Rating: Summary: Best book ever!! Review: The Amber Spyglass is brilliantly written so that it keeps you reading till the end. Pullman makes all the parts in this book either scary, romantic, adventurous, sad, or joyful. People die and there are important battles. I won't give anything away so you can find out yourself about everything, but there are many differences between this and the first two books.
Rating: Summary: Thought Provoking book Review: Let me first say that I am not an avid reader of fantasy. But this book, like the other two books in the "His Dark Materials" series always kept me reading. The author has woven many complex themes and plot lines together to form a colorful and interesting story. While "The Amber Spyglass" is a fantasy, the author, Philip Pulman, has written it in a way that the story seems every bit as realistic and believable as one without the magic. The plot is not just spells and broomsticks, but involves themes such as parallel universes and comparisons for souls. However, the ending was not as good as it was in the other two books and seems to drag out for a bit long. But this doesn't make much diffeence compared to the rest of the book. I thouroughly enjoyed "The Amber Spyglass" but would suggest reading it directly after the other two books. I read other books in between and forgot some of the smaller details mentioned previously in the other two books in the trilogy. FInally, I would recommend "The Amber SPyglass" to anyone over the age of 11. I don't think kids 11 and under would appreciate some of the themes and parts may get a bit scary.
Rating: Summary: Seriously, folks... Review: Okay, first off I loved the book. I really hated The Subtle Knife, so I almost didn't read this one, but the suspense finally had me buying and reading. My argument to the people who say that this book is sacreligious is the same as my argument to anti-Harry Potter people: GET OVER IT. I myself am a religious person and I saw no wrong in this book. Sure, it deals with killing God, but it is a work of fiction. FICTION. According to my handy little dictionary, it means "literature in which the plot and the characters are imaginary", not "something written to make unsuspecting readers convert". Now, on to what I actually thought... This book was very well written and was a satisfying ending to the series. I agree with some of the other reviewers in that the ending was a little weak, but I liked this book so much better than the one before it that I can forgive that little problem. I definitely recommend this book.
Rating: Summary: I loved it and wish there were more to read in the series!! Review: The action-packed last book, The Amber Spyglass, of an AWESOME trilogy, was one of those books I'll never forget. Throughout the book, different events are happening and like all good books, the author leaves you hanging at the end of every chapter. I couldn't put this book down! For anyone who loves to read as much as I do, I would definetly recommend this book and the rest of the series. The characters in the book are so well developed that you feel you've known them for a long time. The religious aspect of this book was a bit different to put it mildly, but if you aren't willing to accept other viewpoints on religious happenings then just don't read books that will upset you!! The ending was so perfect but TOTALLY unexpected!! I must admitt I cried a lot and didn't want it to end the way it did, probably because I love a good, happy ending. When i finished I found myself wishing for more of Lyra and Will and especially Pan who was my favorite character throughout the book. If you love fantasy, adventure stories this book is for you.
Rating: Summary: Fascinating but slightly disappointing Review: I read the first two books in Pullman's trilogy, "The Golden Compass" and "The Subtle Knife," a while ago, and having to wait years for the final volume nearly drove me crazy. "The Amber Spyglass" was just as riveting as the first two. Pullman has a great style and is extremely inventive. The way he wove the revelations of the first two books into a cogent plot of "what's really going on" was ingenious. However, I didn't quite like the ending. I'm a fan of storybook endings where everybody's happy and this didn't - exactly - happen in this book. The way it plays out makes perfect sense, and I spent the last third of the book going, "oooooooh!" as the connections hit me, but some points of the ending irked me. I have heard rumors that Pullman plans a followup to the trilogy, and I await it eagerly. In other words, if you read the first two books you of course should read this one to know how it ends - the engaging story is certainly worth your time. If you are considering reading the trilogy (which should unquestionably be read in order, or it makes no sense at all), proceed with caution. There are incredible but surprising ideas in all three books, and the ending is not to be expected. All in all though, it's a very good series.
Rating: Summary: ICK! Review: First book in the series...very good. Interesting ideas. Second book....well, it wasn't as good as the first. This one....absolutely [stunk]! I'm sorry but I was expecting better! Not only did I find this book offensive to my religion, the ending was just plain stupid. Waging a war on God? Stupid. Winning? Even more stupid. I was disgusted with this book. (and just in case you're wondering...I'm actually 15 and I've read a lot of books so I would hope my opinion would count for something.)
Rating: Summary: 'The Amber Spyglass' Review: This book is an amazing conclusion to Philip Pullman's triology, 'His Dark Materials.' This book has an astounding story line and great development through the whole novel. I found my motivation for reading it slightly different than the first two books, 'The Golden Compass' and 'The Subtle Knife,' because this was it; everything that happened was crucial to the outcome of the plot and Will and Lyra's lives come to conclude. This book was brillant and wonderful to read. My only negative remark is that this book is the last book, and I'll miss Lyra and Will.
Rating: Summary: Mesmerizing, but disappointing Review: Like the previous two books in this trilogy, "The Amber Spyglass" is a mesmerizing read. It draws you in and refuses to let go. The plot was wonderfully interwoven with symbolism and subtle humour, the characters are fresh and lifelike, and the overall writing is almost surreal. So why did I not rate this book 5 stars? The ending. All right, yes, the ending was beautifully written - no question about that. It was, however, a rather weak ending to such a strong trilogy. It was so terribly sad it made me cry, and I was disappointed that Pullman chose to end his series with a whimper rather than a bang. In my opinion, this ending is the coward's way of finishing the trilogy (or maybe I just like happy endings). Nevertheless, it was meant to tug at the heartstrings and so it did. It was, really, unbearably sad, and made me think about what became of the characters for far too long afterwards. The religious part I enjoyed, because it isn't a very popular opinion in the world today. The "killing God" angle really was very interesting. To everyone who objects to this book for religious reasons, remember: it's called freedom of speech. If you don't like it, don't read it. Be forewarned now that the book presents controversial views of the Church. All in all, a book worth reading. Just be sure to have some Kleenex for the end.
Rating: Summary: A Book of Human Nature Review: Wow! This is one of my all-time favorite books! The Amber Spyglass is so gripping - it will keep even reluctant readers hooked. Even though it's a fantasy, the characters' feelings are so real. The emotions in this book are very touchy - when there's sorrow, you might cry, when there's joy, you might laugh along. There's also betrayal, innocence, and love. I think it's a deep exploration of the human nature in a metaphored alien form. The plot of this book is just fascinating. There's suspense at every turn. The complexity of the plot is just another hook to keep readers satisfied, yet the information is never overwhelming to understand. Lyra and Will are true heros, and together, they defeated the evilness in the world and brought Dust. They are both passionate children who dare to explore the unknown. They have endless courage and bravery, thus giving them their titles as heros. Read this book as soon as you can! Although this book is written for children, adults will enjoy it, too, maybe even more than kids because of the depth of its meanings.
Rating: Summary: The Golden Compass Review: This is the best book I've ever read. Even though it's a fantasy story, its characters are so real. The action never stops, and there's suspense at every turn. Plus, real heroine qualities are revealed by Lyra. Her bravery, courage, and compassion will not only grip you, but inspire you as well. This book also has hidden meanings that reveal human nature in alien forms. Everyone, even adults, should read this wonderful, excellent book. Believe me - you will love it and never want to put it down once you start. This book also causes you to feel real emotions. When there's heartbreak, it's real, and you may even cry. There's also love and betrayal - all in all, this book is very touchy. It's basically a book of true emotions and the human nature. Read it as soon as you can!
