Rating: Summary: Good Book Review: Children of the River is a good book about Sundara who moves from her home in Cambodia to the United States to escape the war near her home. Her beliefs are very different from the beliefs in America and she finds it very difficult to fit in. Soon she falls in love with a white boy named Jonathon. How can she be true to her heart and remain a "good Cambodian girl" in the eyes of her aunt? To find out you have to read the book!
Rating: Summary: An Insult to Asian Americans Review: I am disturbed by most of the reviews especially by young people. Its supposed to be this wonderul story of a Cambodian girl who finds love and new life in America. But then you read about this wonderful western world and this "strict" Cambodian culture. Of course Sundara is saved and empowered by this wonderful Caucasian prince in shining armor. How typical: an asian saved by the "american hero" aka Joy Luck Club. Cambodian families "strict and mean"? Apparently Crew felt it more appealing that Sundara relate to a Caucasian family which by accounts of the book her own family seems to love her very much. It disturbes me that teachers are use this book. If they use it then they should teach students what Asian families are "really" like and this overuse of the "White Savior" in tv and books. If you say "how wonderful" this book is then do research on the Khmer Rouge and how Cambodian, Hmong, refugees suffer even in the U.S because of a society that forces them to assimilate and forget who they are in contrast to how the book talks about their liberation.
Rating: Summary: GREAT BOOK! Review: This book was GREAT! I am 13 years old and read it last year. A teacher recomended I read her copy of it. So I did. It was wonderful! I could read it again and again! I think if you want a great book you should get Children Of The River. You'll love it!
Rating: Summary: You need to read it! Review: This is a great and inspirational book! It tells the story of Sundara, a Cambodian girl who has to leave her parents and all her closest friends behind to move to America with her aunt and uncle. She falls in love with an American boy, but Cambodian rules state that a girl never dates until her marriage is arranged. The author manages to capture the true feelings, and it makes you feel like you're really there! Once I started, I could not put it down!
Rating: Summary: Children Of The River Review: I like Children of the River because it shows self-respect. Childern of the River is really a thrill. I like it because you get to learn alot of new things, things about a different country.I also like it because it is something I can enjoy and read all day. Reading a book like that seems like to me that I am moving up a level every time I read a book like that. Thats why I think Children of the River is a very good book.
Rating: Summary: The Children of the River Review: I loved this book because it was very blunt, and I could put myself in Sundra's shoes, in a way.I see this book as a romance novel for teens.I learned about another culture as well as enjoyed what I was reading.I also think the book could have been more orderly. The charaters seem so real as though I could picture everything in my mind, like a soap opera. The book kepted me locked in,I read for hours.I think all teens and adults should read it.The Children of the River is at the top of my list.
Rating: Summary: Children of the River Review: I think that this is a great book. Many people can relate to this story because they have to face these same decisions everyday. I recommend this book to people of all ages who want to read a great book that they can enjoy.
Rating: Summary: Flawed with stereotypes Review: I know I am in the minority but I along with many other teachers do not approve of this book despite the many rave reviews. "Children of the River" promotes the notion that Cambodian culture is oppresive where the main character Sundara states throughout the book of her need to liberalize herself from Cambodian "strictness". The book also makes the notion that the term "American" only refers to Caucasians. I am not of Cambodian background but I myself and many of my other colleages plead that you look at this book critcally and decide if this is how you want people to learn about the Cambodian experience.
Rating: Summary: The best!!! Review: I loved this book! I read for two straight hours because I wanted to get to the end and see what happened so bad! I loved the budding romance between Sundra, and Jonathan! It was great at the end, but I won't spoil it for you! This book is definetly one of my very favorites!:-)
Rating: Summary: Very Good, but one Complaint Review: I loved this book so much, next to Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech, and the sequel to it, Chasing Redbird, Children of the River was my favorite book. I had to read it for school and usually I hate to be forced to read. I hate having a deadline, but I just could not put this book Down!!! I got burried so deep into it, I felt like I was there! I felt for the characters. The only complaint I had was that I wish that the author had given me a better ending! She left me hanging! I wanted to know more about what happened to her parents and sisters and brothers! I was left unfufilled and curious, and I was disappointed. In all other aspects though, I loved it!!!
