in my opinion was better than the first two books combined!! And to all those people who think Pullman is attacking God and Christianity let me corrrect you. He said in an interview that The Authority (presumably God) is not the Christian God. The Authority, Pullman said, is the god that all the murderers and terrorists blames on the things they do. Pullman said that if there really was a God who told people to kill and do things like 9/11 he should be overthrown. So as you see he is in no way attacking the Christian Faith. BUY THIS BOOK!!!!
Rating: Summary: A overly-long book at slow pace Review: I have to say, I absolutely loved "The Golden Compass" when I read it a month ago, and I was a little disapointed with "The Subtle Knife", but I really did think that "The Amber Spyglass" was a overly-done book, no offense to Mr. Pullman. Pan and Lyra don't really have that "connection" anymore, which is what I think made me like BOOK 1 in the HIS DARK MATERIALS trilogy. READ "THE GOLDEN COMPASS" and maybe you'll like all 3 books-don't let my opinion ruin yours of these books! Just don't expect much from books 2&3 if you're comparing them to book 1.
Rating: Summary: Spectacular ending to a great Trilogy Review: The Amber Spyglass is the spectacular conclusion to the Dark Materials trilogy with awesome sub-plots weaving together to make the perfect main story. After teaming up with the Bear king Iorek Byrinson, Will manages to rescue Lyra from Mrs. Coulter and repair the Subtle Knife. Now Will and Lyra with the help of two Gallvispain spies must journey into the world of the dead to find Lyra's friend Roger and free the dead's souls. I liked The Amber Spyglass for the feeling that you're a character that's right there in the story -- feeling the painful pull at your heart as you enter the world of the dead. Another great attribute of this book is the deversity of the characters. The only word I can think of that comes even remotely close to describing this book is spectacular.
Rating: Summary: neat book Review: I found the book The Amber Spyglass, by Philip Pullman to be really exciting. It is a mixture of fantasy and adventure. The reason why I chose this book is because I enjoy fantasy because it can take you to places that you have never even dreamed of. One of my favorite quotes is "because he is Will" on pg. 82, because it shows the trust Lyra has in Will and she knew that he was going to save her. Together they can accomplish anything. It shows they make a really great team despite the people who are after them, and the question about the thesis of what dust really is. One of the themes in this book is never give up and you can go far with teamwork. I definitely agree with the theme. I think those are some really good pointers for dealing with life that was put in the book by Philip Pullman. I believe that those are good points to go by in real life. I try to go by them. To me a little team work can go a long way. In conclusion, I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to read fantasy. It really is a book that will take you on a magical ride. I would recommend this book because I think Philip Pullman wrote this book, he really let his imagination go wild. It really captured my mind and made me so I could not stop reading the book. It is a book that is great to read and it is something I am sure you would enjoy.
Rating: Summary: Demon-possessed kids anyone? Review: Mr Pullman has created a truly insideous work that glorifies Satanism and undermines the source of purity in our world. Unfortunately this book has captured the imagination of many young people who are oblivious to the concepts of worldview and the schemes of a corrupt author. Parents should strongly investigate this series, considering the author himself says that Satan is actually an advocate of wisdom and freedom.
Rating: Summary: Disorganized thought Review: My main problem with this book is that it left too many things unexplained... like if God was dying, then what was there before God? The ideas that were put forth in the first two books led me to think that the author would have some magnificent explanation and ending. I was severely disappointed. The book was not cleverly written; the author seemed to be able to form the beginnings of a story but could not take us to a satisfactory conclusion. It was an irregularly woven tale.
Rating: Summary: A painful third installement Review: Much as I enjoyed the first 2 of His dark material, I found the third one overly long, overly complex with parts too similar, in my view, to "Out of the silent planet". I totally lost interest in Mary Malone's doings and there were just too many parallel stories and plots, I became impatient with it all. Lyra's motivation to find Roger simply doesn't stand up in the face of what she has to go through (because she DREAMED about him?) and it becomes implausible and unbelievable. Overall disappointing and too ambitious. I'm surprised at the outcry by the Christian readers though. What about freedom of speech?? Isn't someone ALLOWED to write against Christianity? You don't have to agree but please let writers write what they will. I don't believe Pullman's books will corrupt anybody!
