Rating: Summary: examples on about life Review: I liked the book because I'm from Zimbabwe, a neighbour of South Africa. It was good to notice that some of the problems that once took place when I was only 5yrs old were writen. Also it has the real that are used by the racists like "keffeir" and the book also gave the teachings that are taught to African children and how they react to them as grow with them. I like so much that I would encourage everyone to read it .
Rating: Summary: this book was okay Review: the book started out slow and was very boring. after the first part was over the story started picking up and the charecters develop a lot better. THis book could really have been better, but all in all it was okay, that's why I gave it 3 stars, but i was leaning towards 4.
Rating: Summary: Good look at an unlikely friendship. Review: This book does a very good job at taking an expansive subject like apartheid and explaining it to teenagers through the two main charaters, Tengo and Frikkie. They are childhood friends on Frikkie's uncle's farm. Tengo is black and Frikkie is white. They separate and get different perspectives of South Africa. When they reunite years later, they see how their lives have changed and how things can't go back. This book helps explain the situation to a person who has no understanding of South Africa's politics. We can also see how white attitudes of apartheid were perpetuated over the years. But it it primarily entertaining.
Rating: Summary: Cool book! Review: Tengo and Frikkie are friends. They've spent every school vacation together. As they grow older, their friendship is strained. Frikkie accepts the condition of his life and wants to quit school to work on the farm. Tengo wants a change. He's curious about the world beyond the farm. It's ironic because Tengo is Black and seems doomed to life of a farmhand and Frikkie is white and the son of the landowner. Frikkie goes away to school. How the two meet again as young adults is a surprising encounter with Tengo having power -- the question is will they both survive?
Rating: Summary: a novel with an easy flow yet intense and heart wrenching Review: This is one of my fav books because of the intense feeling each character goes through;especially Tengo. The feelings they go through are perfectly interpreted by gordon. The best part is one at the end where each goes through somewhat of an epiphanny and realizes something they have for a long time denied..or not faced. A book i would definately recommend reading.....it's also pretty emotional at some parts..you'll cry...i did. so read it!
Rating: Summary: A great social commentary. Review: This book is the chil's version of Alan Paton's classic Cry, The Beloved Country. It is about two friends, Tengo and Frikkie. Frikkie is a Boer and Tengo is descended from the African tribes. But as they grow older, apartheid changes their lives. Tengo goes to Johannaesburg to study and Frikkie enters the army. Frikkie wants eberything to be the same and Tengo wants change. I won't tell the rest. All in all, it is a riveting book about the social prejudices of South Africa.
Rating: Summary: A story about two boys trying to stay friends Review: This was an excellent book, very good. I see lots of other people from Kingston enjoyed this book as much as me. I found out about this site from my freind. The story was about a boy named Tengo and a boy named Frekkie. Tengo grew up on a farm where he liked to work and play, but he always wanted to get an education. On the other hand Frekkie was a white boy who went to school and had an education but he rather be on a farm. Every summer Frekkie would come to see Tengo on the farm until one year Tengo wasn't there, he found out that he left to Johannesburg, Frekkie was upset and sad. The schools in Johannesburg were all closed from protesting and demonstrations, so Tengo was tempted to go back to the farm, where the Oubas told him to stay, "where it was safe". At the end of the novel, the two long lost friends re-united and were mad at eachother for a while, but soon worked it out. This was one of the best books I've ever read. I defenetly give this book 5 stars. <Note to Author> If you ever get this message, I would like to know if you have any other books that are just as well written.

Rating: Summary: note to the Publisher Review: Dear Publisher of (waiting for the rain) I liked your book because of when Joseph said that the laws are different and he wants them the same, and my other favorite part was when Tengo said to Frikkie he won't get the farm, only the people that worked hard will get it. And we don't know who got the farm because you didn't tell us. So if I see anyone looking at your book I will recomend it. Next time I get a chance to read your book I will. Jason
