Summary: THE BOOK THAT PUTS YOU TO SLEEP
Review: I will always remember this book as one that put me to sleep quickly. All they ever do is sit around in "the dry". The mother goes through amazing mood swings too. One minute she is tired, the next angry, and the next sad. And what grandmother and mother in their right mind let a 14 year old girl drive a car around the desert?! The book has no ending either and is extremely anti-climactic. I hated this book and everyone that i know also despised it. I strongly recommend that no one who wants to read something half way engaging read this book!!!!!!!!!!!!

Summary: Sweeping Up Relationships
Review: I, too, was introduced to this book because it was a requirement for a college level children's literature class. I am a middle-aged person going through the career change of becoming an elementary teacher. I thought the book was wonderful. The character "Ola" was thoroughly delightful. The imagery throughout the book is very strong. This was a powerful novel about all types of relationships, family and friends, and their intermingling. At first I was annoyed at not knowing what had happened to the mother, but was later impressed with the way the author brought everything together. This book made me laugh and cry. I would recommend it to everyone.

Summary: TONING THE SWEEP FELL FLAT ON ITS FACE!!!!!
Review: If you have bought this book...consider yourself deceived. Toning the Sweep has voice, but no action, or plot. 14 year old Emmie and her mother Diane come to the desert to visit Ola. They discover that Ola has some sort of cancer. Emmie wants to tape Ola's life and friends on a camera. That's the weak and so dramatic(just kidding, actually it has no dramatic parts)plot.

Summary: A boring book
Review: If you like staying home and retaping your glasses and watching old Star Trek episodes then you will like this book.

The book Toning the Sweep was not a book I like. It was short and not exciting to me. There was not anything but my teacher to keep me reading it. Nothing happened to pull me in and be into it. I did not like the way it was written at all. It was short and I did not to know what was happening half the time because it would jump all over the place. So I did not like it.

Summary: Toning the Sweep
Review: In my opinion Toning the Sweep was a good book. I think that Angela Johnson did a good job on this book the only thing that I really didn't like was how Ola's Husband died. The main Character's in the book is a young girl named Emily, and her mother Diane. The supporting Character would be Ola who is her grandmother. Throughout the book you can tell that Diane is jealous of the relationship that Emily and Ola have because she didn't and never had a chance to have a special bond with Ola. Emily's Grandfather dies in the beginning of the book but they don't tell you why until about the middle to the end of the book, after the funeral Emily and her mother move to California. In the first couple of chapters Emily and Diane Find out hat Ola has cancer then Emily and her mother then move to Cleveland to take care of her grandmother. Then at the end of the book Emily and Diane move to Ohio so they can spend the remaining time with Ola before she passes away.
I personally liked this book and I would recommend this book to someone that really gets along with his or her family and that liked to read family value books.

Summary: Toning the sweep is a decent book
Review: In my personal opinion, 'Toning the Sweep' is, all in all, a pretty good book. The way Angela Johnson describes the desert, and how the main characters react to it, is pretty good. The way she describes the relationships between Emily, Ola, and Diane is great. The connections between objects and people is good , like the refferal between the Buick and the grandfather, and the scarves with Ola. You also see how much the main character, Emily, cares for her grandmother. She shows it by the making of the idea of all of her friends. However, this lets you see the nature of the people in the tapes, too, which helps to build Emily's character. As for Ola, you see that she is not a vain person, but does have her vanity , proving she is human in personality, just like Diane, who is the only main character who doesn't like the desert. All in all, Angela Johnson did a fine job in writing this book.

Summary: A@b.com's Review
Review: In the novel Toning The Sweep, Emily, who is the main character, is telling her story about how she and her mother, Mama, are going out to California. They are going out there to pick up Emily's grandmother, Ola, who has cancer. Ola is slowly dying. She moved out to California after her husband was killed. Ola has many friends in California but she had to leave them because she is going back to Cleveland, where Mama and Emily are going to take care of her. The book get the name toning the sweep came from a local custom that occurs when someone dies. They hit a plow so that it makes a loud tone to let everyone know that someone had died. Emily learns this as she get to know her grandmother more and more. The book shows how three generations can come together and share what has happened and what they think will happen. Although I did not like the book that much, I thought that it was good in telling everything that can be learned by talking to different generations.

Summary: this is a great book
Review: In this story a young girl named emily learns about her family. At the beginning of the book emily is on her way to help her Grandmother Ola move from the coastal desert of California to her mother's house in Alb. because her grandfather passed away. The read learns that there is some bad blood between Ola and emily's mom. Later in the blook the read will learn that Ola has cancer and that's one reason why Ola is moving in with Emily's family. Near the end of the book Ola and Emily's mom settle the bad blood between them.

I liked the this book, because it showed me how the bond between mother and daughter is. It also showed me that Parents have such a major role in their childerns lives.
