Summary: Magical! A YA book to share with your teen!
Review: A delightful book for a teen who wants to read something that is part fantasy and part reality. It's the story of Daniel who, after his parents die, goes to live with his grandfather on the remote island of Coquille. Daniel is a loner who encounters a mermaid one evening. She delivers a key to him by way of a "messenger" otter, and Daniel uses the key his entire life to perform wonderous deeds. His life becomes one of love, adventure, and a magical ability to help animals and people in distress.

I enjoyed this book throughly, and recommend it to parents who may want to take time to share a YA book with their young adult.

Summary: Magical !!
Review: Daniel is a very lonely and isolated child. He lives with his grandfather near the sea.His parents have died and he doesn't have a friend. He walks along the shore hoping to find small things to take home.Daniel stumbles upon a mermaid's comb and couldn't believe his eyes.If I was in his place,I might have fainted if I saw a mermaid appearing in front of my eyes. After a few days,an otter gives him a shell which contains an old key.Bewildered,Daniel puts it around his neck.He finds that the key would vibrate if it senses a sick or hurt animal or lost people is near. What a wonderful, magical key!I wish I could posses it.Then,I could help sick people too. What actually can the key open? Read this book to find out.

Summary: The Islander is a treasure.
Review: Have you ever just picked up a book and known you would connect with it. The Islander is that type of book. Daniel is an extrememly likeable character. His blending of vunerablity, and persistance create a character not to be forgotten easily. The mermaid, caring for hurt creatures and an understanding grandfather make this a story to enjoy again, and again. Bravo!

Summary: The Islander by Cynthia Rylant
Review: I am a first grade teacher. I read this book myself because I love Cynthia Rylant. Well, I could not put the book down! I brought the book to school and began reading it to my first graders. They were entranced! I only read one chapter a day, but they wanted to finish it that day! They even wanted to miss their physical education class to stay in the room and listen to the book! I would recommend it to anyone!

Summary: "The Islander" is a good read-aloud
Review: I am a teacher and I read this book out loud to my students, after first reading it myself, last November. All of my students loved it and patiently waited every day for the next chapter or two. We don't live near an ocean, but it was not hard to imagine the sights and sounds, since they were so vividly described in the book. This is not the best book of 1998, but it definitely deserves some recognition. It was a good read and was interesting.

Summary: Lovely and mystical
Review: I am enamoured with most everything Rylant writes and will buy her books just because she wrote them. This story reads like a prose poem -- her language is spare and beautiful. Mysteries abound and heart wrenching surprises arrive in small phrases without pretense. The imagery and characters are unforgettable. Daniel has such a feminine side, shielded from the media saturated mainland. His loneliness and sense of "different-ness" will resonate with everyone.
