Rating: Summary: Very Good When Read More Than Once Review: I will tell you the truth. I did not like the book at first. I was assigned it for a summer reading course in preparation for the 8th grade. But two years later i have actually sat down in my spare time to really read the book. I thouroghly enjoyed it this time. So give this book a chance. You may not put it down.
Rating: Summary: A VERY excellent book Review: I liked this book very much. It was very sad and romantic at the same time. I am also Cambodian but I did not know of the culture (because I was born in America) until I read this book. Anyway, I liked this book very much!
Rating: Summary: A suspensful must-read romance novel Review: Children of the River was a wonderful, romantic novel. I couldn't put it down. In school, a group and i read this book. We got a further understanding of it by engaging in a deep discussion. So i say that this book RULES!!! YA!!
Rating: Summary: Welcome to a new culture! Review: This book is a well-writen romance that really makes you aware of cultural differences. It shows the difficulty in moving into another culture; being torn between old traditions and having a new beginning. Children of the River puts you in the heart and soul of the characters, letting you feel the way they do and experience what they are experiencing. All young readers can identify themselves through this romantic story dealing with cross-cultures.
Rating: Summary: This story is so true to life. Review: I was recommended to read this book by a beautiful Cambodian girl. I read it within 2 days. It showed how American and Camodian cultures are different and how young immigrants here had to struggle between both traditions. I felt the story was well written in that it did not take sides. As a matter of fact, it showed how both cultures/traditions were equally good. For example, arranged marriages do work even though they're not accepted here in the states. If only Jonathan had the chance to read this book he would have understood Sundra's feelings and struggles. I was glad I had read this book, I got to understand this girl that I have eventually fallen in love with. Like Jonathan, I'm that white boy lucky enough to find his love, a beautiful Cambodian girl. Although, I don't think of it that way, I was able to understand where my Terry "was coming from". Cambodian girls don't date.
Rating: Summary: It was a really sympathetic fealling Review: It made me realize how spoiled I am. I really learned alot about how hard the war was for people that lived in cambodia and veitnam. My first reaction when I finished the book was "is there a sequal" I hope that Linda Crew will write about Sundara's future with her family and with Jonathan.
Rating: Summary: A wonderful book! Review: I'm 11 years old, and I really enjoyed this book. At first, when I checked it out, I didn't think it would be something I would enjoy, mostly because of the romatic theme. But I decided to read it anyway, and now I'm very glad I did! It was a great book, and from the start, I loved the book. I did not want to put it down. Sundara has remarkable hope, and I cried at sad parts, and felt like jumping for joy at good parts. I think everyone MUST read this
Rating: Summary: In this book, Sundara must adjust to American csutoms. Review: This is one of my favorite books!!! It is very similar to my life, so I enjoyed this book a lot!!! It is full of emotion and is not a very hard book to read. I definately would recommend this book to anyone in the world!!!
Rating: Summary: I Loved it- anyone who doesn't like it has a big problem!!! Review: I got this book in a bookstore in Virginia when I was visiting. My mother pointed it out to me, and to say the truth, at first I didn't pay much attention to it. Mom said that she would only buy me other books if I got this one. So I got. When I read it, I was intrigued, I loved the characters- I loved everything. I really liked the romance section of the book. Children of the River is now my favorite book.
Rating: Summary: One of the best books we have read. Review: The thing we liked most was how Sundara came from Cambodia and she turned on her family to be with Jonathon, the one she loved. She went against her religion just to be with Jonathon. We would like to read more of Linda Crew's books because we think she is a very good writer. The way she told the story made us belive we were really there. We would most definitly recommend this book to other people because it teaches you about life and religions of a diffrent culture.Don't judge this book by the cover. We didn't want to read it beacause of the title. But in the end we loved it!!
