Summary: Sometimes I sing, sometimes I write
Review: Ooops she did it again. Britney and Lynne have spun a tale that will be inspiring to all young parents and their kids. I felt a tinge of Britney's own personal experience in this novel. It is clear that Britney was born to make her Mom happy, even though she sometimes drives her crazy and she just can't sleep. Britney is lucky, she's a star. I shouldn't be the one to let you be the last to know, but this book will make you stronger than yesterday. It is well written and clearly balances the line between saccharine and sincerity. I hope this isn't her last book -- write it Britney, one more time.

Summary: Horrendous
Review: This was absolutely the worst book I ever picked up. In fact, it was so bad that I had to wash my hands a few times and then brush my teeth to get rid of the bad taste it left in my mouth. It was the stereotypical rags-to-riches story with a girl who has big dreams but is so poor she feels she can't ever meet them, when, lo and behold, her dreams come true. This is like a bad, childishly-written version of a VC Andrews novel. It's something that never should have been published, yet somehow was lucky enough to make it past the editor. And we all know why. It's because Britney wrote it. Had it been some average schmo, this book would have never even seen the printing press. Just goes to show what the priorities are in this day of age, but we know it doesn't matter to Britney - as far as I'm concerned, she's smiling smugly at the vast amounts of money being raked in from this little endeavor.

In a nutshell, just avoid this book. You'll be so happy you did. I'm glad I didn't waste my money on it and instead just read it while at the bookstore. Trust me. If you need a real good dramatic book, check out Dorothy Allison, Alice Walker, or VC Andrews's old books - you'll be so happy you did.

AVOID AT ALL COSTS!

Summary: Pretty good
Review: I wouldn't say that this book is boring or fabulous, it's just fine. Although i'm a huge fan of Britney, and i used to say that everything about her is fabulous, but this book is not really interesting and it's a pretty short story, you can finish it in 2-3 days. You many consider buy STAGES instead of this, STAGES is 10 times better than A MOTHER'S GIFT!!

Summary: Thoughtful postmodern commentary from a pop chanteuse
Review: I bought this book for my eleven year old niece, but decided to read it first, as any responsible adult should do before handing reading material to a child. I was pleasantly surprised to find not only a charming children's story, but a deeper, postmodern analysis of international affairs and human relationships.

Ms. Spears deconstructs the political rhetoric surrounding the Iran-Contra affair and the Carter administration through her deft use of metaphor and allegory. Holly Faye, the novel's protagonist, is a thinly veiled effigy of Oliver North, a central player in the Iran-Contra scandal. Like North, Holly is held hostage by contexts beyond her control and forced to assume responsibility for situations which are beyond her limited scope of power. Spears offers one of the most compelling political analyses to be found in modern young adult fiction.

Ms. Spears also ravages the modern feminist doctrine, asserting instead that women must blaze trails which both honor their matrilineal heritage and assert their female independence from paternal forces. Her solutions to the dilemmas faced by powerful modern females continue to be applicable to this day. In fact, Ms. Spears' recent marriage is only one relevant example of how the strategies she proposes in this novel serve as actionable strategies. In fact, Ms. Spears' marriage itself is just one weapon in her postmodern assault on antiquated views of marriage and family.

I highly recommend this novel to adults and children alike. It will broaden your perspective on relevant social issues as well as historical/political affairs. Ms. Spears proves to be a deft wordsmith and a startlingly deep philosophical mind. I sincerely hope Ms. Spears publishes another novel before the upcoming presidential election with similar lessons for the modern American voter.

Summary: A Mother's Gift
Review: This book is pretty average. I would not say it is a good book for older teens to read because the plot is much too simple. I would recommend this for the preteen age group.

The story is somewhat entertaining, with the main character Holly dreaming of being in a famous music school, Haverty. Holly is accepted into Haverty and begins to realize how much her simple country life at home differs from the lives of the other rich students. There is also the mystery of the scar on her mother Wanda's face, which tells the story of Holly's mysterious past.

Summary: A must for Britney fans but skippable for everybody else.
Review: Fourteen-year-old Holly Faye Lovell has a dream --- she wants to sing, specifically on television, even more specifically on The Haverty's Talent Hour. But how can a poor girl from Biscay, Mississippi who has never even been in an airplane before make her hopes for stardom come true? The answer is contained in A MOTHER'S GIFT, the debut novel from pop sensation Britney Spears.

The story is a pretty simple one; we have all read books like it a thousand times before. Holly is too perfect and sweet and her life in Biscay is free of any pain or worry. She sings in her church choir and has a loyal, loving, hot boyfriend named Tyler. In addition to being all those things and a talented mechanic to boot, it is Tyler who scores her the audition at the prestigious Haverty School of Music, sacrificing their relationship for her ambitions. Holly (of course) aces the audition, even though she has no training and she fumbles through the process. And, of course, Holly is the youngest student ever at the school and given a huge scholarship. Once Holly gets to Haverty, located in cosmopolitan Hattiesburg, she is bunked with Lydia, a beautiful, older and rich student who (of course) underneath it all is unhappy and has substance abuse issues. The girl's adventures together teach them many lessons about life and friendship. Sickly sweet lessons, that is.

A MOTHER'S GIFT is not all bad. Some of the characters are cute and well drawn. In particular, Holly's mother Wanda and the ladies of her sewing circle --- Juanita, Ruby and the others --- are lively and seem like real people. Wanda's side of the story is told through entries of her diary and she comes across as very loving and kind. And then there is the surprise twist at the end of the novel that involves Wanda and the horrible birthmark she has on her face.

I've got to say, I had very very low expectations for this novel. After all, good old Britney is quite good at showing off her navel and dancing like a hoochie, but can she write? She can, but not too well. A must for Britney fans but skippable for everybody else.

Summary: Horrendous
Review: I read this book in 2 days. This book is amazing, it is all about a mother daughter relationship and how they overcome obstacles that are hard for many teenagers. A girl gets a chance to change her life and follow her dreams and her mother is right behind her supporting the decision and keeping her daughter in line. Who cares who wrote the book, it is good. Don't judge it by it's cover. My mom even liked it, and she thinks that Britney is a bad role model. This book is good though, and can be really inspiring.
